What is going on? It’s seems like I am seeing these stories every other week?!?
There are bad apples in every profession, I guess! And these days, we hear about EVERY case that comes along. It is sad, though.
Years ago, many things would have been reported in the local paper and not noticed nationally.
It’s nothing new. They’re just getting attention now.

Great
How long ago was Marybeth Letoureau?
This makes me sick! I don’t know how any teacher could do this. Ugh, ugh, ugh!
Teachers should make students feel safe at all times.
I remember starting in jr high a group of the hs teachers - coaches, pe instructors, would have parties and essentially be dating some of the girls. I always thought it was gross. Fast forward to my freshman year of college - after seeing it through high school as well, my mom calls me completely flabbergasted - it hit the news, the teachers were all charged, etc. She was floored I had known all along. I always called them pervy, I just really didn’t know I should have spoken up.
I think this has been going on forever. I also think a lot of things just weren’t always talked about.
I think there was a time when society was less likely to view female teacher/male student as abuse/an issue.
It actually is new (even if the impulse isn’t).
The reason for it, among other things, is largely the availability of private communications for teenagers.
It is absolutely NOT new for teachers to be sexually active their students.
It’s not even new for female teachers to be sexually active with their male (or female) students.
I’ll just give one example: the abuse of young boys by religious teachers for decades upon decades that was known and covered up.
What constitutes a special ed student? Does it include things like ADD or dyslexia?
@emilybee , Marybeth Letourneau and her victim are finally getting a divorce. I guess she finally got too old for him. Sarcasm
Eta, Or, maybe he isn’t young enough for her anymore. Either way, disgusting.
^ Disgusting is right.
^Actually, I was surprised that they stayed married as long as they did.
and Laurie (Bambi) Bembenek, and Brigette Trogneux, Alexandria Vera, Amy McElhenney, same allegations,

As just one of many **many/b examples, Choate Rosemary Hall, a prestigious prep school that counts JFK and Glenn Close amongst its alums, has recently admitted cases of abuse going back to 1963.

@HarvestMoon1 Special ed could be a number of things but at our school special ed wouldn’t be kids with ADD.
And then there is the case of Emmanuel Macron and his wife. What amazes me most about their story is that after divorcing her husband and marrying Macron, whom she met when he was 15 and she was his teacher, she was able to continue her teaching career.
ETA I see that @younghoss listed her under her maiden name.
Some such marriages seem to work–Will and Ariel Durant for one.
Looks like they were able to prosecute her because Connecticut prohibits teachers (and coaches) from engaging in sexual activity with students. I don’t think all states have that prohibition. This boy was 18 so they didn’t get her based upon his age. The other possibility is that he didn’t have the capacity to consent because of mental impairment which is also included in Connecticut’s second degree sexual assault definition.
She was married with children of her own which really makes you wonder what the hell she was thinking. She obviously has some major issues to resolve.
Letourneau’s first name is not Marybeth.
