Masks

I now have ‘mask insecurity’ if I don’t have at least 20 masks ready to go out the door at any moment. Sent about 25 out to cousins and a teacher going back to school who requested ‘teacher print’ masks. I then had to make another 25 to replace those.

I finally took a break today to make 2 baby blankets for a guy who was born 2 weeks ago (3 weeks early). Honestly, I had to think about it at every step, even though I’ve made 100 of these blankets in the past few years. I’m so into masks and only masks that I almost forgot my machine can do other things.

I’ve seen on the news today that neck gaiters are the least effective mask choice. I like the convenience of pulling up a neck gaiter, but I need to switch to something else.

The hospitals (and medical offices) do not allow neck gaiters and will give you a paper mask. I think it is because the gaiters are single layers and not connected to another layer and no filters.

I was happy to see that home sewn cloth masks are pretty good.

That seems like a reckless point of view. This isn’t chicken pox, not even close.

How do you know it’s “never going away”? With an effective vaccine and heavy compliance, it’s possible to vanquish it at some point in time. We’ve done it with other diseases through this route. These illnesses only reappear when vaccine compliance wanes.

I had asked about the Stark Vacuum masks, without response. I ordered a couple, and I have to say that I LOVE them! They’re comfortable, they stay put, and they don’t interfere with my glasses. I’m going to order some more.

First seeds, now masks. China is sending you an unsolicited mask. Creepy.

@Chedva I also had asked about the Stark mask and decided to order because of the online reviews. They just arrived today after the first order seems to have been lost somewhere in the USPS system. I received the ones with the adjuster bead on the ear piece, although I did not expect those. I tried one on quickly before getting them into the wash. Looking forward to trying one tomorrow at work.

When I ordered, they had buy 4, get one free. Decided to take a chance as I need a fresh mask each day. I will give one to my mother, and if my husband likes, he will take one also.

There’s a local sportswear manufacturer here that pivoted to mask making when all this started to keep their business afloat and their employees employed. The owner is an acquaintance/friend so we bought from their first batch when we were all learning and they were just one layer of cotton (pleated). They’re now more sophisticated and also sell contoured masks (two layer) and I just bought a few and tried one for the first time today. WOW – the contour masks are so much more breathable than the pleated ones (both are all cotton). It has been an interesting journey to figure out what works best for me.

And I’m disappointed about the news on gaiters because they’ve been my favorite either for walks (easy to pull up when someone comes within 10 feet) or when I have to stop at multiple stores and it can just hang out on my neck as I drive from place to place.

I don’t believe the study. How can it transmit 110% with a neck gaiter? BS

I need to read again, but I thought when I read the article that it said “fleece gaiter” which is different than the sports gaiters.

Well, I’m very excited! The beautiful print masks I ordered, will be here today. Ah, its a sad life when face masks bring such joy!

Tracking our Etsy order shows “Out for delivery” on our alma mater print masks. I was excited but just read no fall sports for the PAC-12, so now I’m kind of bummed. Not that I thought a mask would mean safety in a tailgate crowd, but now it’s a reminder of another thing lost for college students this year. ?

Because they divert the direction of the droplets, making them spread out over a greater area, and thus are worse than no mask.

This is an awesome video done by an EMT, with a simple trick to make paper surgical masks fit more snugly and not fog up glasses. It works so well that we’re going to toss our cloth masks.

Thanks, @MaineLonghorn I’m going to try a redesign of my cloth masks to be closer to this. I strongly prefer pleated masks because they expand and contract when I talk vs. the more fitted styles that work their way off the nose when people talk.

One of the children’s hospitals in our state is not allowing cloth masks, scarves or bandanas in their facilities. Every patient or visitor over age 2 must wear a medical mask at all times in their facilities. They will provide these if people do not walk in with one. (hospital provided masks, surgical masks and N95 masks).

I suspect other local health systems may follow.

I think medical facilities should issue masks when ppl walk in, regardless if the person walks in wearing one. It is my thought that masks should be free of outside influences in a med. facility.

Our local hospital has been requiring people entering the hospital to have a mask on, but then making them change into the surgical mask they provide if you pass the temp check. This has been the protocol for months.

I received my Starks masks. They are pretty small and disappointingly they are made in Vietnam. I thought I was supporting jobs here. : (
