^^ I’m surprised Hopkins hit over their target of 1235 even without adding the 30. I thought they were being conservative in their acceptances in RD because they ended up over enrolling so much last year. Their yield must have been higher than expected.

[Hopkins Insider Wait List Update: Step One](http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/blog/2010/05/wait-list-update-step-one/)

^^ apparently, their yield has been improving.

The Hopkins blog had this interesting tidbit (my bold)

Princeton announces 100 kids to come off the WL…

[U</a>. expects to take roughly 100 students off waitlist to fill demographic gaps - The Daily Princetonian](http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2010/05/14/26171/)

Hi, my name is Emily. How may I help you?
me: Hi Emily , I wanted to know if Umich has statred taking students off the waitlist yet
Emily: Sorry Swati, they have not.
me: do you know if they will be and if yes ,when /
Emily: Everyone will hear by the end of June.
me: i understand but can you tell if they’ll need to go to the waitlist?
Emily: Historically, we’ve only taken a handful off the wait list. This year will probably follow the same pattern.
me: oh, thanks

HurtLocker…oh how wonderful it would be if D was one of the desired “demographic” groups that’s underrepresented! 100 out of 900 is better than nothing!

aveeno,
i had postponed my admission deposit for michigan and i decided today not to go there…so there’s one spot for you :)

SophieGermain,
How were you notified by Brown? email, snail-mail or phone call?

Do they send out rejection letters for WL students… or do we just wait forever?

Had a student get off the WL at Johns Hopkins today! She is beyond thrilled.

MIT
Carnegie Melon

Hey guys, does any of you know if Williams has taken any international off the list?? this waiting is really hard, I’m just positive to see that many great school like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc, are taking people from their list because I’m sure many people who is alreday matriculated in Williams would go to any of the previed mentioned schools if any spot is offered, anyway good luck to everybody who like me, feels that his/her heart is going to come out everytime the phone rings or open the email… :)

someone i know was taken off but admitted to spring term

KingQueenSoldier,

I called the admissions office and asked if they were taking people off the waitlist. The lady I talked to said everyone will know his/her final decision by the end of the month, which, according to the wait-list letter, will be by mail (not electronic).

There is a post on a UW thread: University of Washington admissions has said it will take 150 off its WL this year. No confirmation by anyone offered a spot yet.

I am sure this is obvious to many, but this occurred to me and thought I would share it. There are waves of wait list acceptances:

First wave: schools that under enroll, intentionally, or unintentionally. At the time of the first wave, any school that announces they are not going to their wait lists are probably comfortably or heavily over-enrolled. This all happens in the first week or two after May 1.

Second wave: schools that were “on the edge” but had withdrawals sufficient to cause under-enrollment during the first wave. This typically should start in the middle of May to June.

Third wave: the loosest of all; drips and drabs of adjustments that can continue until AFTER school starts in August/September.

Has anyone seen any evaluations of WL demographics? I have heard some very discouraging characterizations.

@lesilets what is it?

Re #336. Most schools have this down to a science. As soon as Brown, Penn and Dartmouth know how any HYPS are taking off their lists, they can predict closely what number they will lose. Same with different ‘bands’ of competitive school. They even know pretty much what summer melt will be. So for most, the initial wl movement will be the vast majority.

Letter dated May 13, 2010 to student on the waitlist - Haverford - class of 2014 is FULL, not going to waitlist
