Thank you, everyone, for sharing your insight and personal experiences about McGill. Our daughter received her acceptance four days ago to the BCom Desautels program and we are very excited. We think it’s a wonderful fit for our kiddo. I’m trying to learn all the details to prepare for this next step (first and only kid now heading to college), so it’s been great learning from everyone else!
My only child is also going to McGill. There is a US McGill Moms or Paren Facebook page that I would like to explore… Probably sign up for support or ask questions/gain insights from those whose kids are currently at McGill. If you would like us to connect, you can send me a message. i’m both excited and nervous about this next phase in my child’s life.
You are very kind, thank you I’m beginning to read through past McGill threads to educate myself more and, like you, our family is equally excited and nervous about this next phase! Lots of great info and insight from other parents here. I admit yesterday my wife and I got too excited as we bought snow boots for our kid for the winters there.
Our daughter was accepted to McGill (Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science). She submitted her mid-year grades on 12/18. She’s never seen McGill, but we think it could be a great fit! She’s leaning towards St. Andrews in Scotland, but hope she’ll be open to McGill since it’s a bit closer. (We are from Colorado)
Congratulations! Oh, she’ll love it there! We visited McGill when my D was a sophomore. We came back for a guided tour in April of last year and she decided it’s going to be her top school. She basically planned her senior curriculum based on McGill’s prereqs for Sciences. She also likes U of Toronto but we’re closer to McGill. Montreal is lovely! My D doesn’t speak French but she said she’ll try her best to learn the language.
Son accepted today Interfaculty B Arts and Science- submitted in November
1570, 4.7 GPA unweighted, 7 5s and 1 4 on APs
Love Montreal but now I need to learn a lot more about going to school internationally!
Congratulations to your daughter! My daughter also has been accepted to St. Andrews (International Relations) and McGill (Faculty of Arts & Faculty of Science)(her top 2 choices). Now trying to decide!! We’re in Pennsylvania; she’s visited both and has loved both (despite the difference in locations). Leaning towards St. Andrews as well…Good luck with the decision!!
Oh, I love to hear this! Congratulations to your daughter as well. My daughter and my husband are visiting St. Andrews in March. She visited two summers ago, but we’d like her to experience a small taste of the Scotland weather in the spring. Being from Colorado we are not used to gray skies! Funny coincidence, our daughter’s good friend is a first year at St. Andrews and is also from PA! It really is an amazing place.
Son was accepted last week to Desautels Faculty Management (Commerce) and Faculty of Arts.
Southeast US (Atlanta), public school, 3.8/4.39 GPA (uw/w), 13 APs, 1510 SAT, NMSF.
Accepted to UT-Mississauga and waiting to hear from UT-SG.
Anyone have any insights on student life at McGill vs UT-SG? I’ve read that UT is less of a collegiate feel as many students live off-campus. And that UT’s grading is extremely harsh. Recruiters and grad schools may understand UT’s grading when evaluating applicant’s scores but your average employer may not recognize the difference in UT’s grading vs other schools.
Also, any thoughts on the new French requirements imposed by the Quebec government? It doesn’t impact the entering class of 2024 but it goes into effect for the class of 2025. I agree with McGill’s argument that this new requirement will hurt the reputation of the school as i) they will have a much smaller applicant pool (and less geographically diverse) and ii) students will have to spend the equivalent of an entire semester just learning French.
Has anyone done more than one application (meaning in order to apply to a 3rd and/or 4th faculty)? I have a question if so: Did you mark “yes” or “no” to the question “Have you applied to McGill in the past?” (We’re wondering if that would include this cycle—or just years past. We don’t want the response we put to be confused with having filed an application for a year prior to this one…)
that asks about applying in PAST admission cycles, not the current one.
UT Mississauga UT Scarborough are suburban mostly commuter campuses. Unlike the St. George campus students do not live in the surrounding neighborhoods after leaving campus residence, Also, Scarborough is suburban but nit a very nice area.
I have always though that McGill should have some French requirement for graduation, even if it were just a few language courses. But the government’s plan is excessive.
i imagine that in the future if a US or overseas applicant has studied French in high school, that would give them an admissions advantage, even if their GPA isn’t quite at the cutoff.
The plan is a little much!
As a girl from Quebec, I think most non French speakers attending university in the province should have to take a couple of French classes! Five is too many!
Most Quebecers are unhappy with this new law and the CAQ (political party in power) is very unpopular so, once they are gone I think things will change back. The new tuition and the language requirement will hurt not only McGill, Concordia and Bishop but Montreal and the whole province!
