Jack Wills is all the rage now for those who like a preppier style, especially for boys. I think they are giving J. Crew a run for their money.
Southern Californian here – former surfer chick, not prepster – but:
I’m familiar with Lilly Pulitzer but I don’t know any teens or adults who wear it. Have seen it at the Newport Beach Neiman Marcus but I think here it is viewed as something retro kitsch – something to wear to a Mad Men party at the Yacht Club (definitely not my scene). Lots of people wear Tory Burch and Trina Turk here though, which are both sort of Palm-Beach-matron-lite (but in a good way). And there are lots of Kate Spade bags and sunglasses worn here, and even some of her clothes, which aspire to a retro- preppy, Palm-Beach-in-the-50s vibe. So there’s definitely some of that aesthetic here.
Oh, and as a card-carrying surfer chick from the 80s (was even on my high school’s surf team), I can unequivocally say that I’ve never worn my Uggs with shorts.
Lol, nottelling. Uggs and shorts is the newer generation thing:

Ha ha! Okay, seeing those pictures reminded me: it’s a Pam Anderson thing, not a surfer thing, and she’s older than I am (though not according to her official bio). On behalf of former surfers everywhere, please don’t confuse us with Pam Anderson.
No, WE were classy. WE wore dolphin shorts and Mexican blanket hoodies. And went barefoot at all times. Even to the SAT (they almost didn’t let me in).
Alaska?
My daughter has a pair of not inexpensive Jack Rogers knockoffs. She’s had them for 5 years maybe. Here in the PNW, sandals can probably last for a decade or more.
If I was going to open a franchise Lilly Pulitzer store…I wouldn’t put one in Alaska. I’d put Lilly Pulitzer stores in southern college towns with big state flagship universities… and no Targets anywhere nearby.
SoCal here…Jack Rogers? Nah, gotta be UGGS or Rainbows. My DS went to school in the NE and converted a bunch of his classmates into Rainbow afficianados.
I have bought a few pairs of Rainbows for D, and Uggs. Wonder whether her style is going to change now that she’s working in the Northeast?
@shellz - I owe you a debt of gratitude. I’d never heard of Rainbows. I was told a couple of weeks ago I need to start wearing shoes with more arch support. So I’ve been doing some major shopping, but was DREADING throwing out all the flip flops I wear from April-October. Can you get them in retail stores? Or can you only order them online? My foot tends to run a tiny bit on the narrow side. Will these work?
You can get Rainbows at Nordstom. Year round…even in cold weather climates!
@teriwtt You are welcome!! We always have had good luck with Rainbows, and my husband and daughter tend to have narrower feet. Mine are average/wide (darn foot surgeries!) and we all love them. The repacement guarantee cannot be beat, and the arch support is really quite good. We live near the outlet in SoCal, so pay considerably less due to minor flaws. The beauty of Rainbows is that the longer you wear them, the more molded they become to your foot…you won’t even care that they start to look a little…rugged? We prefer the medium stack sandal as they last a bit longer before getting too thin. I’ve never yet been able to wear a pair out to get my free replacement pair, btw. That’s the way we justify the $. They really do last forever!

But aren’t Rainbows more of a flip flop? I would not classify Rainbows as sandals. At least not the ones I have seen.
Teri, if you are looking for something that is like a true rubber flip flop with more arch support, I have an older version of these Crocs and like to wear them around the yard (sometimes they travel with me as shower shoes):

(I think Consolation owns a pair, too. )
Yes, definitely flip flops…but the gentleman who founded the company calls them Rainbow Sandals. I’ll admit to wearing a new pair with a maxi dress. That makes them sandals, right?
BTW, thick wool socks and Birks are what we, PNW dwellers, are known for!
@BunsenBurner - I actually tried those on at our local shoe store a couple of weeks ago, and they just didn’t fit me well enough… too much gap between the straps and the top of the foot. They had another style that I wanted to try on (more like a flip flop), but they were out of them in my size. I may still look for those online.
Thankfully I have found a couple of other (well, maybe three or four - some Ahnus and Merrells) pairs of sandals that will do, and I had kind of made my mind up that I just wasn’t going to have flip flops in my wardrobe anymore, but these Rainbows might do the trick if they work for a somewhat narrow foot (never quite narrow enough to order a narrow when it’s available, though). I also do have a pair of classic Crocs that I use to work out in the yard.
Wish I’d known about the Rainbows when we were in SoCal last month… might have made a quick trip over to San Clemente for a look.
I actually do like the LP stuff. My daughter introduced me to it. The silk blouses are pretty and they make a washable linen pant in fun prints that is super comfortable.
I never heard of LP, jack Russell etc, in the Midwest. I’ve never purchased a brand just because it’s a brand name. The only thing I own is a pair of Kate Spade cat eyeglasses with a silver bow on one side. I couldn’t care less if it was KS or not. The most expensive sunglasses I own. I love them and get compliments on them all the time…they are unique. I love the Maggie London hexagonal ones Amal Clooney wears with the metal on both sides.
Olukai is a really good flip flop and I think the arch support is much better than Rainbows. The down side is that they are pretty pricey. You can get them at Zappos. Chacos also have great arch support. Most people are familiar with their clunky, strappy style but they make flip flops as well.
