Low ACT Writing Score

I took the ACT in December with writing. I was unaware of the new format and it completely took me by surprise. However, I followed what my book told me to and wrote what I think was a good essay (probably 6-8 in AP English Language Terms).
My results were:
Math - 36, Science - 34, English - 32, Reading - 30… and a writing of 17!

I do realize that I am a sophomore student with English as a second language. However, I can write good argument essays. I usually get an 8 on teacher-scored AP English Language essays, and even if I have no idea what I’m writing about, I can still muscle out a 7. I know that the format is different between the ACT and AP, but still…

When will the ACT Writing get “fixed”? Or is it even broken in the first place?

Also, I’m planning on an engineering major at Ohio State or MIT. Will it be worth it to try to raise my score?

First of all, those are excellent scores! Especially for a Sophomore.

Secondly, Ohio State (to my knowledge) does put emphasis on scores while considering applicants for merit scholarships. It’s worth raising that score just for those, since MIT (and most other college) admissions are really just impossible to predict.

Okay, thank you. I just bought a new ACT writing book from Amazon.
