LMU Early Application class of 2024

My D also received Presidential Scholar e-mail last night as well.

I would be interested to see the grade/tests #s for those who received the Presidential Scholarship. Congrats to you all. Seriously this is a nerve wracking process so take the good news when it comes your way!

PS. I am also interested if receiving this large scholarship means that one is not eligible for other large scholarships. I’ve had my best luck simply calling the school.

It seems that, as is often the case, what admissions tells parents or students who check is not always accurate, or perhaps not the whole story. For instance, @amsunshine said yesterday her D’s admission counselor told her “financial aid awards, including merit awards and need based aid, would be snail mailed to applicants in “early February”. She said after the hard copies are mailed, the portals will be updated.” But then also yesterday, @amsunshine 's D got an email telling her of her merit scholarship - this was not part of the scenario mentioned by the admission counselor! Of course it may still be true that the awards will be snail mailed and then portals updated, but the fact that an email was coming that same day telling the award was not mentioned. I just wish they would send out all the merit awards at once.

@JD7777 My D’s stats are in post #306

Hopefully being awarded the President’s Scholarship doesn’t foreclose others. At that price UC is still $10k less expensive, and CSU $15k.

This is one of those places where your imagination can really get the best you “Why is everyone else getting information but we aren’t?” and “Did we somehow mess up the application?” and “What address did they use? Is that the wrong one?”

@JD7777 right there with you…

Based on the posts here, it seems like probably all the emails for potential Trustees and Presidential’s have gone out. What is left for someone who didn’t attend a Catholic or Jesuit HS? Maybe the Arrupe…? Not sure what that is. We, unfortunately, won’t qualify for much in the way of need-based aid. While apparently somebody somewhere thinks that we’re rich, that still doesn’t mean that we can afford to cough out $67K or whatever annual tuition is for this university. Well, we can’t afford that if we want to retain any of our retirement monies and not leave our son with a huge bill for taking care of his elderly parents! Sigh… He has been eagerly awaiting to hear about merit aid for Loyola, because he really wanted to keep that dream alive. I think I will hold off delivering the bad news…

I attended a Jesuit HS. I was, however, deferred. I am confident that I will receive this scholarship after being accepted. I am pretty sure there is still time to receive scholarships.

@NorCalsoccermom The Arrupe scholarship is still on the table for her. My d received it and she would not have qualified for need based. And it was much more than the Presidential scholarship. So, there is hope!

The only thing I have gleaned from this process (and my own work with high school kids) is that this whole thing is unpredictable. Invites for the really big scholarship went out snail mail (which are at the mercy of the USPS) and are going to arrive in different places at different times. Some got email notification of Presidential Scholarship but it seems like maybe not everyone. Then there is another merit award that can range from 10k to full tuition and it doesn’t sound like anyone got notification of this one.

At another school about 2 week ago this happened very similarly. I even talked to the admissions officer in our area who said “Yep, that all went out already.” Well I called the school directly and left a message and no one called back. So I called the next day and talked to some student who just happened to answer and she looked up our son and said “Yes, your son got this” and we later learned they had a huge email glitch and many kids didn’t get the info. So the message, I wouldn’t break bad news yet because in other very similar cases there was more to the story.

Of course if it the worrying eats you up just call the school and ask very direct questions.

@JD7777 . This isn’t really eating me up. Actually, I see it as a teachable life lesson moment, because I warned my son that he was going to have put the pedal down if he wanted to get merit scholarships to some of the schools that he was interested in, and we also warned him that we couldn’t afford to pay for private or OOS schools unless he got merit scholarships. My son is a very good student, but he’s not a 5.2 Weighted GPA “good,” I’ll tell you that. :-)) Based on the grades people are posting here, it’s obvious that there are more deserving applicants out there, and the school is rightly rewarding all that hard work. It certainly makes me appreciate my own college experience. I was able to attend USC on a sizeable merit scholarship, and this experience has made me appreciate that opportunity all the more!

Thank you for this perspective and for giving us a bit more hope. This has been such a tedious process and I can’t believe I am going to have to do it 3 more times with my younger kids! Lmu was DDs favorite school and I was really holding our hope that she would get a good offer but now I just don’t know. It has been so much harder then she or I anticipated. She likes the idea of a smaller school, but if she doesn’t get a large enough offer we just can’t swing it. It’s also hard when you know you have the NMF thing up in the air as well (she’s a NMSF but we still haven’t hear about finalist status). In all, I appreciate the perspective to calm down and continue to wait and not to panic yet. I feel like this was so much easier when I went to college but I suppose that was a long time ago! Good luck to everyone and hope we hear back soon.

@NorCalsoccermom It’s really bugging me too, I don’t get why they can’t send all the merit notifications at once by email. I just called Admissions and got I think a student. To be honest I am not confident she totally knew what’s what due to some of her answers. She said that all the Presidential award notifications have already gone out by email and the invites for Trustee for Scholars Weekend have gone out as well. But then I asked what about the Arrupe? She said “Arrupe? Uh … I think that’s one you have to interview for so they would have gone out already too.” I said no, you don’t have to interview for those. She was sort of flustered and said oh ok, so those will be in the financial aid and merit letter that goes out in the mail in the next two weeks. Oy vey. I think I’m going to email D’s admissions counselor and see if she give the same answer! Will report back.

Hang in there! There are others in a similar boat for sure (take us for example  )

We had a big disappointment in the fall where a school our student was really interested in gave him a package that was 58k per year and it appeared that similar students (just on paper, stats and measurables) got much more. There isn’t much logic or predictability here. We parents can only hope we cast the right net and that our backups are solid.

My son received his email invitation to Scholars Weekend last Saturday. Have not received the snail mail package yet. A few years ago, my older son received a very generous Arrupe scholarship with the financial package. I believe he got an email notification to check the portal and then the package arrived in the mail later.

My D received an email this afternoon from LMU but it was just telling her about the Future Lions portal - no new info re merit etc. But I did hear back from her admissions counselor who said, after congratulating her on her admission to LMU:

“Merit aid notices will be sent by mail to the student’s home next week. There you will be able to find a summary of the awards available to [D’s name].
I see that we have her FAFSA on file and therefore, any need based eligibility will be included in the notice as well.
Please let me know if you have any further questions, I am happy to be of assistance!”

So … if this is correct, I guess we aren’t hearing anything until at the soonest Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Hang in there, all.

I just about had a heart attack opening Prowl to see “you have no financial aid at this time” and the $72,186 total. Sheesh. Hoping for SOMETHING for my 3.95/4.3 34 ACT kid!

Hopefully “at this time” are the operative words there
