Management building

can anyone tell me about this buliding…just general info, the tech inside, the classrooms, class sizes, how old are the things inside, etc…

and how far is this buliding from the new rez? i know its extremely far from the upper rezes…

and can anyone confirm a rumour i heard…apprently there are no management classes on friday?..

I’ve been to the building, but didn’t really look around inside too much. The front entrance is off Sherbrooke and I think the closest perpendicular street is Peel. It has this big slab of concrete leaning against the front door, which was originally supposed to be painted with Bronfman Building on it, but they got lazy or haven’t gotten to it yet, so…yea. The front foyer is newly renovated so it looks pretty decent. There’s a little bistro thing inside so I guess it’d be pretty convenient if you wanted to grab something to eat in between classes or whatever. There’s a career centre and another room whose purpose I forget in the front foyer as well. I think there are 5 floors and a basement sort of thing. In the basement there’s a caf, I think, and a computer lab. They do have flat screens and stuff, and the technologies appears to be pretty up to date. The floors upstairs really don’t look all that nice. The walls are painted yellow, I think, or blue…or both? hallway’s kinda narrow and I think a lot of the profs’ offices are on the 5th floor. The classrooms I saw looked like standard classrooms with a projector. There is one bigger lecture “hall” on the first floor that seats more people and looks like a traditional business classroom, with the long tables and the turny chairs that are in rows that kind of slant down a bit. I know this probably makes it sound pretty bad, and compared to Queen’s commerce’s facilities it is, but it’s not THAT bad. I think it is a little bit far from the upper rez, but you can take the bus…should be a short ride. New rez is right off of Sherbrooke too, but it’s a few blocks away, so you’d probably have to walk for a good 10-15 minutes. Actually, it takes about 10 minutes to walk from the upper rez to the main campus on the east end, and then you just have to cross over to get to the Bronfman building. Bronfman building’s right beside the library and bookstore. About the no classes on friday rumour, I did hear from a finance student that Thursday night was the party night, so I’m guessing that that rumour may very likely be true.

well i was never expecting mcgill’s buliding to even come close to the queen’s one…good to know its not that bad…

there is no bus from upper rez to anywhere on campus. in fact, make that no bus within the campus period. there’s a bus on sherbrooke, pins, and parc, but those will not help if you live in rez and need to get to class.

bronfman is on the corner of mctavish and sherbrooke

management doesn’t have classes on fridays, unlike other faculties, so thurs is the party night…but if ur a 1st year u have to take classes in other faculties, so you’ll MOST LIKELY still have classes on fridays… unless you do some creative scheduling

there are two cafeterias, one on the ground floor (new), and one in the basement where the mus office is (management undergrad society). the basement one’s been suffering because the new one is pretty nice and has better selection, so i don’t know how much longer it’ll last.

bronfman’s kinda small and has the nickname “bronfman high”.

i have no idea *** the “big slab of concrete” mentioned above is.

upper rez to bronfman in a hurry will take 10 minutes. i kid you not. you learn to walk fast and the slope is in your favour. 13 max if you’re a slow poke.

new rez to bronfman in a hurry will take around 15 minutes…it’s flatter and you have more intersections and etc. i have no idea why takes so much longer when you’d expect it to be shorter. i guess u could run ur ass off and get there in 10.

comp labs in bronfman rock. the tech fund makes sure the stuff is up to date and useful, and management students have a 24 hr lab, so if ur laptop’s busted or if u have group work, it’ll be a godsend.

class sizes: smaller than most arts classes. the faculty’s small in general…but not too small. it’s pretty decent. profs are friendly too.

bronfman’s not old at all…and it just got some major renovation work so it’s pretty nice compared to leacock and arts.

gd luck!

well, if it’s only about a 10 min walk, bus won’t be any good. I swear, there’s a big slab of concrete leaning against the front door (the red part) of the bronfman building. I think they should turn the basement caf into something else. Would there be enough space in the bistro on the main floor? When I went there there were quite a few people sitting in the caf in the basement. The walls in the hallways are pretty ugly. We should do something about that. At least Leacock looks stately.

again…no concrete. when did you go there??

leacock smells funny and cannot handle the amount of people that go through/in it. i think you’re confusing it with the arts building. leacocks’s the tower next to it.

the basement caf is basically a huge hangout and a great place to do group work. it’s also where the MUS is and the location of events such as beer and pizza with the profs, thursday night tradition (cheap beers), and carnival games in january.

yea, I think I am confusing the Leacock building with the Arts building. And yes, it’s probably because they’re attached to one another. I went to the Bronfman building twice, once in march and again in May. There is a slab there…towards the left side of the door when you’re facing it. lol, it’s no big deal though- not worth this much discussion. I have a question about the management program though. In first year, do you necessarily have to take all of those electives or “complementary courses”? Can you go ahead and take a few second year courses? And does anyone know if the Algebra & Geometry, and Calculus courses that you replace Math for Management with are hard? I want to skip them and take my IB credits, but if it’s hard then I might want to redo it.

did you do Math higher?

I think you get second year standing if you did…so u will be directly enrolled in the 3 yr program

the credits you get depends on what subjects you did at Higher level…for example if u didnt do a science or social science at HL…then you have to do the complemetary course science/humanity course worth 6 credits…

I asked the McGill guy who came to my school…he said that we wont know what credits we got and which program (3yr or 4yr) we will be in till they process our IB results…

I took Math, English and Chem at HL. They’re not going to force us to take second year standing if we do well, are they? I hope I did well for my higher levels. I’ve given up on physics. I looked at a summary or brief description of the things covered in their calculus classes and we’ve covered all of it too, but I’m just afraid that I’ll have forgotten most of it by the end of the summer. I don’t want to fall behind in class.

well i did methods…with the calculus option…and i covered pretty much everything as well (except applications to business)…

but anyway since i wont get credit for math methods…i have an excuse for going into the 4 yr program…
i dont know…since u did math higher (assuming u get 5s in ur HLs)…they might force you to do the 3 yr program…i know a girl my school last year was forced to do the 3 yr science program against her will at mcgill…she was complaiing when she came back for christmas
if i was in science though…i think i would definately would be in the 3 yr program since i did 2 sciences at HL…

oh- my understanding that if you do IB- get 5s in all ur higher levels- u place into U1 no matter what ur program is and what u did or did not do higher level. that changes everythin then. the thing is i’m going into bach of arts and science and so if i did math methods and sl physics does that mean i have to go do the freshman science program. damn
(sorry i’m jus seeing if you guys can help before i ply my advisor with overly verbose and confused questions by email)

really?..

no way in hell i am going to second year management…i want to get a science minor/major as well…

how do u get ur advisor?..i havent even got my package yet…

You’re advisor should email you soon (they said mid-June at the latest, I think) - I got an introductory email last week from mine. Then you can respond and bombard him/her with tons and tons of questions :)

I’m going into management too! But I go to a small private school in Vancouver, so I didn’t take any AP courses or IB… so I’m nervous! I should be studying for provincials… but procrastination is in full blown form! Anyways… I was just looking at the class schedules and stuff, and I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between course sections, for planning schedules and stuff?

different course sections = classes at different times. sometimes, different teachers.

use http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/canada/

you really don’t need to take any IB or AP classes. From the looks of it, for those of us who did might be a tad screwed. But if they put us in second year what about all those other complementary and compulsory courses from first year that we have to take? It’s so ■■■■■■■■ because we’d be kinda stuck in between first and second year. We covered a lot in math and we did the stats option, so second year stats should be a lot easier. We’ve covered a lot of what they’re learning too. Let’s just hope I did well on my exams.

exactly, i’m scared to email my advisor til my results come out because what if i’m set on a particular schedule and then results come out and everything is different?

hmm i normally don’t give out really really good advice, but here goes nothing.

on the first day that you can register for classes on minerva, do it asap. cause there aint nothing worse than being beaten out by perky, soon-to-be-college students. normally the system will lock you out thanks to too many people online, so make sure you have the CRN numbers written down in advance. if you get locked out of the system, change ur password. that’s the backdoor to minerva.

have fun registering and trying to get spaces in the any fun classes which may or may not have already been filled up by people who’re already allowed to register :-)

So the class schedules and everything that they have online now is basically what it’s going to look like in August right? I still don’t have an advisor yet.

If you’re in management, don’t expect to talk to an advisor anytime soon. The core is pretty much set and those first few weeks of school = filtering at the bcom office and most people will be “answered” by the desk staff who will turn away almost everyone from talking to an advisor. You can always email an advisor on the Bcom website, that’s what I’ve been doing recently…
