Lowes Scholarship

Got the $5000 letter today. Also in MS

No scholarship for us!

got a $1000 letter today, live in NC…letters sent from SPA in TN so they’re def. coming

do they send to a letter to everyone? mamabear1234, did you reveive a letter to tell you NO?

D did not get the scholarship last year (she was a semifinalist). We can’t remember for sure if she was told that she didn’t get it … but we both seem to recall that she got a letter or email about it, telling her how many had competed for a relatively few scholarships. If you search for last year’s Lowe’s thread, I think it’s posted there.

Son did not get: very disappointed and surprised since he had 2400 SAT, 4.74 GPA, Valedictorian, Eagle Scout, and well rounded in terms of participation in sports and extra-curriculars. So I am wondering what it takes to even get $1000?
And mushmouse, they did send a letter saying he was not selected and something about 90,000 applications for only 375 scholarships.

I received my scholarship letter today!

I’m turning it down though, since it’ll only lower my school’s fin. aid. hope it goes to some good use to someone out there!

I got the 1000! Yay, it’ll come in handy considering i got no fin aid :-(

I just got it today too— the $1000 one. I’m from GA by the way.

got it too! $1000

Son got the $1000 award in Saturday’s mail.

Still anxiously waiting in Wisconsin!

So, how many of you young geniuses discovered a cure for cancer? I’ve often wondered what it takes to win an award like the Lowes Scholarship. What do you think set you apart in the competition?

Hopefully, I’ll hear tomorrow!

Nothing set you apart?

Perhaps the essay helped and hurt some people? Also, if you look at the cover page that you should have printed out when you submitted your application, you will notice that in the chart titled “SPA USE ONLY,” they have some abbreviations and numbers. I think that…
AI = academic index
CAI = ???
GEO = store location number
CP = number of college prep classes, with AP classes counting twice as much as honors classes
EX = extracurricular activities, calculated using number of years involved and positions held (don’t know exact formula)
WE = work experience, more specifically how many jobs you’ve held
VS = volunteer service, more specifically the number of hours you’ve volunteered.

I might be wrong about these abbreviations, but I came up with these looking at how they corresponded to what I entered on my application.

Maybe if CCers compared the numbers that they have for these (besides GEO), we might know what set them apart (in addition to the essay).

Good points.

it’s all about the essay, they are very sensitive to needy students

Aw, I didn’t get it.

i didn’t get it either :frowning: i can’t say that i wasn’t a little surprised. I thought i at least had a shot at the $1000
