I’m interested in volunteering through Madison House this year, possible with the Adopt-A-Grandparent program or at the SPCA. Does anyone have any information on these programs? How many hours per week are expected? What have your volunteer experiences at UVA been like?

I volunteered in Boosters/Cavs in the classrooms for my 5 years at UVA. It was a 1 hr/week commitment. You go to a special 1 or 2 hr orientation for the program you pick, usually in September, and they let you know about those things, and you can also ask them at the big activities fair at fall orientation. I loved doing it and you should definitely get involved in it if you are even remotely thinking you would enjoy it. It is a great break from the college bubble.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Adopt a Grandparent. I’ve had at least 4 friends do it, and three of them were Program Directors. One is actually the upcoming Head Program Director. They all love it though, but I’m not sure about the time commitment. I know that they have to set up a car pool to get to the volunteering site.
