I’m not quite sure what all the fuss is over non-prioritized wait lists.
Example: A university has four schools (Liberal Arts, Engineering, Architecture, & Nursing). The regular admissions are offered based on a specific target number in each of the four schools, and a ratio of in state and OOS. When they receive their final batch of responses on May 1, they can not simply go to the person who was at the ‘top of the bubble’ so to speak. If they have 10 spots for OOS students in Architecture, and no in state spots… they will not offer a spot to the in state student however well qualified they may be.

Yes, students change their majors, but at some universities you are initially accepted into a specific school… it would stand to reason their waitlist procedure would be done in a similar fashion. I would think at a LAC where the policy is to declare your major after your second year, this process would be very different.

Of course it is well understood that Engineering is not going to admit someone from A&S. We were (at least I was) referring to a major within a school. They are not going to care if you are going to be a biology or history major. As a matter of fact, Cornell has separate admission for each school.

Here is an update of the list. Please, lets focus on this thread and note what colleges are in play.

Sorry if I misunderstood. Agreed, if you are any part of the Arts and Humanities than I would think the only thing that would separate the pool would be in state and OOS for those universities that keep a ratio. I am certainly glad I do not work in an admissions office this time of year! It can not be an easy job.

Pizzagirl - While I agree with the need for shorter WLs, it’s impractical to push the application season back so far. Many parents simply can’t complete their taxes before January 15, and otherwise can’t get a final FA package.

People are coming off the James Madison University Wait List.

Did she get into some great schools? Absolutely; however, she somehow has been waitlisted at her top five (excluding Stanford from which she was rejected). She knows that God has a plan, and she must accept it; nonetheless, at this point, everything is still very tender. As they say…time heals all wounds!

As hard as this is to watch right now, this is a huge growth experience (hard to write that without sounding smug or preachy) but it truly is. By October, many students are thrilled with their choice and the sting of rejection is a memory but not an important one.

One of the things that all this rejection teaches is compassion. Weird as it sounds, I’m now glad that S1 got turned down by his first dream school. It was humbling. It was a brutal week. Then came the fat envelope from a school that is a million times a better fit and he loves it. Those early rejections (there were several) kept him from being smug. (Blush. Probably kept me from being too snotty too. Ouch).

Now we’re on the wait list fence with S2. I’m probably more antsy than he is. He’s busy with a thousand things and he never was one to be anxious. He is much, much better at taking each day and each hour as it presents.

I am beginning to view this whole child/college application process as a repeat of potty training. We all go through it but somehow it scars the memory of parents more than offspring. Even the kids that go through the wringer this spring move on briskly after a few more weeks (well, some exceptions there, but overall, they head to the next horizon).

I got a letter from Haverford today saying they’d know about waitlists mid-May. The letter seemed to imply that they would be going to waitlist. It is not, I believe, active yet though.

From what I’ve read about Tulane’s acceptances in their on-line newsletter and admissions blog, they are not going to a waitlist, adding only possibly a few athletes. So, should there be folks hoping for waitlist movement at Tulane, its probably not likely. So, am removing TU from this list. If there is any additional info to the contrary, we can relist it
