Masks

The Costco masks are a decent quality too.The er pieces dot pop off quickly like many of the others.

I have been making masks for family and friends but ran out of fabric. Now I’m ordering cottons from Mood Fabrics and love the cotton shirting fabric, but it needs a lot of ironing during the sewing process and after washing.

What I find interesting is that I am now getting requests for embellished masks. One young lady is a jazz singer and we made a mask embellished with antique cloth and metallic ribbons with lots of ties hanging down. This has now become my new thing, embellished boho masks for my D and her hipster friends

@coralbrook, that sounds so cool! If you are seeing through the outward layer, are you adding a filter or 3rd layer of fabric? I have an embroidery machine and have thought about embellishing, but am worried the third layer plus extra cool stuff on the front will make it heavy/hard to breathe.

@coralbrook , we should have stopped by while driving Sunset Cliffs earlier today!

I bought a mask at the farmers market stand yesterday for $10. The woman gave me her card; she has a shop on Etsy where the same masks are $15 - but free shipping. She said if I saw anything I liked online, she could bring it to the market.

I’ve been eyeing the five pack from Old Navy - there’s a set of five shades of green that would go great with my outfits ;). https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=654503162&cid=1159266&pcid=1157699&vid=1&grid=pds_16_37_1#pdp-page-content But I’m testing my farmers market mask to see if the nose wire helps the fit. I really only need a mask while grocery shopping and occasionally at the beach.

Marilyn and others, I’d buy from the sewers, not the big stores. They need the $ and work hard for it.

I have also been trying to support local businesses with my mask purchases. I bought my Vera Bradley ones from a local Hallmark and my others from a local gift shop.

I have also made several masks with hand embroidery and machine embroidery for these young gals. I do the embroidery around the lower back edges, leaving the mouth and nose part free for 2 layer or filter insertion. I do the embroidery on outer layer before sewing the layers together. The cotton shirting material is a tight weave so I’m just hoping they are good enough. I’m also doing black masks with a lot of fun appliqués around the back edges.

I’m really trying to make my masks as thin as possible, so not doing any appliques or additional sewing. A friend had a sparkly one on the other day. I have trouble breathing just looking at it!

I found some Anna and Elsa fabric and have a lot of little girls (and my 24 year old daughter) waiting impatiently for the sweat shop to turn them out.

My 3 yr old grandson has to have 3 clean ones per day to go to pre-school if he goes. Fortunately the other grandma sews and has made him a stash of ones with his favorite characters. Trains, dinosaurs, Mickey Mouse. He is up to 4 hours at a time now Including playing outside and going to the zoo.

I’ve been kicking myself. I donated a TON of kids fabric (including lots of Frozen prints) to a charity sewing group making kids’ quilts in early February. I really could use that stuff about now!

I was out today and noticed several children, all about 4-8, and all wearing their masks while shopping. They aren’t tugging at them and don’t seem hampered by them at all. I notice they are small sized and of course have cartoons or Broncos or superheros on them. Not an issue.

Some neighbors just brought by a bunch of bananas so I gave a homemade mask to each of the children. All of them have matching animal prints.

I have some kids’ flannel; pm me if you want me to share.

I am a mask maker, mostly for a family member in health care and their staff. I’ve figured out a pattern they seem to like and they keep requesting more so my fabric stash is getting used up! IDK if this is the right place to pose a question but here goes…I am relatively young and healthy (40’s) as is my DH. I work 90% alone in my office and am not a big shopper so my spare time, other than sewing masks, involved gardening or solo walking in my rural neighborhood. My county is doing well with controlling the spread without masks being required. Part of me just wants to get the Covid while I am young(ish) and healthy and don’t rise expose many people in my day to day life. Sort of like how we used to think about the chicken pox -just get it over with sooner rather than later since it’s pretty unavoidable. I realize there is a lot we don’t know about this virus but some certainties are that it is worse and more lethal as we age and it’s never going away. What’s wrong with not worrying too much about getting it now, while I have the best odds of a full recovery?

There is no evidence that getting it once protects you from getting it again. It really doesn’t make sense to get it now and get it over with, because you aren’t getting it over with.

If you cannot read the article…

  1. Immunity is not a sure thing.
  2. Reinfection is possible.
  3. Even healthy young people can be hospitalized. You could take the bed of someone who needs it more/most.
  4. You may not die but you could suffer life long damage to body systems.
  5. Even mild cases are not necessarily “mild”.
  6. You still risk exposing others - your family, anyone at a medical facility you need to visit to treat your systems.
  7. Perfectly healthy people of all ages have died of COVID. Not just a few. MANY. Are you willing to take that risk?

A CNN host who had the virus discussed this issue with the Mom in a family who had been through it. Given their experiences and ongoing, not trivial residual problems, they were very clear that their advice is to avoid getting it if possible.

As others have said we don’t know enough about it yet and we don’t know if immunity will wane. It actually wasn’t a good idea to expose kids to chicken pox either. I heard of a case where a family did that, the dad didn’t know he had not had it (or maybe his immunity waned) and he ended up dying.

@fretfulmother – Thanks for the offer. I have plenty of fabric – I was just bummed because kids like the themed prints. I’ve been making adult masks til recently, when our Million Masks group started getting many requests for kids masks.

That darned fabric was sitting in my living room for over a year!

You mean, like this guy?
