MAML (Massachusetts Association of Mathematics Leagues)

Has anyone here ever heard of this competition?

EDIT: Typos

nobody? (chars)

Yes, I have. It’s a two level mathematics completion. The top hundred from the first round are invited to the second round. The top 20 receive a small amount of prize money and get to put it on their college applications. Here’s the link to the stats:
http://wocomal.yanco.com/statistics/olympiad/index.html

how prestigious is it?

bump chars

Massachusetts is known to be one of the “smart states” that has high test scores and the most highly educated popluation in the US. The gene pool includes all those Harvard and MIT professsors’ kids. It means something to be one of the top math students in the state.

I know that the kids who do well (top 20 or so) also get in to top colleges. I’m talking HYPM. However, they also have other interests and activies and strong academic records.

So would top 20 on MAML junior year be considered a hook?

It will look good on you college resume, but I wouldn’t consider it a hook. If you’re that good in math you should do well on the USAMO which I think is even more impressive. If you’ve taken college level math classes in high school that also looks good to colleges. However, unless you’re really outstanding in math, you’re going to need some other extra curriculars as well.

Then what do you mean exactly by this?

In addtion to being in the top 20 these kids also did sports or excelled in things like chess or in science competitons. However, there are kids who get admitted to top schools mainly on the basis of their math ability. You have to be one of the best in the country or world to do that though.

bump any other opinons?

It cannot be considered a hook. Being the top 20 in a state in ANYTHING cannot be considered a hook at a top college. However, if you make something like the MOSP (USAMO winner or honorable mention), that is a legitimate hook at any college.

top 20 in a state doesn’t guarantee anything. hell top 20 in the nation doesn’t mean anything either…as scorcher999 (usabo finalist) has demostrated unfortunately.

basically, the kids that get top 20 already have amazing stats (top of class, other math competitions, various science competitions).

would top 20 be similar to a good score (8+) on AIME?

I’m thinking so, because it seems as most of the people who made the top 20 also made the USAMO, and there were some who didn’t make the top 20, but made USAMO.

I know several in the top 20 who didn’t make USAMO (one got a score of 6 with a composite of around 180ish)

Either way, being a top 20 in the MAML should still be considered really good and colleges will like it.

So the MAML is not just some insignificant, sad competition. Good, that makes me happy.
