Hi! I’m a HSSR in Southern California looking for schools to apply to. I posted on the chances awhile back but am looking specifically for safety schools right now. I am not prioritizing schools in California (I would rather be on the East Coast).
I’m looking to be a Film & TV major preferably, but am also considering Broadcast Journalism.
My unweighted GPA is a 3.84, ACT Composite score 31. I have a lot of extracurriculars and am part of a Broadcast Journalism internship with my school district. I’ll copy my coursework from the chances post below.
Dual Enrollment: Broadcast Journalism 1-2, taking Digital Media Adv. in spring
AP UNITED STATES HISTORY: 4
AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION: 4
AP EUROPEAN HISTORY: 3
(Taking AP English Lit this spring)
Honors Courses: Honors Freshman English, Humanities
Math: Integrated 1-3 through Pre-Calc
Foreign Language: Through 5-6
Advanced Choirs all four years (also listed in Extracurriculars)
As of right now, the only safety school I have listed to apply to is Depaul. I’ve looked at Temple, Drexel, and Loyola University Chicago, but am not applying.
If anyone could give me suggestions of schools (that would be safeties) to look into, that would be amazing! Thank you!
SCAD is a great safety option for film production! They have massive amount of money going into the program and are building the biggest backlot/studios/sound stages of any school SCAD unveils 11-acre backlot, XR stage for film, television students With that resume you’ll likely be considered for the full ride scholarship too. Other than SCAD there aren’t a lot of safety’s when it comes to film production. But my guess is if you have a decent creative portfolio you will likely get into and get scholarships to many. Truth is for the competitive programs you need academics and strong creative. You’ve got the academics so I believe you will get a lot of acceptances. One last thing, while most film schools are privates you’d be surprised with good academics how big the scholarships are. We found they were almost the same at every school applied to.
Emerson, but it’s $$$. A sleeper film program is Fitchburg State University in MA. Really inexpensive. The only thing I would caution you about is that being a state college with a lot of commuters, it clears out on weekends.
UNCSA is a harder admit than DePaul. DePaul didn’t require a portfolio, at least two cycles ago they didn’t. If you’re lucky enough to get an interview at UNCSA it’s still not a done deal. Both are fantastic options.
Have you considered UGA? I wouldn’t say it’s a safety but with those stats it may be a target. Their broadcast journalism program is exemplary (full disclosure, I went to school there).
I think James Madison University would be an east coast match/safety for you.
All academically admitted students to JMU can declare SMAD as their major. Students with a declared SMAD major take a course (SMAD 101) and complete a process for full admission to the major. There are different concentrations in the major including film and broadcast journalism.
