Literary references in film

lots of good movie /book threads
So why not start another?

Looking for authors ( or artists) as secondary characters in movies-
( or ok movies that are about writers too)

A Knights tale- which I thought was much better than I expected- has Paul Bettany playing Geoffrey Chaucer- and hilarious

Field of Dreams- James Earl Jones as Terence Mann ( purported to be JD Salinger)

ll Postino-has Pablo Neruda played by Phillipe Noriet- a beautiful film about taking risks that was the last project of the main character the postman

A Cradle will Rock- has Ruben Blades as Diego Rivera
A Cradle will Rock was written in 1937 as part of the Federal Theatre Projects

Before Night Falls- Cuban poet & novelist,Reinaldo Arenas played by Javier Bardem.

which reminds me of the Motorcycle Diaries Diarios de motocicleta
by Che Guevara played by Gael Garcia Bernal

Judy Davis – George Sand Impromptu

Also in that movie: Joe Roberts as John Webster.

Herbert Marshall as Somerset Maugham in the 1946 version of The Razor’s Edge - a very worthwhile classic film, if you’re looking for one. Bill Murray did a remake in 1984 that was supposedly disastrous (I never saw it), though I was impressed that it was a novel he felt so passionately about.

Lots of authors in the recent Capote films, of course. I really liked Catherine Keener as Harper Lee and Bob Balaban as William Shawn in Capote (and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was brilliant, of course).

These were leads, not secondary characters, but Meryl Streep as Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) in Out of Africa and Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Woodward and Bernstein in All the President’s Men.

That’s a thought-provoking question! I wonder why I can’t think of any others?

Jane Fonda as Lillian Hellman and Jason Robards as Dashiell Hammett both in “Julia.”

Vincent D’Onofrio as creator of Conan in The Whole Wide World.

Renee Zellwigger as Beatrix Potter in Miss Potter.

Johnny Depp as J.M. Barrie in Neverland.

Paul Scofield as Sir Thomas More in A Man for All Seasons…
