Looking to try some new wines

Suggest your favorites, particularly reds, also list the price±, keep it under 30 bucks per bottle…

Pass on the 2 buck chuck. ;)

We like a nice Malbec. Easily under $30. http://www.wineaccess.com/wine/product/11202181/2009-Achaval-Ferrer-Malbec-Mendoza

Was just going to mention Malbecs. Yummy and very moderately priced.

Wow, we have recently been drinking Malbec also…Alamos seleccion has been a nice find

We’re into Syrah’s at the moment. I like Firefly Ridge in particular.

Also love the Malbecs and have recently been enjoying Rjioha from Spain. We just finished a case of 2007 Parallel 45 and loved it.

I like the Toasted Head, Chardonnay (spelling?) about $14.00/bottle.

If you like sweeter red wines, one of my favorites is a South African Shiraz called Jam Jar. It has a cute gingham top on it. It runs from $10.99 at World Market to $13.99 at Whole foods. It’s semi-sweet, not sickly sweet or dessert wine sweet.

http://www.snooth.com/wine/jam-jar-sweet-shiraz-2010/

I had a glass of wine at a restaurant from a vintner called “Fat Monk”. LOVED IT, but I have not found any in stores, so I just ordered some online. I will let you know! :)

What were you drinking before? Might help in suggesting “new”.

I suggest getting out a map of a wine-producing area and trying to see how many wines you can find from that area. We’ve done that since moving to Oregon (for Oregon wines, surprise!) and find it absolutely fascinating to notice local similarities and differences. Sometimes two wines from the same hillside will taste completely different.

I’ve had fun with wines from the Bonny Doon Vineyard, in particular their Rhone blend, Le Cigare Volante. http://www.bonnydoonvineyard.com/

i gave my husband a subscription to the New York Times Wine Club --every three months we get 6 bottles for $90 – usually three white and three red. So far we have not had a bad wine, and it is a good way to try wines that we normally might not find. A couple really good ones have been a Meadowcroft Zinfandel 2007, Two Angles Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot 2007 and an Australian Fireblock Shiraz 2008.

Send your student to a school in a wine region!

Tamari Malbec: Available at Shoprite Liquors. You and your guests will love it.

^^^^dragon mom. Our older daughter is in school outside of Portland OR. We went down 2 days before pick-up day to visit a few wineries.
Living in the NW we get some that may not be available outside the area. Novelty Hill north slope red is a good choice @ ~$15
Erath and Elk Cove make nice Pinots
Charles Smith wineries have good value wines from Washington
Ruta 22 is a tasty Patagonian Malbec
This time of year I go to the wine store and bring home a variety of rose’ - Spanish, French and Domestic.

Don’t drink much red, but I’ve been drinking Sauvignon Blancs from NZ the last few years. Very reasonably priced (~$6-~$20 for something really good). Several of my friends have now started drinking them too. No particular favorite, but everybody likes Cupcake ($9-$10) and Marlborough makes some really good ones.

Three of the tastiest red blends I’ve found (I can’t go back now, these are too good):

14 Hands Hot to Trot ($8.99)
Our Daily Red ($7.50, also organic)
Menage a Trois ($8.99-$7.50 at Costco)

I won’t even touch a cabernet or malbec anymore after tasting these ones. And more expensive wines don’t taste any better than these do.

There’s a great red that I love which came highly recommended when I needed a bottle of red as a gift.

Anyway, it’s South American and either Chilean or Argentian. It’s a Carmenere by Anakena. Only about $13 a bottle. Highly recommended by our local wine store–great great blend if you like fruity, not too dry but not sweet reds.
