Looking for Dishwasher replacement recommendations

Our 8 year old KitchenAid dishwasher (standard size) just stopped working last night (sadly with a full load inside). As the nominated new dishwasher, I have a vested interest in getting a replacement quickly.

I did some browsing last night and found a Bosch and a Miele in our price range that I liked. Any pros or cons to these brands that we should know about before heading to the store? Our local appliance store is only open for online and by appointment shopping right now.

We’ve had enough issues with both GE and Samsung appliances that those are off the list.
Any other brand suggestions would be welcome. Would prefer to keep the cost around $1000.

Bosch is the best dishwasher.

I have a Bosch and it’s 12 years old.

I’ve had two problems with it. It got clogged once and the fix was dishwasher cleaner - which I didn’t even was such a thing. Then a few weeks ago it wasn’t draining. We thought it was the pump, but it turned out to be a wee porcelain chip got caught at top of opening to pump. It only cost $159 to fix - all for labor.

With all I hear about lots of appliances crapping out after 8 years or less, I’m sticking with Bosch. My stove is also Bosch and 12 years old as are my washer and dryer.

My refrigerator is Maytag (also 12 yrs old) and the only thing that broke was the ice maker last year. Wasn’t that expensive to get a new one installed. I think around $300 in total.

We’ve been very happy with Bosch as well. Quite and does a good job.

I don’t have a rec on brand. We always go with the $400 range ones and they’ve lasted fine with no issues. 10 years until we moved and then 11 years until we remodeled the kitchen. I don’t care about features. I want to press one button and it work.

But with our last remodel, we got one that has the utensils holder on the door. I hate that!!! I’ll never get another like that again. It’s a pita.

While appliances use to last, in the last 10-15 years or so, they are not made to last. One of my repairmen said, if you get 8 years out of one, you are lucky! Not sure if this applies to the higher end appliances, but more for the entry and mid range.

When we moved out of our house 3 years ago, all our Kitchen Aid appliances, which were 24 years old, were still in perfect working order. The only repair we had was the oven, and that was due to us putting our outside grill grates in the oven and used the self clean; we blew the oven out! I wish appliances still lasted as long.

@ClassicMom98 We had the $400 one before the KitchenAid and while it chugged along for 12 years, it didn’t clean well and parts of the baskets kept breaking off. We would sometimes have to run loads twice — it was a quirky appliance and had its moods. We didn’t use it for the final 3 years of its life until DH discovered that our water bill was very high and attributed that to our hand washing everything.

So then we got the pricier replacement which did an excellent job of washing and was extremely quiet till its demise yesterday.
I’ll admit I’m torn about paying too much for something we will have to replace in a few years but I am leaning towards the Bosch. For now.
We are on a every five year replacement plan with the refrigerator — DH gets the extended warranty and sure enough as soon as the time is up, the darned thing stops working. ?‍♀️

Would not touch any Bosch dishwashers. An empty dishwasher that can flood your kitchen in the middle of the night because by design (!) no valves to prevent this were built in? No thanks. Miele all the way. Plus I like how clean the flatware comes out from the tray.

I’ve had a number of different dishwashers–Bosch, Miele, Fisher and Paykel, and GE. Hands-down, the Miele is the best. It’s pricey, but worth it. If you don’t need special panels and don’t care about having lots of options, you can probably get a Miele for around $1000. The Miele is really really quiet (I think it ranks first on this dimension), cleans well, and has a silverware tray, which I really like (silverware never has food left on it in a Miele).

We always bought Kenmore before they went away. All lasted forever. Our refrig we brought with us to our current home and worked perfectly the whole time until our remodel. It was over 20 years old. Washer & dryer last 16&13 years. Our second set is also kenmore and doing fine. We have an upright freezer we bought when younger S was born to store extra pumped milk. He’s 19!

The only appliance issue we had was with our kitchenaid oven. It was awful. The heating element exploded and caught fire twice! And two of the burners stopped working all within 11 years. We got mostly whirlpool appliances with the remodel and they’ve been fine, but it’s only been 4 years.

I expect appliances to last 10 years myself. But it does also depend on usage. A friend had 6 kids and a MIL and she homeschooled her kids. 8-9 people home all day will beat up a dishwasher. She said hers only lasted 2 years but she was running it multiple times/day. With a family of 4 we only ran it every 36-48 hours.

About a year ago we replaced our GE profile (which was actually a Bosch which GE sold under their name). It was installed during our kitchen remodel about 12 years before. The new Bosch was one of our only choices (because we have a wooden cabinet panel on it). The new one is wonderful - love the extra cutlery rack on the top.

Got a Bosch about 9 months ago and we love it. Very quiet and well designed. Our Daughter and SIL have one too and no problems whatsoever.

Bosch and Thermador dishwashers are excellent. Both are owned by Bosch.

Whirlpool owns Kitchen Aid and both are excellent dishwashers.

I own a Miele for many many years and they’re excellent too.

I wouldn’t buy GE or Kenmore.

When I read the thread title: “Looking for Dishwasher replacement recommendations”, I wasn’t sure whether this was a search for a new spouse or for a new machine.

Another vote for Bosch. We love ours.

Like my KitchenAid. It’s the only one I liked the racks in. Cleans great.

Our Bosch DW died at 10 years old, almost to the date. I swear it had a timer on it. Loved it while it lasted though. It wouldn’t drain fully and kept stopping at various cycle points. . Like Emilybee, we thought it was the pump, but a repair guy came out 3x & finally determined it was the heater. Or gave up. $450 replacement. Ah, no. Still considering another basic Bosch though after a lot of research. Repair guy said that’s what they typically recommend as well.

Now we’re trying to decide on finish. Both DW and ref’g are black, which look nice in our kitchen. Ref’g is about 12 years old and I love it, but will be the next to die. There are currently VERY few well-rated black refrigerators. Will NOT choose a black stainless. Like the look, but the finish is applied and can scratch, exposing the silver stainless below. Noticed a lot of scratches in Big box showrooms.

As the OP has already mentioned - they are not happy with Samsung. As a PSA…I will reiterate to anyone who will listen - whatever you do stay away from Samsung!!!1. Seriously, just google a bit.

I am on my second Miele. Love it. I think I shortened the life of the first unit by using too much detergent. I now cut the Finish tabs in half and everything still comes out sparkling clean

So, I vote for a Miele. My sister has replaced her unit several times (different brands) and now has a Bosch. They love it.

Before I even opened the thread and read all the posts, my response was Bosch. We had one in our old house when we remodeled the kitchen. Even though we moved 13 years ago, I still miss it. Our current home came with GE appliances. While the dishwasher still works it is not nearly as quiet as the Bosch was.

I bought the Bosch with the 3rd tray for silverware. Very quiet. It doesn’t have the heat cycle like the Kitchen-aid, so plastics need to be dried. But, the Bosch fit into the space better. This works well for once a week wash. If I used it a lot, I’d go for a Miele.
