Not what you thought. Have you watched The Killing Field?

Nope, and I think I am much preferring what I thought you meant :)

Good for you. Does the Olympics spirit make you feel younger?

Love the wide shot view of the beach volleyball venue with the beautiful old buildings all around it.

We’re not old, we are, like fine wines-- more complex.

“I read/heard that she talked too much during tennis points were played out and had a laugh that annoyed viewers. That said, all the commentators are overtalking during the events, it seems.”

That can be said about every American tennis commentator. None of them know when to shut up. This is doubly evident when one watches the international feed on Tennis Channel’s coverage of regular ATP events which uses British, Aussie and S. African commentators.

One of my local sports guys is commentating the tennis on Bravo. Have no idea how he got this gig as we are not in a big market. I’m thinking of emailing him and telling him to tell Justin Gimelstob to pleaseeeee stop talking.

I love Tsonga!

“Women control primetime viewing. Women are not interested in sports. Women want a storyline with plots and characters. Pathos plays especially well with women. Therefore, to maximize primetime ratings, the Olympics must be covered as drama, not as an athletic event.”

They don’t know women who like to watch the Olympics. I like my drama and soaps separated from action. Gimme swimming heats without any drama - I will be glued to the TV. Sprinkle in some pathos - I’m outta there.

OMG, my exchange student’s friend made the semis in her favorite event! Go Julia!!!

How exciting,BB! It’s always fun when you have a personal connection. One of the girls on the Canadian soccer team is a friend of a couple of my Ds. They used to play together years ago, and we’ve known her since she was 5. Another, who has had to retire due to injury, is doing the analysis on CTV for soccer. Good luck to Julia!

BB that’s so cool!

re personal connection:

A member of the 2004 US Women’s Olympic Soccer team used to show up occasionally to work with my D’s club team (the team parent had some serious connections). At one practice she brought her gold medal…

Hard to say who was more excited, the kids or the parents. We’ve got a picture of my D holding the gold medal. So cool…

All the announcers seem to have an issue with silence. Maybe they think crowd noise = dead air??

I wonder if it’s an issue of whether women actually prefer sports over drama, or whether TV execs think they do. In entertainment nothing is considered too wild for kids. Once you get into teenage years, there is suppossedly a strict set of things teenagers like. It’s not really true, and I wonder if a similar principle applies here.

I’ve never really considered how much drama is in prime time coverage. I just watch the sports and ignore the commentary, especially if I know about the sport. I’ll sometimes watch the intereviews if I find the athletes interesting, but they tend to be better on the cable stations during daytime coverage.

Yay, Dana! Way to go girl! Congrats - a gold with a WR!

Speaking of commentators (or lack thereof) I was watching a livestream of the USA vs France basketball game on my computer, and I noticed there was NO commentary! It was kind of refreshing, but I actually missed some good commentary since I couldn’t really hear the in-arena announcements.

What a lovely medal ceremony. Such joy on her face!

This goes back a few pages, but

That was a hilarious bit! Calling it a “rant” shows a lot of bias and a complete misinterpretation of what was going on. It could have been a great Saturday Night Live skit.

Julia made the final! Got a decent lane, too. I 'll be rooting for her and our girls!

WR in 100 br is 1:04.45?

2 swim offs tonight?

Another WR in the men’s 100m breaststroke. What a night!

Cameron VanDerBurgh from RSA for the gold.
