Lilly Pulitzer Target store fiasco

I did see a photo on FB or somewhere of the merch.
I agree with BB, if it wasn’t for CC, I wouldn’t know what Lily Pulitzer was, and I don’t think my kids know either.
I don’t shop at Target, so I couldn’t guess at the local inventory.
It sounds like something to get people into their stores.
I dislike that sort of manipulative marketing so I stay away.

@emeraldkity4 it really isnt manipulative marketing. LP is very expensive, and has a huge following. Target was trying to do something nice, when it teamed up with the designer to offer some affordable items… The problem is Target should have limit the quantity you could purchase. I cant stress it enough. Most of the shoppers were resellers on Amazon and Ebay.

Agree. Target could have done a better job at regulating store traffic. Many stores limit the amounts of merch a shopper can buy in one trip. Outlet stores do it all the time, and some limit the number of customers that can enter the store at a given time.

Spatter enough spilt spaghetti sauce and Kool-Aid on your dress or blouse and you can get a Lilly Pulitzer design for free.

I really can’t figure this out from a marketing perspective.

  1. What's the upside for Lilly? I read that loyals fans were upset that her stuff would be available to the masses at cheaper price points. I mean, some if the LP appeal (not to me!) is how $$ it is.
  2. Target had to know the stuff would fly out the door immediately, aggravating their customers. What's the upside for them?

All in all it puzzles me, from a merchandising perspective.

ridiculous. Hope it backfires and no one buys the ebay stuff http://www.styleite.com/news/people-are-already-selling-the-lilly-pulitzer-target-collab-on-ebay-for-truly-insane-prices/

My personal view is that Lily will be the loser here as I think partnering with Target was bad from a PR perspective. Lily is very popular with high schoolers and even some college girls in parts of the country. But it is on the higher end for summer/resort wear for that age group. Your typical Lily summer strapless dress runs about $200-$250. So it has a certain cachet that is lost when you associate their brand with Target.

My own D kind of grew out of Lily half way through high school and looks for clothing that has a more urban or sophisticated preppy style. Although she still loves the Lily summer shorts. I own a few of their beach shifts which I have to admit are very good quality - I have had them for many years.

If I wanted a duscounted Lilly dress, I would first check 6pm or RueLaLa (or the like). Hope that ebay Lilly stuff will turn into beanie baby story soon.

Lily is the go to southern sorority wear as well. And I think their grannies. I thought it was a bad idea from the get go for the full price retailers to suddenly have to compete with Target. Even if the quality isn’t quite the same and you can’t get the same prints…still.

Maybe trying to introduce it to the masses at Target would inspire them to shop the boutiques? Does that ever work from a marketing perspective?

Had to look up the brand. Pretty.

DIL arrived around 8am to a line halfway around the building. ALL was gone in the first 15 minutes. She had a sungat snatched out from under her hand and only came home with a little dress for my granddaughter because someone took pity on her and let her have one thing out of their 2 overflowing carts. She came home so upset, not because she didn’t get what she wanted, but because of the appalling behavior of the other shoppers. This was in SC.

Like musicamusica, I had never heard of LP and had to look it up. I happened to be at Target just after it opened yesterday for unrelated items. and didn’t notice any unusual activity - no lines or crowds of any kind. I asked a few people I work with who are more fashion conscious than I am and I guess LP just isn’t big here in S. Calif.

I must have big elbows. Yesterday at my Target I bought Lilly Pulitzer: 3 dresses, 2 scarfs, a romper, 2 pairs shorts, sandals, 2 purses, 2 head bands, a flask. Online I bought some sandals too.

I was in Burbank, CA (so cal) this weekend and my mom and I were at Target in the morning to pick up some sunscreen for the day. There were maybe 10-15 women loading up their carts in the various sections where the items were being sold. It was pretty picked through by 8:30.

I’m surprised that they didn’t limit purchase quantities.

I think it’s interesting how different regions have never heard of Lilly Pulitzer. There are retail stores and it was a very big kind of wealthy-Palm-Beach-matron look. Then it transmogrified into southern sorority girl and the profile went a lot younger, but in that if-you-weren’t-so-young-it-would-look-matronly kind of look!

Didn’t anyone read the Preppy Handbook?? LOL.

We failed to get anything online, but my mother arrived at 7:30 and found several things her daughters and granddaughter wanted. Hope they fit!

I understand that Target wants to build its brand by creating some frenzy about the line, but I really disagree with the choice to permit individuals to clean out the store for markup purposes. Concert promoters generally don’t allow you to buy 100 tickets for just this reason. Maybe Target feels it’s a win-win for the brand to convey both affordability and cachet? I don’t know.

I couldn’t get my hands on any Missoni, but I have a couple of Isaac Mizrahi for Target pieces that are fantastic and have held up for several seasons.

Just out of curiosity, would you know Jack Rogers sandals?

I am still just getting familiar with vineyard vines !

That’s not classic preppy though - it only started sometime around 2000!
