Mary Matalin

She just got older. Our mental image of her was largely formed from the Clinton years. If you hadn’t seen yourself in the mirror since the mid-90s and you suddenly took a look today, you’d probably be trying to figure out what was wrong with your own self too.

I think it’s how thin she is and that the hairstyle looked like a wig.

There’s an excerpt from the book and a couple of photos in the December Vogue:

[An Exclusive Excerpt from James Carville and Mary Matalin’s Memoir, Love and War - Magazine](http://www.vogue.com/magazine/article/an-exclusive-excerpt-from-political-power-couple-james-carville-and-mary-matalins-new-memoir/#1)

MM looks quite lovely, especially in the photo where she is wearing the black and white dress. I think that whoever did her hair and makeup for the Vogue article did a great job, and I suppose the photos are touched up a bit. Still, she doesn’t look sick at all and they would only be a few months old.

I didn’t think she looked emaciated but I did find her hair to be awful when I saw her on TV. That’s something she CAN control, even though she is getting older. I guess it could have been a wig but I hadn’t thought about it at the time. I do hope she’s not ill.

I though she looked okay, but I can see how if you hadn’t seen her since he 90’s it would be a little startling. She has changed. And, yes, the hair was not so good this morning. As I recall, she was always somewhat hair challenged. I love her and also hope she is fine.

Love this couple! I was more concerned with what appeared to be a “word retrieval” problem when she was speaking on ABC this morning.

I noticed that too, ECmotherx2. She lost her train of thought a few times, and I remember her always so razor sharp. She seemed a bit medicated.

Reading this thread it sounds like she went from one show to another all day and canceled later in the day when J. C. was on by himself. I saw her on Morning Joe. That’s really early and she was a little off. But very little. Sounds like it got worse later. So rethinking. Hmmm.

I want Vogue to take my picture!

James Carville irritates the daylights out of me (and I’m married to a southerner). I have never understood what she saw in him, as brilliant and pretty as she is (or was, apparently).

She had too much plastic surgery. I saw her this morning and remarked to my dh that she looked as if she had been under the knife.

I don’t think she’s ever been an attractive woman, but she’s apparently one who benefits a LOT from a good hair and makeup team. If she didn’t have her usual stylists working on her today, and was stuck with whoever they assigned to her at the first show, that might explain things.

I always thought she was attractive. Then again, I never would expect a 60 year old woman to look as if she was 20.

I think she’s very attractive, and if she is 60 then she looks better than 98% of 60-year-olds (except for the hair yesterday). Her hair has always looked good before. She has very nice bone structure, great cheekbones. That kind of face ages better - maybe she hasn’t had plastic surgery? Maybe it’s just strong bone structure combined with being very thin?

It could be that NYMomof2. Definitely. She really did look super thin to me.

Mary Matalin irritates the daylights out of ME!!! Never thought she deserved the rep of being a political guru. I considered Lee Atwater to be a political adversary to my usual line of thinking. But Atwater was nonetheless sharp as a tack. Matalin was his understudy. To paraphrase the late Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Matalin is no Lee Atwater.

All that being said, she and Carville are a fascinating couple and I am glad that their happy marriage has transcended the usual nonsense coming out of Washington DC. Loved Carville’s statement on CBS Sunday Morning that he majored in inebriation at LSU.

Thanks for posting this, NYMom. I loved the excerpts so I’m going to order the book. I’m a political junkie and I’ve always enjoyed these two.

She’s only 60? She looks much older than that. It seems the work she has had done and the botox are prematurely aging her.

Maybe just a little bit too much.

I adore those two. I thought both of them looked age appropriate. The only thought that struck me was that she was “mellower” than in her younger years. The “way” people look at 60 can run the full spectrum. I have a few friends that could pass for 40 and a few that could pass for 70. One thing for certain is we all age differently.
