Likely Letter

cavalier302, would you consider me below average compared to last year’s recipients of likely letters?

bgrill, don’t worry about it honestly. the sample that cav, or 99% of other people on this website have to deal with is SO small, that they can’t give you anywhere near an accurate answer. Say 20 people on this website get likely letters, im sure they send over 1000. 2% isn’t a big enough sample - especially when tons of people on this site are superstars

No, bgrill, you’re more along the lines of who I’d expect to see getting a likely letter. Of course the samples seen on this site aren’t entirely reliable, but from the anecdotal evidence I’ve seen, it would seem that in the past only “top” applicants got them. In fact, on the old CC message boards, there was a thread about what the likely letters meant, and the parents of one of the applicants (who happened to be a legacy) called the admissions office and was told that the letter recipients were in consideration for Echols Scholar status.

hey…I just got my likely from UVa…I had a feeling that it meant that I’d could be in the running for Echols…crosses fingers

Still waiting and hoping for a likely in New York…Anybody know if admission for engineering more or less selective than for A & S? D has great stats here, all she needs now is a little luck!

I think the E-school has a higher acceptance rate, but less people apply and they generally have better numbers than A&Sers. If your daughter falls in line with those stats for an OOS student then she has a pretty good shot at making it.

After reading previous years’ posts, some kids got an e-mail on March 15th notifying them about the Echols, and others got their letters with the admissions package later in April. I have no idea what is going to happen this year. Anyone who gets Echols this year: please be sure to tell everyone how and when it happened. Thanks!

cavalier: or maybe they are looking for a good mix of candidates, with good stats or good extracurriculars/essays?

fjchowdhury, Echols Scholar are applicants who have both great stats and great soft factors. Believe me, UVA gets enough applicants that they can pick and choose. There certainly are Echols Scholars who didn’t get 1500’s or anywhere near there, but they all stood out significantly in just about every area in high school.

I think they probably wouldn’t send likelies to someone that doesn’t stand out all around anyways. The letter says your application was extremely strong, which to me means all around.

does anyone know why there have been 2 rounds of these? do the admissions look at applications in any particular order? or do they just send out one round after looking at one group and another after looking more applications?

I have no idea why I recieved the letter, but I think UVA really showed that they don’t just focus on the SAT scores or other numbers.

I recieved the letter yesterday, but it was dated Feb 15.
I think in my case, the reason for delay is because I’m living in Japan.

I also live in Japan and received the letter yesterday, marked February 15th!! Wheeee… am very surprised as my SAT scores aren’t exactly wonderful…

mine was dates march 3…perhaps they send them out as they sort through apps?

If you don’t mind…what a/b your guys class rankings/percentiles?

1 of 75, and you guys are right, cos ma SATS were not super-just under 2000. So i assume they are looking for a mix of candidates. Mine was dated march 3.

i got mine later in February…congrats to all the people that did and if you’re waiting my fingers are crossed for you <333
I was 1 of 200 with not great SATS Writing 740 Reading 710 Math (I HATE MATH) 620 but I managed to put a lot of effort into the different essays and they were from a different angle than I think most people would have done…but then again that’s vague. if you need any more info morningtkstars48 is my aim. mine was dated feb 14th

morningstar: are you in state or OOS? My d is still waiting…

OOS Florida…good luck to her

My class rank is 1/14, but my school doesn’t rank officially,(and my class is so small there are no values to the ranking…) so it’s not on the report card.

Good luck!!

anyone deferred ED and GET A LIKELY LETTER? what does that mean…
