Love/Hate relationship with Amazon!

My wife was mentioning at lunch - and has some of the same questions as @Juno16 which I’m sure are on line.

Perhaps Amazon, now that they’re huge, is trying to optimize the business from a profitability standpoint….in essence, fire unprofitable customers.

  1. $35+ order of Prime eligible ships free. Sometimes net price is lower, if you choose other sellers besides Amazon in the pulldown, which may have free or low cost shipping and don’t have $35 min.
  2. Shipping times are highly variable for different merchants. Most shipped by Amazon products still arrive within 2 days without Prime, in my experience. I most recently ordered a pair of shoes late night on August 26th, without Prime membership. It arrived early morning on August 28th.
  3. You can still do free returns, but available return locations may change. In my area, Kohls and Whole Foods still support free returns without packing material. However, my nearest UPS Store changed to requiring that I bring packing material, without Prime.
  4. Subscribe and save is available. I expect wish lists as well. I don’t use Amazon photos.
  5. The Prime shows that have mandatory commercials are still available (former Freevee shows). The Prime shows for which commercials can be disabled are not available. The newest shows are often not available unless rent/buy. For example, S1 of Reacher is available. S3 is not. However, all seasons of many quality not new shows/movies are available for free (supported by commercials), without Prime membership.

Thank you!! That is very helpful!

We have two independently owned (not an Ace franchise) hardware stores on opposite ends of the city that are cult faves. They also stock a lot of cool items that one wouldn’t find at HD or Lowes, including a large selection of high-end cabinet and drawer pulls, yard art sculptures, unique seed packets for gardens, high-end grill brands, etc. These places are mostly frequented by a wealthier customer base. No one is running in just for a lightbulb, batteries or a handful of screws (all of which would be much cheaper at one of the big box stores).

I like Amazon for the convenience. I often find better prices elsewhere. I just did a price comparison on one bath accessories, and especially with coupons that pop up on the site, BB&B (which was overstock) came in the least expensive, by a lot (and free shipping). Wayfair was the next lowest, then Kohls, then Amazon.

Borrowing form the library does support authors and publishers. Libraries are charged more for the books they buy than we (a single consumer) are, and by supporting libraries and borrowing liberally from them - their budgets are increased allowing them to buy more books.

I borrow a lot of books from my library. I also am a “ Friend of the Library “ here.

Finally had a little spare time and got back to Amazon about our issue. We had previously spent about 3 hours on the phone with them with no resolution. Today after about 15 minutes with a customer service rep we got the promised refund.

I thought only one member address is needed currently. If no prime at different addresses, how would a member ship gifts? Or have gift registries?

The Prime member can still send to other addresses.

This doesn’t affect the ability to ship gifts to others or send orders to different addresses. It only ends the option for invitees to place their own orders without a Prime subscription while still enjoying free shipping.

I’m wondering if I can add son’s credit card as a payment option, then order for him using his card to pay instead of my default Amazon card. Of course, then I’ll know everything he buys for himself, which he may or may not want me to know!

Our son and myself share an Amazon account but they are completely separate. Only one person pays for the account

I don’t know what he orders and vice versa. Completely separate except that one has access to the Amazon tv and the other doesn’t.

We’ve had this arrangement since he graduated from college. He no longer had a college account.

I guess they cracked down on Netflix and now this. Although both of us order plenty and the perk is the 2 day shipping

I’m in the same situation with my daughter, except we both have access to Prime streaming (separately - we each have our own login). She’s lived at and had things delivered to many different addresses since undergrad, including still sometimes to our home address. I wonder how they’d even know what the account holder’s main address is - is that somewhere in their profile? Or are they doing away entirely with the option to have an additional adult on the account with a separate login, whether they’re in your “household” or not? I guess I’ll be finding out…

My husband has Amazon account, and he has my credit card as an option to pay, so I’m pretty sure you can do that. Of course our address is the same, but I doubt that matters.

Absolutely. My daughter had her address for shipping and her credit card on my account and used it all the time. I didn’t care what she bought. Also had my mother’s CC on mine to order stuff for her, but we lived at the same address so it was always just shipped to me.

Never an issue. No different than if you send a gift to someone.

I went to look up a purchase I made in July and they have pulled the item from their page as it was probably a fake. They have a 90 day A-to-Z warranty, but you’re supposed to be able to pull up the order and select “problem with order.”But they deleted the item and my order info so that’s not possible. Frustrating

But you can pay with any credit card (I’ve had 2 or 3 of my own on mine at any one time) and you can ship anywhere, so how can it matter? I send gifts all the time. Sending gifts is an option they encourage.

I have a default CC on file, but I can always change it. If I go back I can see that I’ve had both my daughters’ CC on there and my mother’s. I’ve shipped gifts to nieces and nephews and a friend often, in fact so often their addresses are saved in my account. ’

Sharing Prime TV or netflix or things like that is different. Sometimes they make you log in (like on a tablet) once every 30 days from the primary email location. When I (or someone else) tries to log in from a hotel or alternate location, it will send me an email and ask ‘Is this you?’ and when I answer yes it is fine. All my kids have to do is tell me they are logging in and I’ll answer the phone ‘yes, it’s me’.

But in the past, co-users had their own, private purchase history and wishlists not visible to the others sharing the account. Also, some streaming services will only allow you to be logged in on one device at a time. Those are the differences I can think of. It may or may not matter to some.

I just read the article about the new limits (after I posted of course). They may limit the number of payment methods, but that’s not going to work for me. I have a Amazon Prime CC but it only has a $500 limit. If I buy something that costs a lot, I usually use a different card. Sometimes I go online and pay the card immediately.

I don’t see why they care that much. I can still send a gift, so a family member could just log on as me, switch CC, mark that it is a gift, and accomplish the same thing (free shipping). Might be inconvenient for the CC holder, but really, for $139/yr I’m okay with a little inconvenience. They still get the sale of the item so why should they care if they ship it to my house or to my daughter?

Cross your fingers and toes. I am chatting with support. The return window for my fake item was Aug 22 and they say the item doesn’t qualify for A to Z warranty, but they agree the item is probably a fake and that’s why it was pulled from the site and they are trying to get permission from a supervisor to refund my $ (I do have to return it first but that’s only mildly inconvenient).

Eta: she is asking if I still have the original pack packaging. I threw that away eon’s ago so hopefully that’s not an issue. It will fit in an envelope and I can take it to the return spot (UPS).

Update: success! Taking it to UPS tomorrow! It wasn’t very expensive ($21 and change) but still…

It’s dumb they want you to return a fake product. What are they going to do with it? Sheesh. They sometimes let you keep legit items instead of actually returning them, but you have to actually return a fake item?
