Math and science classes for senior year

hi! im currently a junior in highschool taking grade level chemistry and algebra 2 for my math and science credit. I am aware some people may see this as me being behind academically, but to give context my alignment for my science course was messed up due to me taking integrated physics and chemistry freshman year instead of biology since I enrolled to my highschool late and that was the only class with spots open. I have taken grade level math and sciences for all years, my main issue is that I feel as if I don’t have that many aps in my coursework and I was wondering if instead of taking grade level precal and physics I could instead take AP stats and Ap environmental, making my total of as from four to six. I don’t seek to do any stem related major in the future, I want to do prelaw and eventually law school. the reasoning behind my low aps is due to freshman year I took all grade level, I wanted to begin my AP classes sophomore year but due to a family emergency I had to miss a month of school thus my counselor did not allow me to sign up for any. The APS I have taken so far have been AP psych and AP Lang and I’ll be taking AP econ and gov next year for sure and a dual credit english three. I honestly just want to get into a decent school; my target is Texas a&m, reach is Rice, and safety is University of Houston. Thanks!

Suggest you look at a few schools you might apply to (some safety, some target, some reach) and check (1) their admission requirements and (2) the gen ed requirements.

For example, a school might require that you reach a specific math level, e.g. at least college level algebra or pre-calc, to even meet gen Ed’s. Others may require two math courses - above plus something more advanced like stats. Stats is probably more useful in the end but you can take that at college.

Keep in mind even some non-STEM majors require pre-calc or calc (business, Econ, some poli sci, psych) depending on the institution

Will you be in the top 10% of your class?

Did you take biology in your soph year?

I lean towards taking pre-calc rather than AP stats (could you do both?). Is honors or AP Pre-calc an option?

APES is probably ok rather than a full year of physics (assuming you took bio soph year).

Have you spoken with your HS college counselor about your schedule? What do they think?

I probably wont be top 10 percent but my gpa is a 3.8 uw, i did take bio in my sophomore year and i could hypothetically take precalc in the summer. thing is i know that precalc has more aspects from algebra 2 which im already struggling with and i just want to maintain my gpa. I spoke with my counselor and she’s a bit hesitant so she asked for me to research any colleges i want to apply to for their prereqs while she’ll ask her friend whos an ex admissions officer about it

ty! i guess that makes sense, ill try to research and go on from there

for summer classes it doesnt affect your gpa so i was thinking maybe grade level precal during the summer and ap stats during the school year but i dont know if it’ll be too much since i have a bunch of summer programs this year.

Is “grade level summer precalc” an accelerated option for advanced students or a remedial class for students who struggled during the year? I’m sure you see how that’d affect the pace and rigor (it’s okay if the course is just an intro to precalculus rather than accelerated&advanced: since you won’t be taking any precalculus or calculus in college it doesn’t matter - most “math gen eds” like Math for Citizenship or Art&Geometry only have Geometry&Algebra2 as pre-reqs.) If you’re struggling in Algebra2, you do NOT want to take an advanced/accelerated precalculus class over the summer !
I would recommend AP Stats Sr year and APES for a science, however your remaining courses better be the most rigorous your school offers - 2 from AP lit, AP foreign language, AP Euro, AP Art History, etc. as well as Honors Humanities, Social science, and Art classes (at least 2 more from the above subjects).

For UHouston, make sure to apply as soon as the app opens and to Honors.
If you’re struggling in Math, not sure TAMU is the best choice.
Run the Net Price Calculator on Trinity, Southwestern, TCU, Hendrix, UNM, Texas State.

the regular pre calc is just the grade level class for it except its in the summer for those who want to skip it during the school year. For senior year I’m definitely taking
Dual Enrollment english lll
Ap econ and Ap gov
and if i take your suggestion it’ll be Ap APES and stats.
There is no ap art history or honors humanities but i did take AP psych this year which is a social science, my art credit is just two years of theater. Theres only one ap lit class but i took lang instead this year.

Regular precalc compressed into a summer course for accelerated students might be too much - what does your teacher think?

@rb07 What are your ACT and SAT scores?
‘Prelaw’ isn’t a major, so what will you be applying for?
Unless you have amazing test scores, and very high rank, Rice and A&M will be hard reaches, UH should be a safety tho. Agree with @MYOS1634 about applying early for UH Honors.
