My kids are on the go a lot so far when they aren’t sleeping, but for some odd reason this time they are home a lot for meals. Typically it seems they eat out far too much. I love this, don’t get me wrong…but planning and cooking meals has never been my favorite things. It seems I’m at the grocery every 3 days…what about you?
S goes to the grocery store when he is home and he and H both cook. However…I end up doing a lot of clean up. And laundry
I have been on my feet for hours making meals. So, now, I’m putting the crock pot on overnight, so that they’ll have beans for their burritos. They’ll eat burritos and quesadillas all day long. Yes, I am tired of going to the grocery store. I am out of bread (turkey sandwiches) and milk (Apple Jacks).
I’m at the grocery store pretty much every day. I’m not the best at planning, and I always run out of something.
Funmy, hubby just said we needed a break from cooking. And he’s of the mindset that we must have a dinner at the kitchen table every night. I normally plan a menu a week at a time and make the list from that and go grocery shopping. Right now not only do I not feel like cooking I don’t feel like eating either.
Only one kiddo is staying with us, but that is a 50% increase in our little population! It certainly is noticeable. The dishwasher has been working non-stop! I had to go grocery shopping yesterday…
Yes! I’ve noticed that too!
I like cooking but feel like it’s a waste of time to do it for only myself. So most of the time for the past four years and counting (since younger D started college in 2011), I have cooked very little. I enjoy making things for my daughters when they’re home and for the rare social occasions, like Christmas dinner with my family. What I don’t like is all the dirty dishes and the big, although temporary, increase in my grocery bill. I spent $135 the other day; that’s more than a typical one month’s worth of food spending for me.
. . . . And I am constantly cleaning/wiping down the kitchen table and counters! Finding food containers in their rooms!
@conmama, you’ve gotten me started!
I can relate. Daily trips to the grocery (our fridge is about the size of a large dorm fridge), several dishwasher and laundry loads a day and large shoes lying everywhere. Love my kids, but I’ll also be happy to get back to my normal routine. Also, I now remember the headache of trying to plan meals that please everyone.
Yes. But it’s temporary. Ask them to chip in with helping - if they don’t cook, maybe they can run the vacuum or fold the laundry so you have one less thing on your list.
At our house, we do two meals a day most of the time. A big breakfast/brunch - because everyone sleeps in if they can. And another meal later. Snacks on your own. Clean up for everyone - they are happy to do that. You’re not the maid!
I have a pork shoulder in the crock pot right now that I’m doing pork carnitas for today. There will be enough for more than one meal - that helps too!
I’m just sick of eating.
@abasket, great idea on the pork shoulder! I need to hit the grocery store now!
I baked a ham last week for sandwiches and omelets. I also baked extra chicken breasts one night and we shredded them for tacos later. This week, I’m doing a pork shoulder for pulled pork. My kids have also been making lots of grilled cheese and quesadillas.
Beauty of living in NYC - Seamless (restaurant delivery) and Freshdirect (grocery delivery). My food bill is definitely up.
oh yes…the constant dishwasher and cleaning up the kitchen. It has felt nonstop, but I know partly due to the holidays. I’m hoping everything will sort of settle down to more routine, and I’ll use the crockpot. I know once I have it down, they’ll be going back…sob.
order pizza
Me too! It seems the dishwasher is always full with another pile of dishes waiting in the sink. My fridge is loaded but I always need something else to complete a meal- today it is potatoes and broccoli. I have somehow run out of salt. My son is leaving the downstairs toilet seat up- the norm when living with a bunch of guys I guess. Love having them home but will welcome my quiet routines in the new year.
When our kids are here, they help cook…everyday. It’s a pleasure to have them.
In the long past, whenever college-aged DS was home, my wife was in a perpetually busy mode (not only in the kitchen, but she was surely in it a lot. The washer/dryer were also working nonstop - he jogged a lot in college years so there were a lot of clothes to wash. Need to shop new clothes, etc. Oh, just remember this: occasionally the list of those pre-arranged “appointments” which could be done only when he was back home.)
When he left for campus, she was exhausted and really needed to unwind so we either ate take-out or even ate junk quality food (e.g., Ramen noodle) for the next few days before she regained her energy. You can tell who is “the king” in our family. LOL.
We have not had this for quite a many years.
