Louis C.K. apologizes--really!

Still horrible what he did, but at least he takes responsibility.

Louis CK has admitted he did what he was accused of.

I find the Louis CK apology much more sincere and genuine than anything the others have come forth with. He really owned up to it, made no excuses. The whole thing still disgusts me, but I do have to give him a tiny bit of credit for that statement

I suspect Louis CK will land on his feet and this will end up giving him new material.

I find this nitpicky but interesting: Feminist Jessica Valenti objects to Louis CK emphasizing that his victims admired him, rather than saying that he was a powerful man who could affect their careers. He should be taking responsibility for what he did and the power he had, not talking about what was in their minds, she says.

And Matthew Yglesias dryly tweets: Weird coincidence that Louis CK was overcome with remorse when a rock-solid story came out in the New York Times but not during any of the earlier waves of reporting.

“find the Louis CK apology much more sincere and genuine than anything the others have come forth with. He really owned up to it, made no excuses. The whole thing still disgusts me, but I do have to give him a tiny bit of credit for that statement.”

I feel the same and that does not mean I excuse anything he did and am not disgusted by it.

Especially when compared to the statements released by Weinstein and Spacey.

I have also heard he personally reached out privately to the all the women before he released his statement. I’m not sure when he did that though.

“Especially when compared to the statements released by Weinstein and Spacey.”

Right. Or Brock Turner’s dad.

C.K.'s apology was appropriate, though not perfect. It may give him a chance at another career. I don’t see any hope for future public life for Weinstein and Spacey (or Cosby), and that is as it should be.

Gotta say, that apology of Louis CK’s comes up short. I think he missed the point about Dave Becky’s power and the women’s careers. Influential people want to protect “Louis CK INC”. If you talk, you’re ruining it. So, he’s allowed to continue with his behavior, and the women are pressured to stay silent.

Vox has a piece today by Anna North about his self-deprecating comedy, and “his masturbation bits taking a disturbing turn”. It’s gross and aggressive, even if he didn’t physically touch them.

While I think it’s good that he’s taken responsibility and validates the accusers, he never actually apologizes.

Think it is great that he admitted it and apologized to the women. Perhaps it makes him feel better. But for me it doesn’t change much as far as how I view him going forward. Who does this sort of thing? I just cannot wrap my brain around a man approaching a woman and doing this. Is it ego? His idea of comedy? I really just don’t get it.

In my mind he is just someone I would not want to engage with-- either professionally or personally.

Oh, I definitely agree that he’s shown himself to be a sexual predator. Nothing can erase that.

The word “sorry” doesn’t actually appear in his statement. I guess I give him some credit for at least owning up.

I didn’t think it even closely resembled an apology. It was crass and arrogant like he is.

I don’t really view him as a sexual predator. I am not really sure what this is. Is this something new that some men are doing? Kind of like “look what I’ve got” and hoping the women are impressed and take it further? Or is this an illness?
Do any of the men on the forum understand this? To me it’s just crazy.

@HarvestMoon1, not even going to touch this subject.

I don’t think it’s new, and I don’t think men think women want to see this. It’s about showing power, forcing women to see what they don’t want to see, and watching them squirm. No different from the flasher on the street or the flasher on the subway. The flasher on the street or the subway knows you don’t want to see him masturbating. Part of his pleasure is watching how uncomfortable you are. And the same is true for these other guys.

Please god, let Bill Burr be free from these scandals…

I have no idea who most of these people are. I had to google this guy.
