Also, the email I got was from the financial aid office signature, not any individual person’s
That email asked for you to upload you tax documents in the portal and also to send your tax documents via email? If it did not ask for you to send them specifically via email, I would not.
Dear
You are more than welcome to review the information you submitted on your CSS profile. Rest assured your documentation and information were carefully processed and reviewed. If you do not find any errors on the CSS profile then you are welcome to submit your parent’s most recent tax returns to get a re-evaluation.
Thanks,
This is the email
the reason I wished to mention the cost of living and a few other expenses is because that is the error I found on my CSS. I did miss a few car loans and stuff like that
IMO, you uploaded the tax docs and that’s all you need to do. I would not send your tax documents via email to an unspecified/possibly unattended email address. So, I would not send any email at all, they will see the new docs in the portal.
You can talk about possibly updating information on the CSS when you have your call/zoom on the 14th. Missing a few car loans isn’t going to make a difference to the level you need it to. Many schools don’t care at all about a family’s consumer debt, because that is a lifestyle choice (meaning some schools will say the family could have chosen to save for college rather than taking on debt to purchase a car.)
okay then.
InterestED
(Seen the error several times now, could be your autocorrect, check it systematically)
Have all documents ready for the call.
I am not sending a mail now as per the advice in the last few posts, so I am leaving that. I am going to make sure I have all the tax returns, wage statements and asset statements in hand along with the excel sheet of expenses
Will it be okay if I email them saying tax returns have been uploaded and I have booked an appointment. I am not sure how the system works at their end, but it seems quite discrete to me, so I just want to feel safe
Day after tomorrow is my meeting with Northwestern. Do you have any advice or things to consider for me?
Will your parents be joining the meeting? (they should)
From your perspective, this call is a fact finding mission. Tell them that the NPC you ran (have the details in hand) is quite different from their FA offer, and you requested this call to understand the factors that have led to the difference.
Then, you listen as the FA person explains what they did and why it might be different from the NPC results…right now you and your parents have no idea why the FA offer is double the NPC results. Your goal when you are done with this call is to have complete understanding of how they calculated your FA offer. Once you you have this information you can move forward.
You can ask them questions after they explain what they did. I would encourage you to remain unemotional and non-confrontational. It’s ok to say you need the price to be around the NPC results and that’s why you applied ED. But do that after you understand how they calculated your FA offer. They might be willing to increase their FA offer, or not…it just depends on the factors that explain the difference between NPC and actual offer.
Good luck.
THIS!
I’d have all documentation handy in case another # is needed by them from you. Hopefully you can handle without having to go back to them later c
Yes, I will have both my parents with me on that day. Thankfully, it is a public holiday here. I will have the net price calculator results with me as well as tax returns and other documents, like the purchase price of my houses. My mortgage details are available in the tax returns. z
Thank you everyone. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Good luck!
I had my meeting. The person said he cannot share the exact specifics of how they calculate need as it is a proprietary formula. He originally said the discrepancy was because I am in India. I showed him the original email, and he said he was unsure why there is such a big difference. He said all they do is substitute values into a formula, and he checked my npc, CSS and tax documents and said he is not sure what is the reason behind the discrepancy. He asked me to file a loss of income appeal and explain these circumstances. He also said the assets have very little relevance to this
I did raise the possibility that there was some misunderstanding with regards to how my income was derived from my tax documents. He asked me to mention this in the appeal.
This is not hopeless then.
Good job in any case.
Thank you. He did however say the probability they misunderstood my tax returns was quite low and that he has never seen a successful appeal that wasn’t based on job loss or change in circumstance, so I am pretty pessimistic here
