Man tells U of M student to remove hijab or he'd set her on fire in Ann Arbor

I hear stories all the time about my university. 90% of the time either just not true OR it’s done by one person or a handful of people and doesn’t even make the daily school newspaper because it’s such a non-story.

It’s frustrating.

I voted but I cannot protest. I am physically not able to be in those spaces much of the time and with a suppressed immune system, crowds are a nightmare. Instead, I’ve been giving money and I’ve opened my home to anyone who needs a safe space.

But I know dozens of protesters. Not only did every single one of them vote, they also were very involved in get out the vote efforts in the months leading up to the election as well on election day. We’re in a state that tries very much to suppress the vote especially in urban areas, and so far they’ve done a good job of it.

Some know I am a great fan of a well done and peaceful protest. It’s a form of civic empowerment, as is the voter drive…

Back to the topic of the thread. I worry that this sort of thing may become more prevalent, given that some people feel emboldened by the rhetoric of the campaign. Many women in our area wear the hijab. They have done so with few issues to date, but will it stay that way? My D dates a man who has an Arabic name. He already has to deal with the quiet sort of racism that comes with having such a name. He is Christian, but unless he wears a sign or writes that next to his name on paper, no one going to know that. Will there be overt racism by those who feel their prejudices were validated by the outcome of the election? I fully understand that many who voted for the President-elect do not harbor such prejudices. But unfortunately, when the sort of things that were said about groups of people in the campaign are said, then a positive outcome for the candidate associated with those things can fan the flames of bigotry. We must watch for and counter such bigotry.

Couple of more incidents:

Couple of Babson students tossed out of their fraternity and being investigated for driving a truck with pro-Yuge one signs to Wellesley to harass students. In particular, they drove to an African-American interest dorm to continue their harassment and when asked to leave by a student, reportedly spat on her:

Nazi graffiti found in New School Dorm:

Thanks, guys. I googled a bit and found some stuff. Just SMH…

[Post-election spate of hate crimes worse than post-9/11, experts say](Post-election spate of hate crimes worse than post-9/11, experts say)

Portland had a lot of damage and vandalism. LA has seen a lot of graffiti vandalism linked to the protests. Cars stuck in the melees have been smashed. The take over of the freeways and city streets so that other people cannot get to their destinations or fear leaving their homes is very disruptive. Free speech is a wonderful thing. That does not give the mob license to shut down streets that should be open to all.

Just saw an older HS alum friend post about her friend’s mother being called a “terrorist” by a neighbor as she was walking home last night because she’s South Asian.

Worse, she woke up this morning to find all her car windows smashed in and the incidents happened/her home is on the other side of MY neighborhood just a 10 minute walk from where I live.

This is really scary as this neighborhood is an increasingly multi-ethnic neighborhood in which people of different races/ethnic groups usually get along for the most part.

Wow! These are awful and scary incidents. I am relieved that so far HI has not had reports of any of these incidents.

Deplorable, truly.

My brother’s college was just graffitied with “ISIS is calling! Muslims can leave!” and “F*** stupid latino immigrants.” I’m shocked since it’s known as a very liberal, hippie, artsy college, but I guess I’m naive.

My kids colleges were both hit with vandalism marked with a racist symbol. Liberal colleges in a suburb of CA. It would seem that nowhere is exempt from this behavior.

A lot of manipulation and deceitful tactics out there. Let’s not believe everything we see in the news at face value.

It takes only a small number of criminals or terrorists to make a lot of trouble.

What is the composition of the area currently, and how is it changing?

Here’s a partial list of incidents.

And another incident:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2016/11/12/silicon_valley_stars_harassed_by_trump_supporters.html

At UCLA a random male student walking with a group told a passing female student “I hate Asians”. Those small incidents don’t make the news but I’m sure there’s a ton of this stuff going on right now.

@ClaremontMom I’m also surprised and disappointed to see this stuff happening in CA.

In California teachers have been suspended, one because he said people would be deported and another because he devoted a lesson to comparing Trump to Hitler.

Schools need to respect all points of view and keep politics out of the classroom.

Today some students are threatening walk outs. I worry that students who don’t want to participate will be bullied or ostracized. They may need ‘safe spaces’.

As horrible as these incidents are, I’m kind of glad the closet racists/bigots are revealing themselves.

“A lot of manipulation and deceitful tactics out there. Let’s not believe everything we see in the news at face value.”

Or maybe they are doing their job finally and publishing the truth, rather than it be media conspiracy against conservatives and so forth. If this is all press making a mountain out of a molehill, why did Trump himself on 60 minutes denounce all the hate going on and tell people to cut it out?

Not to mention that this uptick has been reported by everyone from groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center to local law enforcement to the FBI, there has been a surge in hate crimes reported.

This shouldn’t be so surprising, the old “do as I say, not as I do” doesn’t work, Trump the candidate and his surrogates used all kinds of derogatory, demeaning language about minories, blacks and LGBT people, and it isn’t surprising that people have taken this as carte blanche to be able to do so themselves. One of the things I have heard mentioned time and again with Trump being elected is people saying they were looking forward to a return to the right of ‘free speech’, for me kind of hard to not assume they are talking about the right to demean those they don’t like, call them names, etc. What is really scary are reports I have heard, both from people I know who are teachers, and in news reports, that young kids in schools, kids 5,6,7 years old, saying horrible things to kids who are different, that if it is true is really sad and scary.

The leader or leaders of a country set the tone for what is acceptable and what isn’t, so this doesn’t surprise me.

Is he really anti LBGT though? I thought I remember him saying he was a-okay with same sex marriage because “that’s a New York value.” Or something to that effect.
