We are finally getting started on a major renovation of our 26 year old home. The master has had NO work done at all. The footprint is not bad, but my plan was to remove the huge gross tub, make the shower a large spa-like shower and with the added space from removing the tub add some more storage. There will be a tub in the 2nd bath and a stall shower in the 3rd bath.
I have looked at model homes in our area and most have a small tub and stall shower, with a soaker tub or larger shower available as an upgrade. I don’t take baths and would LOVE a nice shower, but we plan to sell in a few years so want to be smart.
Would you buy a home that had a no tub in the master but a nice tub in a secondary bath? Contractor is coming tomorrow so I guess I am panicking!
As long as there’s a bath somewhere, I don’t think it needs to be in the master bath. It’s not unusual around here where there are lots of older houses.
I’m not a tub taker so I’d be fine with it but many in my family are. The standard size tub is fine, and fairly necessary for children, however most adults like an oversized or deep soaker tub.
Our master tubs have been used a few times total in 25 years. I would even prefer a master without a tub if there was a nice roomy shower (and a tub available in another bathroom).
A great shower is a must, but a tub isn’t necessary for us in the master as long as there is a tub in another bath. Actually, it was more important for us in the bathroom the kids used when they were little. So, yes, I would.
Just thinking about building another house. We will not put a tub in the Master.
The soaker tub in our Master is used 1-2 times a yr for the G’Son or when D visits.
It has to be dusted every week.
We have a house with NO bathtubs. The shower in the bathroom the kids share CAN be used as a shallow tub, and both kids have used it as such. D still uses it as a tub and soaks in it at age 25. Our “master” bath has no bath and no room for a bath without a significant remodel. It did not deter us in the least. I can’t remember the last time my folks used any of the bathtubs in their house. It has two bathtubs with showers and one bathroom with only a shower. It doesn’t really matter what WE think, I’d ask around to see what’s happening in your area in terms of sales and expectations.
H was very upset when we stayed at a hotel in Europe that had no shower, only a tub. We can more easily do without a tub than a shower.
We bought our last house 20 years ago with no tub in the master. There was a tub in the kids’ bathroom. We sold the house two years ago at an enormous profit - still no tub.
I think a tub is a waste of space and would definitely prefer a large nice shower. One tub somewhere in the house is nice for small children or tye-dying shirts, etc!
We bought our current house in 2008; it has no tub in the master bath. We are just happy to have a master bath, having never had one before! We have a big jacuzzi tub in another bath down the hall, and hardly ever use it.
I have no tub in my master now and that’s just fine with us. There is a tub in the second upstairs bathroom which would be fine for any children who may wander in. IME, that’s pretty much who uses a tub.
@whitepicketfence I have been thinking of starting this exact thread. I looked on Houzz to see what the thinking over there was. It seems a mix, many people don’t use the tub but those who do wouldn’t live without it. We would also have a tub in the hall bathroom, and are considering a hot tub outside for soaking but I think an actual bath in the master is still desired by a lot of buyers
I guess it does limit the resale possibilities a little bit. In our area, the real estate isn’t selling that quickly anyway, so I don’t think I want to do something that will shrink the options even a little bit. We still have room for a large stall shower, and a separate tub, it would just be less costly to leave out the tub. Decisions, decisions!
