Little splurges

The thread about what we do on the cheap got me to thinking about what we splurge on. I don’t mean the big, extremely expensive, rare splurges, but the more frequent things we treat ourselves to. The first thing that may come to mind is that expensive cup of coffee. In my home, we like fresh flowers. They don’t last long, but we enjoy them. Funny thing, tonight DH didn’t notice that I’d picked up a dozen roses today, and when he returned after dinner from a meeting, he had a dozen roses too. So we have 2 dozen longstem roses. We enjoy the flowers.

I also splurge on massages. Now getting 90 minute massages from a new massage therapist I found when my previous one had surgery and is out indefinitely. So my little splurges are fresh flowers and massages. What are yours?

We like eating out, often at little diners or neighborhood places. We rather dine out more often at modest places than fewer fancier meals.

Great food and drink, for sure. My wife and I go out once a week or two, and may spend $200 or so on a special meal and good beer or cocktails.

Travel: I travel abroad three times a year, as does my wife (two times together, once separately with friends or family).

Will also sometimes splurge on a nicer wine when we are out to eat.

Oh yes, I enjoy travel! Trips that are at least 2 weeks are preferred, so that you don’t feel you spent all your time getting to your destination and back. Even when I have a trip for “work” or medical reasons, I try to add some time for “fun,” and a destination that H and I will enjoy. Sometimes we have to think a bit of where to add to the trip, but we always manage to come up with something that we will both look forward to! I don’t travel abroad much, but maybe we will start doing more of that.

Seeing movies at the expensive theater with the recliner seats.

Good bras that fit properly! Smartwool socks or Darn Tough Socks. Cashmere, although I scout eBay for super deals.

Good food. Good beer. Decent hotels when we travel.

Eyelash extensions, lol. They’re magic.

I second fresh flowers. My husband actually loves them even more than me.
Since we are both busy professionals, paying someone to organize our house/closets every now and then in addition to regular cleaning and lawn service,I consider money well spent.

Good food, good wine and good beer. We also like to travel both abroad and in the U.S.

A bunch of flowers when we shop at Costco or TJ - if the pervious bunch has already wilted. A salad and a glass of wine at the waterfront diner on a Thursday night… A big little splurge is our steak split for two at the hidden gem restaurant every time I pick up Mr. from his trip to the overlords’ lair. (no, he does not charge it to the co).

A few make up and skin care items.

Art…orchids (they last longer than cut flowers)…travel…fancy bras…

Fresh flowers, fancy French soaps, nice hand creams. DH likes to treat himself to nice beers.

Phrasing!

I second Darn Tough socks. Life-changing.

High quality linens and towels, pedicures a couple times a month, Zimmerli or Bresciani dress socks for H, pretty undergarments, fresh flowers and having my car detailed 2 or 3 times a year.

la duree pastries…they just opened here.

For smaller things…not travel or eating out…Gel mani and pedi before vacations, strapless bras (their expensive), hair products and department store makeup

Lunch out with friends every few weeks.

Good bras.

Expensive clothes for the important events in my life.

Anything my adult children – both starving grad students – absolutely need.
