Life update (for those who don't go into the bragging thread- this is a mini-brag thread)

Pretty amazing! And very deserving!

This isnt a mini-brag-- it deserves a big brag!! Post it in the other thread, if you haven’t already.Congrats!

Well I just got into the second program: History and women’s studies. Now I have decisions to make. Of course I’m ecstatic but now slightly terrified.

FANTASTIC!!! Congrats!!!

Congrats again Romani!
Do have conversations with your mentor faculty in each program; are they tenured? find out their aspirations/sabbatical soon?
Back in the day my DH never completed his master’s thesis because the researcher he accepted the program for left before DH’s project got off the ground.

Just saw this. You deserve to be SO proud of yourself - and 5 years at Michigan, fully funded! WOW- I’d be ecstatic too!!!

I just got the news from my boss/POI. I haven’t received official official word yet so I’m not sure how everything works with advisors and whatnot in history and ws.

I’m hoping I can have the same advisor regardless of which program I choose. She is tenured and not going anywhere lol.

So both programs are at the same university? Would funding be equivalent-- or do you have to wait to learn about that?

Congratulations, romani!! What wonderful news! Almost everyone I know who has gone through a Ph.D. program considers those years among the best of their lives.

@calmom I think funding is going to be almost identical. I should hear about the 2nd program’s funding in a few days. Yes, it is the same uni.

I also got a job offer for the summer to develop a course. I really am overwhelmed right now. Happy, but very overwhelmed.

Thank you again everyone!

Well not that the initial excitement has died down, I am really starting to freak out about my decision.
It doesn’t help that there are people I love and respect in both departments who all have glowing things to say

@romangypsyeyes You just have to do a lot of soul-searching at this ‘fork in your journey’. Weighing out what you will be learning, how it relates to your aspirations. Not something to be taken lightly. Just be calm and sure (or as sure as one can be). How much time do you have to decide?

I have until April 15 so definitely a bit.

The recruitment days are back to back (one is March 12-15 the other is 15-17). I’m still waiting on funding from History/WS.

If anyone is still following and curious, I think I am heavily leaning towards History & WS.
Now all of the professors and students know that I was accepted to both and, except for my main advisor, they are all pushing me towards History & WS. I think they make good arguments.

No bad choices, congrats on either.

Ha wrong thread

I have decided on American Culture. I will be specializing in gender, sexuality, technology, and society. For the ethnic component of the degree, I will likely be exploring the evolution of “whiteness” in America (focusing on the decision to bring certain ethnicities into the fold while excluding others), both in historic (Jews, Irish, Poles, Italians, etc) and contemporary times (Arabs, north Africans, etc).

Thank you everyone for your support. You’re all wonderful

Congrats Romani! Sounds very interesting

Great choice, romani.

Hope you have full academic support Romani and they understand and wish you well. Good things to come with the wedding and continued education/career. Hope the wedding plans are coming together and you have a wonderful wedding.
