My D was admitted to McGill Faculty of Arts and was hoping to major in music. Seems there’s a lot of confusion right now about what will be available to students in Faculty of Arts. I’ve been told major has been eliminated, but some minors are still available. Yet I’ve been bounced around and no one can give us information. We need to know what types of classes she will have access to in order to make a decision.
Deciding between McGill, Wesleyan and still waiting on a couple more responses.
Is there a reason she didn’t apply for the BM at Schulich? Does she want a performance degree or more of a liberal arts major in music? Does she have other academic interests?
The website still has both major and minor in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Bachelor of Arts in Music ( Faculty of Arts) | Music - McGill University Music classes for the BA are taken at Schulich. It is concerning if you are hearing the major is being eliminated but it is still on the website. It does seem possible: humanities courses are being cut everywhere and perhaps most students want Schulich. I hope you can find out!!!
On this forum, we often caution that it is a good idea to check out whether schools with BM programs prioritize those students in terms of teachers, performances and other resources and opportunities, and if so, then it is wise to avoid those schools even if known to be “good for music.” I have no idea if this is true for McGill.
Wesleyan is a progressive music BA and has always had a lot of courses in world music. Is she interested in that? Has she compared the curricula of the two schools so far?
McGill had an announcement up on the website about a month ago and then it was taken down. I’ve spoken and written to several people there and have yet to get info on what will be available as a music minor. My D did not apply to Schulich as she also wants to study sociology.
Hard to compare to other schools when McGill website is not updated. Most of the courses listed say they were not even offered this semester.
I was just wondering if anyone else in this forum has info
@Chardonne have you contacted Schulich admissions as well, since the courses in the music minor would be given there? I assume you have but just asking.
Maybe McGill doesn’t know yet! There might be some controversy or curricular and faculty changes or meetings going on so they cannot yet give you an answer. Do you know?
Yes have written to them and I’m getting different answers from each person. It’s very frustrating
My daughter was admitted for the BM faculty program. It is a violin concentration - basically the same as performance but has the opportunity to take other classes in music or outside of music.
