The point of this thread is that when Boston College doesn’t accept a Kennedy kid, that’s news. Man bites dog.

It probably IS more common than we assume. Famous peoples’ kids not getting accepted at College X, that is. NOT a Kennedy being turned down by Boston College. I sincerely doubt that’s more common than we assume. In fact, it appears that it still hasn’t happened. Usually, famous people don’t talk publicly about it, though.

Also, La Schwarzeneggrette isn’t just any old child of a famous person. On one side, she is a member of what is essentially America’s royal family AND the child of a well-known TV personality. As far as Boston College is concerned, her family is the highest-status clan in the college’s core community, and she is a close (enough) relative of the senior senator from its state. Her grandfather founded the Peace Corps. Then, on her father’s side, she is the child of the sitting governor of the country’s most populous state, a national political player, AND one of the most popular and successful actors in the history of the world. Who is a former Mr. Universe.

She is not just a People Magazine story, she’s an entire issue. There aren’t a ton of applicants like that out there. Except maybe her Cuomo cousins in a few years.

Maybe it was her essays ;)

LOL!!!

JHS, I love your post, but have to point out one big factual error: “…her family is the highest-status clan in the college’s core community.” THis is not true. The Kennedys were desperate to fit in with the “good” people of Boston & initially struggled for acceptance among the Bluebloods. As Catholics (expecially the Irish) were shut out of the moneyed WASPy world, they started their own academic network up & down the East coast & out in the midwest with, most notably, Notre Dame. The Kennedys continued to claw their way into the WASPy world of the ivy league. They were never a part of the Catholic college network. Perhaps this is why BC is snubbing the new generation? Despite her People Magazine profile? (Or she may be of very average intelligence, like the vast majority of her relatives.)

I should add that I was steeped in the Irish Catholic core community. Plenty of us despise the Kennedy clan & the taint of lawlessness, scandal, and immorality they bring to the table.

It’s certainly true that the Kennedy’s were and are Irish/Catholic and therefore, by definition, not WASP, the actual record indicates that it didn’t take them all that long to get into the blueblood schools. Consider:

P.J. Kennedy - his parents came over on the boat from Ireland. He went to Boston College.

Joseph P. Kennedy - son of P.J. Went to the prestigious Boston Latin School and Harvard. It’s true he was blackballed from the Porcellian final club at Harvard, but then so was the arch-WASP Franklin Roosevelt.

Joseph Jr., John F., Robert F., and Edward Kennedy - sons of Joseph P. All four graduated from Harvard. John also attended Princeton briefly before dropping out due to illness. And before college all four graduated from elite, blueblood prep schools: Joseph Jr. & John from Choate and Robert & Edward from Milton Academy.

And it has continued on into the next generations. Lots of Harvard/Radcliffe. Lots of Ivy League. They just don’t seem all shut out of the blueblood WASP schools to me. It took my own WASP family seven generations after immigrating from England to get the first family member into Harvard. It took the Kennedys two.

And now Katherine Schwarzenegger has come full circle - back to BC where her great, great, grandfather P. J. went to school.

(I’m not sure where this Notre Dame connection comes in. Must be some other branch of the Kennedy family.)

can we find out if Katherine is actually going to BC?

It is great to see that the rich and famous also have the same nightmares and concerns that the unknown and middle-class experience. Of course, their anguish is not the same as mine.
The point of the original quote by Shriver was really to show how Russert was willing to help a friend. I doubt that BC was the first choice for the student. I would be thrilled with an acceptance by BC if the weather wasn’t so unattractive. USC has so much to offer and excellent weather.
This thread reflects our society. Everyone is so concerned with “celebrities and the famous” and I must admit I am too. If only they would share some of their enormous fortune so I can pay for my first born’s first year of college.

(Sticker, I KNEW somebody was going to say what you did. I am prepared to yield to your better knowledge of the Boston Irish Catholic community. But I stand by my point that the Kennedys are ultra-high-prestige in that millieu, even if they are resented. And of course their engagement with BC is less than with other Local Institutions Too Capitalized To Name. But that’s precisely why it would have been craaazy for BC to pass her up.

Coureur, Rose Kennedy herself complained about not being “accepted” by the WASPs. All her life, this complaint was voiced. Not surprising. Aren’t there thousands of posts on CC about self segregating by class at elite schools? When the Kennedy political power soared, plenty of WASPs were eager to jump on board. But they were still seen as riffraff in many circles. To say the Kennedy family was very cognizent of the prestige of the ivy/WASP world is a huge understatement. They wanted to distance themselves from the Irish Catholic families who loyally supported the BCs. As for a ND connection: Ted’s cousin (the one Ted tried to have take the blame for driving the car off the bridge) was a Notre Dame grad. Joe Gargan, I believe was his name. That branch of the family valued a Catholic education. I have no idea if later generations are followng in that path.

I know BC doesn’t get much traction on CC, but check out the admission rates & admitted student profile. It’s crasy competitive. D’s Catholic h.s used to have twenty kids admitted a year. Now the Harvard rejects are lucky to gain a spot. So wait-listing Arnold’s D was likely because she wasn’t a superstar & the attention the wait-list designation might gain would be a bit of free publicity. Although the number of applications to BC is enormous already!

This thread is so nasty I can’t stand it.

I have no issue with taking potshots at Brittney or Lindsay or those NYU twins whose name I can’t remember- they are entertainers, and where they go to college and what they wear and what their SAT’s were is carefully spun by their publicists to further their careers and make them as marketable as possible in the public eye.

This kid is not a celebrity, for god’s sake- she’s a HS kid who had the good luck to be born into a prominent, wealthy family, and the bad luck to be the subject of much unfair and speculative gossip about how distinguished or undistinguished her HS career was, how many times her cousin had to take the bar exam, how dissed her grandma felt by Boston’s elite… give me a break.

Her mother made a poor judgement call in discussing BC in a public forum, but that doesn’t make the kid a public figure. Wait until she releases a video on MTV or runs for Congress herself before deciding that she’s a worthy target of innuendo and schadenfreude.

LOL! And the Kennedy clan doesn’t carefully control & market their image? If the girl in question had applied to BC under an assumed name, I’d be with you. But she & her famous cousins willingly play off of their name to gain advantages in all areas of life. If one does that, one must accept the negative side.

Sorry sticker but you are wrong. There are dozens of Kennedy cousins (and this kid is one of them) who have done nothing to attract the public’s attention. She has not run for office, she has not sought out a career where she could trade on her connections, and she hasn’t been convicted of a felony (unlike some of her cousins). And applying to college under an assumed name would most likely be considered fraud and lead to retraction of the admissions offer once the facts came to life.

Do you want total strangers making snarky comments about your kid?

Sorry to be persnickety, but let me correct an erroneous statement.
Eunice Shriver is Schwartzenegger’s grandmother; Rose Kennedy is the great-grandmother.

And yes, old Joe Kennedy did everything conceivable to diminish his Irish Catholic heritage. For example, he had a grand old time rubbing elbows with the royals at the Court of St. James as the American Ambassador to England. But reportedly, old Rosie clung to her faith and roots to her dying day.

I agree with what blossom said (#112).

This all began because the child’s mother told a nice story about Tim Russert at his memorial service. The fact the child did or did not get into BC is truly NOT the point and, in my opinion, none of our business.

Let’s take it all in the spirit that it was intended . . . Tim Russert was a nice guy who tried to help his friends, even when, as in this case, his friends probably had better connections than his own.

In my religion we’d call him a mensch. He truly was and he’ll be missed.

Inthebiz- great post

Agreed, blossom, inthebiz and tom. THis thread is beginning to sound like the Ted Kennedy thread, and that was downright disgusting. He made an appearance in the Senate today to pass the pivotal medicare bill vote. [Ailing Kennedy returns to Senate for key vote - Yahoo! News](http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080709/ap_on_go_co/kennedy_medicare) Thank you Ted Kennedy. You deserve the 2 minute standing ovation you got.

I’m very late to this discussion – like a year + – but I had to weigh in. I have 2 friends, who worked with JFK in the DA’s office and they reported that he was very nice, well-mannered, extremely intuitive and no fool. When it comes to passing the bar – JFK was a dyslexic and I think it is to his credit that he bothered to take it 2 more times despite the public scrutiny and painful comments made by individuals like yourself, who have no idea what it is like to be intelligent and suffer from dyslexia – I can assure you that I am no Kennedy family sycophant, but I do admire JFK, Jr.

It is common knowledge he was dyslexic! He should have received the accommodations the first time around!
