Lilly Pulitzer Target store fiasco

Well, I think I had villager stuff as a kid, but as an adult no Lilly Pulitzer (not my style) and only a cosmetic case and recent carry on soft bag from Vera Bradley. Preppy is not me.

Oh wait-- I had papagallo shoes at one point in time. And sperry topsiders.

I’ve never heard of Jack Rogers sandals. Me too on the Vineyard Vines thing. (S wouldn’t be caught dead in their stuff.)

Since I grew up in Preppy Handbook ground zero  I was well acquainted with Lilly Pulitzer as a kid. But my mother never wore it: not her style.

Mission accomplished: I now have target ads on my iPhone!

Who in tarnation is Lily Pulitizer? Never heard of her. Good thing I changed my mind about going to Target for some home supplies. I would have been mighty aggravated to find myself waiting an hour in line watching women fight over clothing.

It *is *manipulative, just like " door busters" for Black Friday.
It’s meant to get shoppers in the store.
I’m sure they could have ordered more or limited quantities of popular items.
Knowing that resellers, would be selling them in the parking lot or on eBay just creates " buzz", apparently, which is what both Target & their designers are hoping for.

The northwest hasn’t been a bastion of preppy attire, so I’m not surprised this particular line is not well known.

Never heard of vineyard vines or jack rodgers sandals. Take a look at the LP website the stores are concentrated in the east and south—I was curious as to whether or not they even had any stores here. There are only three. And one of them is in San Marino, only a few miles from my house. This sort of “conservative-formal casual wear” look does not play well here. (though I can imagine quite a few San Marino matrons wearing the stuff)

JUST pulled up “vineyard vines”. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY! Those mens pants. WHAT is going on there!!!

Had never heard of LP before this. Looked it up. I don’t get the appeal.

To each their own. Will never, ever understand the obsession with fashion and designers and whatever else goes along with that.

I love Vineyard Vines. It’s very popular here in the South. Good quality and great colors and prints.

I like Lily stuff, but it really doesn’t work for me as either business or casual wear. It just doesn’t fit my lifestyle, but I do find it lovely.

I like fashion and quality. If I get interested in a designer (which I do occasionally) it’s because I like the stuff. I don’t care about the prestige, but I like quality and fun things.

““but in that if-you-weren’t-so-young-it-would-look-matronly kind of look!””

Right. All those shifts and flowers would look very matronly if they weren’t on an 18 year old who weighs 99 lbs.

I remember my college roomie who had recently been transferred to Connecticut called and saying she was so disappointed that her daughter was now begging for Lilly dresses. I had to ask what she meant.

There is a LP store here and a VV. While I think some of their stuff is nice it’s just too pricey for me. Plus I think some people WANT you to know they’re wearing LP. That’s just not me.

oh great. Now those cerulean blue with hot pink whale pants are appearing at the top of my CC page.

I like certain LP things. I have a few really cute (not flower print) sundresses, a great tea mug, a little purse, a bathing suit coverup. A keychain. All on sale or from consignment shops. I’m not sure Target would be my go to store for LP.

My husband loves Vineyard Vines khakis. They are well made, great fabric…and most important…actually fit him well. I’ve never paid full price for a pair. He has maybe eight pairs.

I thought that I knew a lot about fashion. H is a motion picture costumer and my brother formerly a photo editor for a top fashion magazine. Though I’m hardly obsessed with it , we do talk about clothing a lot. Fashion marketing is much more regional than I ever imagined.

I don’t think of Vera Bradley as preppy either. Pierre Deux, yes. Papagallos and Sperry Topsiders, yes.

There is a blog by a woman named Muffy Aldrich which is what I think of when I think preppy. Not all this godforsaken pink-and-green look matchy-matchy look, though. IMO, true preppy is a little bit worn, shabby chic, your grandfather’s navy cashmere sweater worn around your shoulders, your brother’s khakis with frayed hems. True preppy isn’t sparkly / shiny / perfect!

Never heard of LP, Vineyard Vines or Jack Rodgers.

As someone whose grandfather probably never owned a navy cashmere sweater, this sort of East Coast aspirational dress baffles me. The rules seem so arcane and stringent. Oh well… yet another reason enough to stay in the West.

I guess I live in LP territory. My dear late friend lived in her dresses. She was buried in one. My LBD was a Lily. I cannot imagine finding the same quality in Targets. I have no daughters, but their outlet was in Key west.

My D who is headed to college this fall didn’t want anything from the Lilly for Target line; she is a Lilly fan but apparently only the real thing. She just bought Jack Rogers sandals for graduation to go with her all white Lilly dress. My youngest, who is 12, does not discriminate. I took her to Target at 8am and since most of the shoppers were women focused on shopping for themselves, my 12 year old was able to get 2 pair of shorts, a dress and 2 headbands and I appreciated the bargains. I never would have occurred to me to grab extras to re-sell. It is crazy the mentality people are having over this that the cheapened Lilly for Target is worth spending the same amount on ebay that you can buy real, higher quality authentic Lilly for… just crazy.

Wore one of my new LP scarfs to work today and a coworker twice my age asked if I was willing to sell any of my new LP stuff to her! Dang, I should have loaded up yesterday to make a couple of extra bucks.
