I use my tub all the time , so it would make a difference to me. We have discussed changing our master bath. The shower is too small…and neither of us like the double sink. It would be nice to have storage closet in there. Oh well, maybe some day, but I wouldn’t give up my tub
I love a good soak and am not a fan of the “spa showers” especially the ones that dump water over your head.
But that’s me…
H and I are planning a master bath remodel soon and will include a tub.
I would, but (a) I do use my big spa tub a few times a year and look forward to it (we renovated in 2009 and redid the shower and tub) and (b) if it gives you a bigger closet thats a plus. I do not like claw foot tubs as they are too small and are, IMO, just a place to collect dust bunnies underneath.
We recently built a downsized home in a new community. Several of the floor plans did not offer a tub in the master bath. We opted for one of those. We have a lovely walk in shower and the few times that I have wanted to take a bath, I used the guest room bath. I do not miss the jacuzzi tub in had in our last house one bit.
Yes, absolutely - as long as there is another bathroom with a tub and I love taking baths. We might do a master bed/bath addition and the bathroom will only have a shower ( a nice big walk in one.)
I used to take baths a lot, especially after a hard workout. I think I have used my spa tub only once or twice in the two yeas since we bought this house. But in our neighborhood, it would be very bad for re-sale to not have a fancy spa jacuzzi type tub.
I think it really depends on your neighborhood. Check out the comps. A really nice updated bathroom with big shower and lots of jets and other goodies might just make people forget all about a tub.
I would love to take our huge jacuzzi tub that’s used yearly – and turn the area into a walk-in shower.
we have a tub in the kids bathroom. As long as there’s a tub in the house for kids baths, i’d be fine with no tub in master bath. Wish we could change it all!
We had a 2 person spa tub that took up about 30% of the floor in our master bath. Renovated to enlarge shower to a 3x5 size, add lots of useful storage and convert jetted tub with large deck to a simple deep, built-in soaking tub. Our use of the tub has gone from twice a year to twice a week.
I like having a tub in the master, but found an extra large one inconvenient to clean and fill. This one has a sprayer that makes for easy maintenance or hair washing, and no area of floor behind it to clean.
I would much prefer a master bath with a tub, particularly in a “raise the kids” property. In an empty nester home, a tub in another bath would be more workable.
Happy renovation!
Well you could put the plumbing pipes in for the tub without actually installing a tub. It would cost more than no prep for a tub at all, but that way when you come to sell the house you can either get a tub then or sell it as “plumbed for a tub”.
We are in the middle of renovating our bathrooms right now. We are making our shower larger, but also kept the tub. It’s a nicer tub than the ugly monstrosity that was in there. We will probably sell in 5 or so years, so this is what we are sticking with. Even though I kept my tub, not having a tub in the master wouldn’t keep me from buying a house.
It could hurt as there are some I know who want that tub because they use it and those who want it because it’s check point for resale.
No tub in the master would be an absolute deal breaker for me. However, I loathe those stupid “spa” tubs with the jets, sized for 2. No one who bathes ever uses those ugly monstrosities and I don’t blame people who want to rip them out. We will be re-doing our master bath very soon and I’m replacing the standard tub with a lovely deep soaking tub which will not take any more room than the standard, builder grade ones. We will also be enlarging our separate shower and including a built-in seat. We don’t have a huge bathroom but by re-configuring it carefully we can have everything we want as well as anything a buyer would want. Resale is important to me.
We redid our master bath a couple of years ago and my wife saw no need for a bath tub since we never used the existing fiberglas jacuzzi tub. We love the large, zero threshhold shower. There is a lot of open space, so I suppose if someone wanted to add a soaking tub it wouldn’t be a hard thing to add. Will it be a marketing problem if we sold our house? I don’t know. We have no plans to sell our house. We love the current bathroom, and are very glad we did the renovation, and don’t miss the tub at all. We have 2 bathtubs upstairs that we also never use.
Not only would I buy a house without a tub in the master bathroom, I would (and did) buy a house with no master bath.
Yes! Our current home only has a tub in the ‘kids’ bathroom. The master bathroom only has a shower and I’m very happy to only have one tub to clean. We (adults) only take showers and we only used the tub when the kids were little. Now they take showers and don’t use it to soak in. So strictly speaking, we don’t need even one tub now.
We have a large shower in our master, and a waste of space jacuzzi…that I want taken out out out! I want a nice soaking tub…no jets…and my shower could be a bit larger.
I would say…a tub in the main hall bath for the kids is LOTS more imoortant than a tub in the master.
I must be the only person that uses the jets. When we remodeled in 2009 we replaced our old jetted tub with a newer one. I drew the line, though, and different colored lights inside the tubwater. Really?
I am another vote for “essential” to have a tub in the master bathroom. I use it 1-2 times a week.
I could probably take or leave the jetted tub, but since the house came with it, I use the jets about half the time.
No. I definitely would not.
We are also faced with renovating and plan to replace our huge whirlpool tub with a smaller footprint soaker tub.
I just stand in the shower and don’t really see the need to have a giant one.
My tub has those multiple holes rather than the big “jets,” which creates a big fiz when you turn it on. It’s okay, but it splashes water everywhere, and it doesn’t pack the massage punch that the big jets do. But I’ve read that the big jets can be reservoirs for germs.
I cannot imagine buying a house without a master bath! There are a lot of things I’d sacrifice before I’d do that. It would be a total deal killer in my neighborhood. No way it would sell.
We just visited our house on a lark, as it was an open house in a neighborhood DH wanted to see. I was astounded to see that it had two separate baths in the master suite. His is fairly small but completely functional with attached closet, and mine is huge with a shower and tub and way more closet than I need. We were not looking for a house with separate baths, but I really love it. Well, mostly I really love having separate toilets areas.
