I am rising junior looking for a university that feel prestigious without the selectivity with a VERY strong political science/international relations and VERY strong Physics and Engineering that is primary research based.
Strong debate team is a plus as well as a large amount of graduates people pursuing graduate studies at top schools in Law and Sciences.

By prestigious feel I mean it having the

Brightest of the brightest professors and students.
Lots of connections.
somewhat powerful and respected societies and frats(not needed)
Something where academics, not parties are the main focus
Internationally respected programs
Very Strong Research programs
Very Politically Active with student political debates…etc.
Someplace where you will be happy to have that degree on the wall
Really Nice Campus

UChicago Thats the first university that first came to mind.

Though I would personally put UChicago up there HYPSM in terms of academic respect, quality of students, and everything else. It does have relatively higher acceptance rate compared to HYPSM. Its academics are unparalled, you will get your a$$ beat. lol)

Perhaps University of Rochester, to a degree? I do not attend, nor do I know anyone who attends, but its kind of the vibe I get from research. Also, perhaps NYU. I guess it really depends on how define “presitigous.”

well you’re really gonna have a tough time looking for prestige without extreme selectivity. You want us to think on the level of Cambridge,Oxford(especially these),Harvard,Princeton,Yale,Columbia, but those all have <10% acceptance rates. Only places I can really think of are Chicago and Berkeley (for instate). Both are really good academically, and Berkeley instate is not nearly as difficult as it is OOS.

Thats quite a statement. Yet for the Ops concern Uchicago and I may even say Hopkins would be good choices. I think Chicago has like a 37% acceptance rate and hopkins is like 27%, which for prestigious universities is fairly high. In my opinion, Chicago has a very self-selective applicant pool in that it has a reputation as a very academically oriented place, where “fun goes to die.” These are both great schools, but if you want prestige on the level (or relatively close)) of HYPS at other schools than you need to look at more selective schools like those or Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, maybe Washu or Duke ect…

I’m not sure if I’m remembering exactly, but I think Chicago said in their admit letter that their overall acceptance rate was 28% this year. They had a 42% jump in EA applications, and also a huge jump in RD applications. It seems like USNWR is really pumping in more applications, and with this year being the first that the school uses the common app, applications should only increase.

SMU, that school is prestigious to the max, and has a 54% acceptance rate. People think its the s*it though because a lot of rich preppy kids go there. Oh and good joke about Chicago not being selective, thats really funny. Chicago is a top 15-20 university for goodness sake. but academics arent really the focus at SMU, so i guess that kinda crosses it out.

according to USNWR states. This past year University of Chicago had a 38% acceptance rate and a yield of 34%. Are you honestly going to stay westsidewof that that is not considered not being selective in comparison to the 10-16% of the Ivies?

it wasn’t 38%. I can guarantee you that. I can’t find the statistic online but I clearly remember it was in the high 20’s. I was accepted- I wouldn’t be lying about this.

SMU is a bit too conservative and non-academic for me.

University of Chicago is iffy. GPAs accepted seem to be high, but I can’t figure out if that is because it is it is so academic or because it is selective.\But overall, I really like it.

For CNI—this is it from 2006…my apologies, if you could find a more recent one please do. I do doubt that it has changed dramatically though, since most of the schools haven’t. Maybe 33%?

NYU… much more “prestigious” than its selectivity might indicate. (save for Stern)

i’d dare to say, for laymen, NYU might strike more “prestigious” tone than UChicago (just because these laymen don’t know about UChicago…)

So if you have half-decent GPA and SAT scores, getting into NYU should be easy. That is, if your stats are good enough to actually see yourself being accepted into any of top 15 schools. that’s why you’re asking this, right? ;)
