Master bath renovation-would you buy a house without a tub in master?

Yep, we took the tub out of our master bath to make a larger shower. It had the old large, ‘garden tub’ and a tiny shower. Now it has a huge shower and no tub. We love it. We figured as long at the other bathroom had a tub it woul be fine.

We redid our master bathroom several years ago. The tub was original to the house…green…sort of like vomit green. We did change the color to white. Since the homes in this area are older our tubs are original to the home and the rooms are “small” for a luxury home in other areas… Do we take baths? No…but if/when we sell this house we have to show lots of full baths. We didn’t put double sinks in the bathroom…I wanted/needed lots more counter space…and we don’t get ready together.

So it’s a choice…II would keep the tub.

My current house has no master tub and it means I walk in my towel back to the master from the bath almost nightly. I’d prefer not to do that and some floor plans/family might make that impractical anyways.

FWIW I think jets are nasty.

A shower counts as a full bath in real estate language in our neck of the woods.

I don’t think they were planning not to not have a master bath, nrdsb4, just not a master bathTUB. The house I grew up in had a small master bath and had a shower only. The house DS just bought has a shared (not private) bathroom with another bedroom on that floor with two entrances (not quite a Jack and Jill bath, but almost, I believe- haven’t seen it yet), and its small, with a combo tub/shower. The bedroom downstairs had a private bath, with shower only. Our house has a good sized shower, and I really like my big tub. Room for 2  And when I take one alone, its often because I am sore, so really appreciate the massaging jets and fun bubble mess it makes.

Here in WA, it is considered a 3/4 bath, so it is not uncommon to see a listing for "3 bedrooms 2 1/4 bathrooms (meaning that the house has a powder (1/2), a full kids bath(1), and a master bath with a shower and no tub (3/4) ).

@jym626, I was reacting to a post who said they bought a house without a master bath.

Sorry, should have quoted it.

So…another question: What is more important? Closet space or a tub? In our master we have (as built in the 30s) three walk in closets, i double deep closet, built in drawers and a dressing room with drawers. We do not have closet systems…I would lose far to much hanging space. But we do have a smallish bathroom.

All the "family bedrooms have private bathrooms…including the maid’s room.

My bathroom (DH and I do not share a bathroom) is 8’x10’. It has a 4’x4’ shower and a 4’x4’ soaking tub (33" deep), drawers and shelving, a pedestal sink, and a toilet. It feels very luxurious and I use the soaking tub almost every day.

Oh I see it now, nrdsb4. Wellsprings’ post # 33. Maybe they had what my DS has- a shared bathroom. DS’s fiancee grew up in a house with only one bathroom, in the hallway, upstairs (there was a smaller bath downstairs but it apparently rarely got used). She said that her dad took more time in the bathroom than her mom or her sister!

I love taking baths, but I would be fine with a nice shower in the master as long as there was a good tub elsewhere. And by “good” I mean a nice deep tub. Not one of those ginormous jacuzzis that no one ever seems to use, and not one of those awful shallow shower over tub things with a nasty sliding glass door edge and/or–horror of horrors–non slip surfaces on the tub floor. (Not nice to sit on!) The tub at my house, which is just about perfect, is an old, narrowish but deep cast iron tub on four legs.

Ironically, when I visit friends and family, usually the only decent tub is in the master and no one else can use it, but the master and mistress only take showers!

We will be renovating our two upstairs bathrooms in a couple of years. There is currently no tub in the master and that’s just fine with us. But the tub in the hall bathroom is one of those shower-over-tub things, currently with the awful glass doors that @Consolation just mentioned. So what is a good tub/shower combination? Is there such a thing??

Our master bath has a large spa type tub , but with no jets . So much better to keep clean IMO. My husband wants to put a large shower with no tub in our other full bath , but I see that as a problem for resale. My tub is too deep to wash babies / toddlers and this is a family house. We can’t sell any time soon , but it will happen some day and some of our personal upgrades could be detrimental to the future sale

We are thinking about getting rid of our jetted tub and putting in a claw foot tub. I was worried about resale. So I called a couple of real estate agents and asked them if it would affect resale. They all said no it shouldn’t. I would suggest calling a couple of agents in your area and see what they think about not having a tub in the master.as far as resale.

A couple of practical considerations. Every claw foot tub, as someone mention up the thread, has a dust bunny breeding ground underneath. A tub surrounded with a tile ledge is not as elegant-looking as a freestanding one, but it does have ample space where one can put a candle, a book, a glass of wine (or all of the above) whle taking a relaxing bath.

^ DH is the one who wants the claw foot tub…I’m almost positive that he is not going to light a candle, read a book or drink a glass of wine in the tub.

DIsclaimer: I didn’t read all the previous posts lol. Yes, I would purchase a home without a tub in the master bath. Our tub was used ONLY when the kids were preschool age. No adult has ever taken a tub and I’ve been here 30 years lol. Both kids started taking showers at about age 4?? I think its important to have a tub in a house that would be considered a “first-home” but other than that I doubt it would make a difference in the selling market, especially if the market was geared to older persons.

Now, let’s talk about outside showers, haha.

In the midst of planning a master bath remodel (yay, tuition is finally done!!) and definitely will rip out the tub and replace with a nice walk-in, glass-enclosed shower. We have a tub in the guest bathroom.

I think the last time I took a bath was the sitz bath I took after one of the kids was born…circa 1990.

In my neighborhood (an older much sought-after neighborhood within a city) master bathrooms are a rarity, unless a major remodel has been done. I once saw a house where a closet had been turned into a shower–not a bathroom, just a shower. Prettty strange. But I guess we sacrifice for the privilege of living here.

Haven’t read the whole thread, but not only would I buy one, I did 20 years ago. I never take baths–a large walk-in shower is much more to my preference. Agree with others that having a hall bath with a tub, however was a requirement.
