McGill Class of 2009

Ya… how many of you are actually deciding to take a french course while studying at McGill… i would like to but I do not know if I have any room

i am pretty good at french (or i think i am anyway)

i definately want to become fluent in french b4 i leave montreal…so i will defintely take a french course

same here…I’ll squeeze it in somehow. Although for management there’s tons of leaway in first year.

I am definitely coming to McGill  And I probably will take french as well!

i’m definitly taking french courses.

as for

I’m definitely tutoring hopeless internationals in French
Who do you guys think would give out the best rates?
The Americans? The Ontarians (if that’s how they’re called…)? The Chinese?
I’m looking forward to finally getting something back from those god-awful CNED French grammar courses (talk about dry…).

well, you’re definately right about the internationals being somewhat hopeless. It’s a whole new language and they’re probably most desperate to learn some french, if at all. Ontario kids all learned french in gr.9 so they’ve got something, and many americans have some french under their belt too. So the more desperate, the more they’ll pay. However, you have to find the wealthier ones because international students are already paying a hell of a lot to go to school in montreal.

So, mucho dinero to be made in tutoring, hopefully…
Though I doubt it beats what I can get by waitering in Montreal (serving alcohol = gold nuggets for tips)
Gonna try and get some waitering experience over the summer. That’ll give me the resum

actually international kids will be paying almost nothing in mcgill compared to what they would have paid in the UK or USA…$25k as opposed to $50k

I have been studying French since 6th grade. I wouldn’t want to stop now.

yea, it would be a waste to stop the French now. I got a bartending job for the summer, so I’m hoping that they’ll give me an alcohol thingie license too. You have to work really late hours though. It’d be fun, but I’m kinda worried that it would interfere with me getting up for class the next day and being awake. There are jobs on campus, but I think most are administrative stuff and they pay about 8-11 bucks an hour. But I think if you work on campus they don’t want you to work more than 15 hours a week, so they really limit how much money you can make.

Im going to McGill too. I’ve been taking French for a while, but hopefully I will able to speak fluently eventually. I’m extremely excited for August!

amen dkm!!

well its kinda odd among all u french speakers…
i dont speak french at all… but definitely planning to take some classes…

but im quite sure ill do fine without french…as i wont be the only one who doesnt know it…

also i did a bit of research on OFF CAMPUS housing… and have decided to opt for that instead of new rez…
off campus is around 3000 per year… so im saving 7k… which ill probably use for my grad school financing in US, hopefully…

and its not like off campus is bad quality housing… hearing from ppl who are living there… Mcgill ‘gheto’ has quite decent apartments at very affordable prices…

actually i think most international students would know some or pretty good french…espcially if they go to an international school where you are pretty much forced to learn english and french from primary school (well i certainly was anyway in the 4 schools i been to. out of the 4…3 of them were in non-francophone countries)

its probably only the americans (who have studied spanish as their seconf lanague) how wouldnt know any french .

i would say the majority of people in quebec (non-quebec) would be able to speak atleast some french

but then again everyone speaks english…so its no big deal

you would save a lot of money if you got off campus housing instead of new rez, but there are other residences there that aren’t that bad. I visited the BMH residences and although there aren’t too many washrooms, it’s comfortable. Everyone living in rez will be a freshman, so it’s a good opportunity to bond with your peers. It’s still a lot more than $3k a year, but the experience is worth it. Chances are, you’re never going to be staying in a traditional dorm again. Besides $3k a year for off campus housing probably doesn’t include food. Assuming rent’s about $400 a month, you’re still going to need at least $200 for food.

well if your a big eater or not that would highly depend on how much food you spend a month… and the amount of time you have to cook especially in your first year will be low so you will also have a really bad diet…

who can pass by the experience of living in a traditional style rez whether it be upper rez, new rez or douglas… your getting a great meal plan and hopefully meet the friends of a lifetime… it is also conveniently located close to campus and i think its still the better idea even after all the money that you are paying…

i was planning to go to douglas… but when my parents found out new rez is about 2000$ more along with a 7 day meal plan, better cafeteria, my own bathroom and bigger room… they believe its worth it

yeah i agree with n-man…staying in your own accomodation would be too much of a hassle in your first year, which is even more of a burden if your new to the area and don’t know the place well…i think spendin a year in rez will get you climatized to the area well enough to know your own special areas to get stuff etc. and then move into an apartment with friends which will definately save costs in the long run.

im staying in mcgill rez for the first year, hopefully new rez or douglas. having your own apartment does sound very intriguing, especially since the lease is for the entire year…which means that i will not be coming home in the summer. but im looking forward to meeting kids in rez and then branching off on my own or with roommates.

yeah about the lease…i checked up and all undergrad rez’s are 8 months…in my opinion…that sucks! what do we do after that? go home?
