Low GPA Asian Male with Ivy+ or bust mentality. PLZ chance me (junior) [DE resident, 3.82 GPA, 1400 SAT, neuroscience or molecular biology]

I am going to apply to CWRU to probally becuase they have a good neurosceince rpgram and my consuler said they have good merit aid. I am probably going to find more schools that have good merit aid and apply to them.

Does it still work the same as EA because that is what I heard it works as?

I am going to get one rec from my math teacher that I will have for 3 years and the other is going to be from my AP Lang teacher that I will have for 2 years

If you get merit aid will your parents pay the balance?

Alright thanks. Ill try to get my SAT/ACT up to try to be more competitive as my sats seem to be the weakest point.

If its close to UD instate you will. They just wont pay 30K+ per year.

I was confused on that myself and did not get time to ask my counselor on that. I know for SCEA that is prevents you from EAing to any other private uni but i did not know about EDing to one and I am not sure if I am going to do Penn ED or Princeton SCEA.

Your SAT could be a perfect 1600 and these schools would still be huge reach schools.

And you can apply test optional to most of them.

You need to understand, there are many many many students with superlative applications who are rejected from these schools every year.

To get merit, you need to be one of the top applicants, since it’s a bribe. You want to apply to schools where your stats are above the average, your SAT is lower than the average. My kids needed merit if they didn’t want to go in state. One of my daughters graduated from UDel honors, she had a 34 ACT, 3.9+ uwgpa, received $17,000 a year in merit (OOS), graduated in 3 years due to 9 AP test scores, is now at BU for graduate school (also gets some merit from them).

That is my main focus for the rest of junior year getting that up. I do not prepare at all when I took it originally.

You are super correct that even with an 1600 there is a toss up if I am going to get in. I am just going to try to get those scores up before anything else right now.

College consuler said that exact same thing. For me atleast there is always grad school to bring it home. Additionally, if I do get rejected it is going to sting, but I think that there is prob a reason behind those and I just need to do better next time.

Huh ?

Then find an inexpensive, on line school.

That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. At every school you mentioned, they have and you are paying for an experience. That would even be if you went to Delaware State.

Many schools will have a good neuro program.

The question again - what do you plan to do with the degree ? Is it pre med, grad school, get a job?

You just said grad school - then find an inexpensive program.

Ps - find the school you want. Penn and Princeton are different. Which fits you ?

Binghamton, Pitt, Va Tech, Michigan State, etc all rate highly across publications I reviewed. For smaller, Rhodes, Brandeis, and Lafayette. All great. All will get you to the same grad school. All realistic - both match and or reasonable reach.

You need a list of reality. Grad schools pick the best GPAs and test scores. You want to be at a place where you are above average, not one of a million brilliant people.

My advice is to try and get the test scores up. Keep in mind that merit is given at schools where you are at the top- as noted above. Personally, I think UDel is a great school.

What are your goals after college? It’s ok not to know- you are still in HS

Thanks.

This thread has def told me to get that score up

It’s not just the scores. Getting all As in your classes and making meaningful contributions to your class discussions matters too, and selecting the most rigorous courses for senior year. You could do all that and still not get in any reaches. Please find more match schools that you like.

pre med or grad school. If I do got to UD I will probably stay in the same lab I am currently and then find opportunities from there.

Alright. I’ll look into more matches. Probably lehigh is #1 on list then .
