Doc Martin and Friday Night Lights
Catastrophe
Loved Friday Night Lights, but I am born-and-raised with Texas high school football. The FNL pilot and some early episodes were filmed at my DS’ high school. He was a freshman football player and saw some of the cast members, costume racks, etc. They used some actual game footage from our high school varsity games in the TV show, which is why the quarterback in the show wore #6 … that’s what our starting QB wore. But yes, it’s actually a show about family and relationships that just happens to have some football games here and there.
Broadchurch
I loved FNL and I am not a big football fan.
We just finished the 3rd season of Turn, historical fiction based on true history of revolutionary era spies. It is so good!
I like the Americans too but it is definitely not cozy.
Death in Paradise
Right now I’m watching Ozark with Jason Bateman and Laura Linney (I love both of them). Not cozy, and it certainly doesn’t make you want to move there, but I think it’s a really good show.
Side note: When I saw the movie version of “Friday Night Lights,” I was amazed at how much it reminded me of my high school. I always stay for the credits (drives my family nuts), and there was a note from the producers thanking my high school and its football coach! When I looked online, I discovered that the makers of the film followed my high school’s team for an entire season. It’s the school Drew Brees graduated from, too.
My sister in law was in love with the old Poldark. Had considered the new one - good suggestion. Alas we’ve seen all the Foyle’s Wars. We both love them. We saw Battlestar Gallactica and even the shortlived sequel show.
I didn’t go to a football high school and although football is big in our high school, my kids were not interested. So even though I know it’s good, the only thing I like about football is that it makes me miss my Dad.
Keep suggesting! Love the ideas.
The reason I recommended “This is Us” is because it’s a show that DH is willing to watch, too! A lot of things I would like to watch, he turns his nose up at them.
Not a drama like these other suggestions but The Great British Baking Show is the coziest show ever. Also Sherlock.
This Is Us was uneven in its first season. Generally terrific but a couple of episodes were so schmaltzy or contrived that I couldn’t watch them. All was redeemed by the Memphis episode though. Looking forward to next season.
I second Death in Paradise
For cozy TV show watching with spouse I recommend FNL, Parenthood. Those are feel good, emotional type coed shows (I’ll throw in One Tree Hill for fun…plus it’s set in Wilmington, NC). Gilmore Girls is wonderful but leans more toward a female audience. Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars are fun, suspenseful youth-oriented shows. Hart of Dixie is light-hearted Southern fun.
The Crown and Downton Abbey are great British shows. Stranger Things is a unique sci-fi show. Good time to watch season 1 as #2 will start on October 27th. Enjoy!!
I agree that The Americans is good. Also recommend Turn: Washington’s Spies.
I thought the 2nd season of The Expanse was better than the 1st.
We are watching This is Us now. Enjoying it, but not one of our top favorites yet.
There’s only 1 season of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, but it’s wonderful!
With so many people recommending mysteries, I’m surprised no one has mentioned Miss Fisher Mysteries - great costumes and delightful. And a sweet romance to boot for an overarching plot to what is basically an episodic show.
I had to stop watching The Americans because I couldn’t stand the violence. There’s not much, but when there is, it’s disturbing.
I just finished binge watching Frasier on Netflix. Although I’d watched the first few seasons when they first aired, I couldn’t remember the plots. That show is wonderful. Other shows on Netflix that I love are Grace and Frankie and The West Wing.
One of my favorite comedies which is nine seasons long is How I Met Your Mother
If you want to stick with the British theme, I would recommend Last Tango in Halifax.
We watched about seven seasons of How I met your mother and then we stopped caring. It was too bad. It was a good show, but went on too long.
You know what I’d really like to watch? Or more accurately rewatch is A Town Like Alice. The version from the 1980s with Bryan Brown. I wonder if dh ever saw it?
Hmm, I wouldn’t call “Pretty Little Liars” cozy…
