McGill Acceptance Decisions Class 2023 (Entering 2019)

I’ve been on further review required since I submitted my application, and I’ve even uploaded my mid-year report. Do they usually email if they require further documentation?

@alisaxnosova congratulations! Was ur predicted of 38 and midyear of 34 out of 42 or 45?

@drmcmuffin You should try calling ServicePoint (Admissions) and have them take a look to make sure everything is in order (all of your documents were received properly). When my S17 was applying they were helpful in that way with him to give him assurance they have everything and it is just a matter of time until someone reviews the application. Good luck!

@SwimmingDad thank you! I’ve actually emailed servicepoint about this, and they described it as the case being such: “This status indicates that your file has been reviewed by our Admissions Team but your final decision has been delayed.” - this was strange since I my status was changed to FRR the moment I first submitted my documents, but I assume any changes on Minerva will be made once someone physically reviews my application.

I have been on further review since I submitted my supplementary document. I submitted my application in mid December and uploaded the supplementary document in mid January. When will my decision come out?

Same… still waiting!

I just registered for the newly admitted students Campus-Connect on April 5. Excited to visit the campus ! Is anyone else looking at going to an event like this?

@danielz233 hey im in the same situation and I got an email back yesterday about that. they told me that my files are complete and I just have to wait for the decisions to come haha i have no idea why some people are still on FRR and some are getting decisions in two days

My experience with McGill is (at least for the U.S.) the process is the process. If you are way above the minima then answers come quickly. The closer you are the longer it takes. Hang in there!

When McGill says “maintain level of academic achievement” how “maintained” does it actually have to be? I’ve heard with most American schools I’ve gotten into that as long as your average doesn’t drop more than 2 letters you’re ok. What is it like for McGill? If I got A’s my first semester, are B’s going to get my offer rescinded?

@greenfinger

McGill’s Understanding Admission Terminology page elaborates on this phrase a bit by saying: “You are expected to maintain a level of academic performance similar to what you were achieving at the time of admission. While there is no fixed grade standing or percentage that you must attain in your final examinations, you are expected to continue to strive for excellent results. If grades fall significantly or should you fail a course or courses, you will likely be called upon to explain the circumstances. Without a reasonable explanation for the change, you may be at risk of losing your offer.”

I think that if you get 1 or 2 Bs in your next semester, you should be okay. But if you drop from an all A to an all B student in just one semester, then it makes sense that the university would call upon you to explain this. Because a straight-A student to an all B student is a pretty significant drop.

Overall, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. It’s just to make sure you don’t slack and give up on academics after being accepted to a college. And if something severe does happen which causes your grades to drop, which can happen sometimes in bad circumstances, you’re able to explain why it happened and what was going on!

A rule of thumb at all schools is no D’s, no F’s and no felony convictions.

@umassbound

I got my results on 2/14 (a week after I submitted my 1st semester grades)

I got Admitted Pending Final Results for Arts (which I somewhat expected)
I got Reviewed - Decision Pending for Desautels, which I heard is kind of like getting differed in the US, I am anxiously waiting rn

can anyone explain the winter break/ break system at McGill? How long are the breaks and when are they?

@surferg127
https://www.mcgill.ca/study/2018-2019/faculties/continuing/information/scs_key_dates
Christmas/New Year’s break begins whenever your exams are done and ends when classes begin on the 7th so technically you could have anywhere from a couple weeks to a month. See the bottom for reading week.

Admitted to Faculty of Arts!!
US High School
GPA unweighted out of 100: 94
ACT: 32
APs: World History (4), APUSH (5), Biology (5), Art History (5), Microeconomics, English Literature and everything else was honors

My daughter is accepted to McGill (Faculty of Arts) and Northeastern Honors. She’s visiting both (for the second time) before making a decision. Anyone have any thoughts on which is best in terms of life style, community, faculty mentorship? I think McGill wins for academics, but Northeastern seems to have made great strides recently and I can definitely see her thriving there.

@Shrink66 Neither Northeastern nor McGill offer a “traditional college experience” Northeastern is a residential campus with on campus housing guaranteed for all years, although after sophomore year half the students live off campus in the Fenway and Mission Hill neighborhoods. McGill provides on campus housing only for first year students. After that all students live off campus mostly in the Milton/Parc Ghetto or the Plateau neighborhoods. Athletics and Greek life exist at both schools but are not major parts of campus life at either school. Weather at both schools may be a consideration depending on where you are from. Montreal is colder and snowier than Boston although after the winter of 2015 (110" of snow here) there are no guarantees. Boston and Montreal are both fascinating cities fro a student to live in but in different ways.

At McGill students are expected to be independent and self motivated. While support is available it is up to the student to seek it out. Northeastern, while there is little “hand holding”, would have more support staff and offer outreach to students in some areas, most notably career planning.

The Northeastern experience is built around experiential learning and coop. There is a strong professional and pre-professional campus culture, even in the humanities and social sciences. In the Arts McGill would be the more “artsy” school. What is your daughter’s major?

Academics at McGill are rigorous and there are no easy A’s. Northeastern would be challenging but less demanding in my opinion. Northeastern is not known for its humanities programs however.

As for faculty mentorship Northeastern would have smaller classes and the faculty are likely more available. At McGill after first year classes get smaller but the student still has to take the initiative in developing relationships with the faculty.

BTW I am a Northeastern alumnus and my older son is a McGill alumnus so I am familiar with both schools. @SwimmingDad and @ShrimpBurrito are parents of current students and you can read their comments in the above linked threads.

@TomSrOfBoston This is so helpful! I should add that she will be in the Engineering program at Northeastern, but not at McGill because she took the Math 2 and US Hist subject tests but didn’t take the physics subject test, which McGill requires. Still, she is an artsy, sporty engineer who dreams of designing the perfect hockey blade! My concern re: McGill is the independence required. :slight_smile: We are all excited about the admitted students’ event at NEU on 3/16. McGill’s is on 4/5 I think. (she is deferred from UPenn, so there’s also that small possibility.)

I will check out the other parents’ comments that you recommended.

Thanks so much!

@Shrink66 I think @TomSrOfBoston did a nice job with his write up and I agree with his views. The reality is both schools are great schools and a bit of it comes down to fit. My son just really liked the feel of McGill and it’s very international nature. And as much as this Bostonian loves Boston…McGill is probably a better city in which to be a student. Why? It’s just so much less expensive. For less than $600 US my son has a beautiful apartment in a great neighborhood within walking distance to campus. That just doesn’t happen anymore in Boston.

Good luck with the admitted student events…and good luck with Penn.
