March for Our Lives

@roycroftmom It often is their intention, which is why the law enforcement protocol post-Columbine has been to immediately enter, locate and engage. Both Columbine and Newtown ended in suicide as soon as first responders arrived or engaged.

The NYC march was so impressive and inspiring. We got there early and were close enough to see and hear the speeches on the screens. The student organizers were poised and well spoken. We heard from survivors and others touched by mass shooting in Parkland, Las Vegas, Sandy Hook and even 9-11 kids. Just as importantly, we heard from those who lost parents, kids and friends to everyday gun violence. The rally started on time and ended after a little over an hour and the march began. No politicians or celebrities spoke, but the Broadway kids sang a beautiful song written by Parkland Students and a group from Harlem named Guns Down, LIfe Up, gave a great performance. All in all, these kids (with help from Everytown for Gun Safety) did a great job.

For years we’ve been hearing about “snowflakes” and the implications of what a poor job we as parents have been doing. Maybe not. We shall see.

I was at the DC march. So inspirational after I had been so pessimistic about any movement toward change. As someone who is 5’1" I was feeling really claustrophobic squished in with all the people on Pennsylvania Avenue where I could see the Jumbotrons, so after some effort I managed to extricate myself and just read all the signs around the edges of the march.

My nephews, now in college, went to Great Mills High School in Maryland.

Did anyone else see the piece on PBS Newsletter… so poignant, the librarian from Sandy Hook ES and the librarian from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, friends for over 30 years marching together in DC

Clearly I meant to type PBS NewsHour, not Newsletter

The more I read about and listen to these kids, the more impressed I am. Adults who mock or attack them (and it appalls me that some adults are doing this) will do so at their peril, as evidenced by events in the past day or so.

I hope some college recognizes what an asset David Hogg will be to the student body. I am tweeting those advertisers.

I was wondering if the student organizers might have new thoughts about where they want to attend or what they want to do. A gap year might make sense if they plan to be busy with the movement through November at least. To my knowledge, the UCs where David Hogg applied do not allow for gap years after admission.

I think these students are getting really smart with their message. I didn’t know anything about the David Hogg issue until you all mentioned it. I see that he immediately replied back with a list of Laura Ingraham’s sponsors and their Twitter accounts suggesting a boycott. And it worked!! Several sponsors reacted.

Way to go young people, use your consumer power!!!

I think the $1.05 labels are brilliant. Senators are probably squirming in their seats, I won’t name any particular names

I agree, they should take a gap year. They may have some good gap year accomplishments to display by the RD cycle next year.

@intparent I’m really hoping they have even more excellent accomplishments to claim by late-November next year.

Theyve already made a change.
Laws are already changing and public opinion has changed. And no one knows if it’ll hold but for whatever reason there’s been a significant shift in people’s views - not just your garden variety liberal person who never was for gun rights in the first place but people who squirm at the thought of ‘gun control’ but want GUN SAFETY. Because if it can happen in Parkland (suburb with 150-200k medium income, well-funded highly respected public school, more Republican than the county)… it can happen anywhere and your kid may be next. And most adults know that giving weapons to kindergarten teachers won’t solve the problem (most parents can see the issue: if the teacher goes to shoot the shooter, who protects MY kid and makes them go into the closet? If the teacher opens the door to attack the gunman, doesn’t she open the door to the classroom where MY kid is?)

We forget that these tools are second nature to them and they can be GOOD at it, they know the codes, they know the technique, they know how it works at least as well as adults, they know the power of these platforms and can harness it, they have everything they need. Plus they’ve said they want to dedicate their time to making sure such a massacre doesn’t happen again. Motivation+ intelligence+ skill + speed + getting underestimated again and again due to age = adults taken by surprise and overtaken .

538 just published an article titled “Gun policy is already changing in the wake of Portland”.

A child just brought a powerhouse to her knees with a tweet.

Think the powers that be get it yet?

Can someone explain the $1.05 labels, please? I am missing it.

@romanigypsyeyes of course not

I’m not faking it. And neither are millions of others.

This thread and all its supporters prove it isn’t fake outrage as we are all outraged by where this country is on this issue right now. Sorry not everyone can see it. Perhaps try consuming multiple sources of media for your news.

Thanks @doschicos. I spoke at a career fair today at a middle school. I spoke with the faculty. The students there also planned can carried out their events RE gun violence.
