LSU Admissions for Fall 2024

Thank you, Scottyjane! My daughter has similar stats…her gpa is a 3.2, no APs, extracurriculars, works 30 hrs weekly, heavily involved in philanthropy, and strong essay. Hoping we get news soon. Again, congrats and thank you for responding to my question.

I would love to know how this works as well. When we lived in Texas, there was a 10 point grading scale, so a 90 was an A. When we moved to Louisiana, the grading scale is 7 points, so a 90 is a B here. The points for an A vs. a B can make a significant difference. Do universities take this into consideration? Maybe I just don’t understand how GPAs are calculated…

Has anyone reached out to request additional merit? When would be a good time to do this, and who did you contact? I was accepted on 9/23 and received my merit by email on 12/21 and then by mail. Also, I am curious about the honors program and if all decisions have been announced.

It should be taken into consideration. My understanding is that colleges will review and calculate the GPAs so that they are comparing apples to apples.

It varies so much. In some schools, they use an A-4.0, B-3.0, C-2.0, etc. In some schools, a 93-100 is a 4.0, 90-92 is a 3.7, 87-89 is a 3.3.

If you used any of the above scales, my son would have a 3.7-3.8.

The only way to get a 4.0 at my sons school is to have a straight up 100. If he went to a HS down the street, with his 92 average over core classes, he would have a 4.0 or a 3.8.

His HS gives his 92 a 3.2 which is totally different than 98% of the HS. It’s ridiculous. They say they compare apples to apples, but how does he apply for scholarships that need a 3.5 or better, when the algorithm won’t let him pass the question since his HS gives him a 3.2 with an A average?

I had a 4.0 in college and my overall average was a 93. His HS is 1 point lower and he has a 3.2. Even if they put everybody on an even scale, you can’t tell me that seeing a 3.2 on paper looks as good as seeing a 4.0, even if that’s what he would have down the street.

How does his school guidance counselor advise the kids to handle that? It has to be something the kids at that school encounter every year.

Would love to hear more about your son’s experience coming from MA. We’re from the mid-Atlantic but our son attends a boarding school in New England. Don’t know much about LSU but his college counselor suggested he apply and since it’s similar to some of the other schools on his list. And curious if anyone knows about club sports because his sports (ice hockey, lacrosse) are not NCAA at LSU.

We are from Maine, have family in the Lafayette LA area. My daughter has a really good friend that went to LSU from her HS last year and is having an awesome experience. Our HS usually sends at least 1 kid to LSU per year. Similar comment for U of Alabama.

Also, U Arkansas and Ole Miss are becoming popular at our HS as well.

I believe LSU has a club ice hockey team but they need to travel to Lafayette (an hour away) to practice and play as there is no permanent ice rink in Baton Rouge anymore.
Baton Rouge has a new found love affair with ice hockey though, their new pro team, the Zydeco, has had a super enthusiastic fan base this opening season (they play in the city’s multi purpose arena).

There should also be a Lacrosse team. Search X and Instagram for more info. I believe both clubs have accounts.

How did your S24 like admitted student day??

He loved the visit generally, especially the LSU men’s basketball game on Saturday. The campus did not overly impress him but he made it clear that was just an observation and that it did not mean anything negative. I reminded him that despite it being 72 and sunny, it was the middle of winter and the campus has a lot of beautiful trees which were dormant.

I think his top 4 include SMU, LSU, James Madison and Tennessee (deferred). Baylor would be 5.

Thanks for sharing! So great that you got to go!

My D is OOS. Her bestie that goes to the same HS just received admission yesterday. Both applied test optional. My D has a 3.7. Her friend has a lower GPA and fewer activities, We applied around the same time in October and have not received a decision yet. We have literally heard from every other school accept LSU. So now we are focusing on UMD and U of Alabama because it has been four month with not word accept “you are in line for our review”…But she is still hopeful. She wants to make her decision soon.

WONDERFUL NEWS, CONGRATS!! So happy for your daughter and family. I’m an LSU grad, and it is definitely an amazing school! Welcome to the Tiger family!

Are those in order of his preference? Or is he not sure about which one is his number one?
