agreed, @MotherOfDragons ! There is a “good buy of the day” thread. This isn’t it. Most cheap, mass produced wine is swill. As for little splurges, I will intermittently treat my car to hi test gas. Its an old car. It probably needs it.
Izze soda, which is just juice with fizz.
postcards, I send them to my kids and my friends just so they get mail
refundable rate for a hotel room, so I don’t have to worry about “what if we have to change the date”…none of our parents/siblings/children have the ability to house us when we visit, so I find I am doing this more and more…
That’s not how it works. The gas ‘fires’ at a certain level. Cars that need 85 octane gas don’t work any better if you put in 92 octane gas. Cars that need 92 octane don’t work as well with 85.
The grapefruit Izze is pretty yummy and an occasional splurge for me, @greenbutton.
Yes, I pretty much always stick with the refundable hotel rooms, just because “life happens,” and I prefer to keep as flexible as possible.
Sorry, my earlier post was meant for “The Good Buy of The Day”
Voss and Evian water.
I like to get fresh roasted coffee from a local coffee place, and I buy Torani Hazelnut syrup, or sometimes Starbucks. I have 2 lattes every morning.
@twoinanddone - My car is supposed to get premium gas. I just don’t treat it to it very often
Beginning to use premium gas actually solved some stall issues D2 was having. I use the medium octane. But somehow, this car uses so little. Nice trade off.
Agree on bras. Unless I catch the annual sale, I don’t want to mention what my favorite brand costs. Fiji water (neck and neck with Evian on price, it seems, but I really love the taste.) Pedicures, and I recently went back to acrylic nails and it makes me ridiculously happy.
My good splurge is the best groceries. I mainly stick to organic, local if possible, prime cuts of meat, responsibly raised (i.e. the $6-7 pasture roaming chicken eggs), etc.
I’m not sure I consider fine groceries to be my splurge since it’s my normal routine. My real secret, guilty pleasure splurge is hitting McDonalds every so often and buying junky Hostess snacks on occasion. Consider it a “cost to my health” splurge.
Hamilton tickets…yikes
I bought a large bag of Trader Joe’s classic potato chips and a tub of onion dip earlier this week. Ate them all myself and apologizing to no one.
@Otterma I’ve done that and had to apologize to my digestive system. Profusely.
Just a note: buying premium gas can help with some car problems because the premium often has extra cleaners, not just higher octane. Generally, the cheaper the gas, the fewer additives, and the additives often remove deposits on parts. DH’s father worked for Exxon his entire working life. If you track your gas mileage by brand, you should be able to see which gas works best for your car. I notice I get about 10% poorer gas mileage with the cheapest brands–which cost about 5% less.
Good quilting tools. Makes it so much easier and safer. Have read too many stories of folks hacking off the ends of their fingers with rotary cutters. Cannot afford to do that while taking three blood thinners!
Artisan-made scarves and/or earrings from places we travel. It’s nice to put them on and be reminded of a wonderful trip.
I buy my lunch almost every workday. Nothing fancy, but “splurgier” than brown-bagging.
“Agree on bras. Unless I catch the annual sale, I don’t want to mention what my favorite brand costs.”
My $150 bra allows me to look million-dollar fabulous in $5 t-shirts and cheap dresses. B-) That is my justification.
Having a bra that fits properly and helps us look great in our clothing is priceless–I’d say that’s a necessity, not a splurge,
I know others may disagree. I do like it when I can find them on sale at Ross, TJMaxx, Nordstrom’s Rack, etc., but it’s very hit & miss.
When you are “well endowed,” it’s really important to buy the right “foundation” so that engineering can keep things where they look best. Even for folks who are less endowed, good undergarments can make a difference. We bought D some nice bras that fit properly and her clothing looks better on her.
Go to barenecessities.com. They have many name brands and every few months they have a sale. I’ve gotten my marie jo bras there (normally $106) for 25% off. If you know what bra works for you, you don’t have to go to the brick-and-mortar stores.
