Science is more selective than Arts. Surprising that he would be accepted to Science first.
Not doubting you, but we were told on our tour a few weeks ago that transfers into Arts are extremely difficultāthat they will only accept as many transfers into Arts as the number of students who leave, and it can be as few as single digits in a given year.
Things may have changed but in the past, it was difficult to transfer to a more selective faculty (Desautels is almost impossible to transfer into) but easier to transfer into a less selective faculty.
We did not hear this at our tour (or missed it). But it does seem unrealistic that of over 7000 students total in Arts the attrition would be less than 0.5% per year (to have only single digit departures). I have heard informally that transferring in and out of faculties is generally straightforward, requiring mostly that you meet the minimum GPA of that faculty.
But to transfer to Desautels or Engineering requires a 4.0 or 3.9! Although transfer to Arts would be easier.
We went on a tour on Wednesday morning. It was actually snowing! We asked about this as my DS has been accepted to the Faculty of Science and wants the Faculty of Arts. We were told by the tour guide that it is not easy to transfer to the Faculty of Arts. You have to compete against others and are treated as a transfer student. If you look on their website it states that they accept a limited number of transfers. So I am confused about this. When he called again last week about his application to the Faculty of Arts they said he should hear something soon.
Hello! Iām doing the IB diploma and I was predicted a 40/45 and got accepted in McGill. The only thing they required for me to keep my place was to āmaintain academic standardā. Does that mean that I have to get a 40 on my finals? Thatās very hard to do though⦠Or do you think they will be okay with getting 3 points less? If anyone knows please reach out!
It probably just means maintain the standard above their admissions cutoff point.
Toured McGill and my student really liked it. Only thing that I didnāt like is seeing the encampment on front lawn as we were coming in. Does anyone know how tense it is on campus? Some US schools with similar issues are quite tense with some schools canceling in-person classes and canceling graduation.
If you read beyond the ālimited number of transfersā you will also see it say the following pasted below. A min of 3.0 GPA OR even a GPA less than 3.0 but all course grades above a B.
Eligibility requirements for an inter-faculty transfer to the BA degree
- You are a McGill student currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program offered in a different Faculty (including the BA&Sci degree) and will not be graduating from that degree; or
- You are not currently enrolled but have not graduated from McGill or another university and have simply been absent from McGill.
Additional minimum eligibility requirements:
- At the time of review of your application:
- You must have a CGPA of 3.00 or greater in your current faculty, including your current winter term; or
- Your CGPA is below 3.00 in your current faculty after your current winter term, but you have completed a minimum of 12 credits of Arts courses with grades of B or better (ALL 12 credits must be at B level or better, this is NOT calculated as an average of all Arts grades)
- Note 1: Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.
- Note 2: Arts courses are courses offered/administered by the Faculty of Arts.
Our 2 kids at McGill say it is business as usual! So far, there has been no violence. Per the CBC, police spent the night on campus last night and concluded there was nothing illegal. There was a court injonction this afternoon but I have not heard anything yet. No missed classes as they finished a couple of weeks ago and no missed finals (even protesters left encampment to take tests)!
Semesters is over today so some kids will be going home!
Thank you
Class of 2028. NYC top public high school that accepts 3% based on entrance exam, 11 APs, 94 average (3.85 unweighted), 1580 SAT (780 verbal/800 math).
Kid was admitted within a week for McGill BA but wanted BSc. AP scores in tenth and eleventh grade for humanities all fours and fives and humanities grades higher than STEM, all mid to high As.
Took AP chem sophomore year without intro chemistry and had a B. Honors algebra 2 also B same year post pandemic. Huge step up in difficulty that year! Rest of science math grades were A- plus apart from AP stats had a B+. McGill requested senior mid year grades all notably higher as STEM grades had upward trend. Finally accepted to BSc third week of April for life sciences.
Iāll comment that a classmate with substantially easier STEM classes with all As (no AP science, a bit of honors math) ⦠mine took every AP science and some honors math, AP stats, AP calc etc got in much earlier!!! Seemed unfair like they werenāt assessing rigor but ultimately our kid was accepted.
She did not get into any top 20 US schools even though extremely well rounded and great essays etc. Waitlisted to Cornell (10% of her class going there) Seemed extremely unfair with so many kids test optional. Greater than $30k merit to top 30/top 50 schools but McGill is cheaper as dual citizen.
Going to McGill for life sciences. Super stressful admissions cycleā¦.dont ever want to go through this again!!!
Congrats on getting through it and getting a great outcome!
Hi. First time on CC. Would it be better to submit AP exam results with your initial application, if they depend on the result for a solid admit? Seems risky.
Hello, my D is the process of applying to McGill from the US. We toured the school last April and the guide suggested to apply as early as possible. You mentioned your D got her decision before entering her midterm grades. Iām confused on how to report current grades. Did your D report them āIn Progressā?
I have a question similar question. S just decided to apply. It says to report end-of-first-term grades, not grades in progress, but S will only have an end-of-quarter before the deadline. The final semester grades will not be available until mid-February. What should we do?
Apparently some people got an offer before entering midterm grades. Iām still confused how to report 10th and 11th grades, as the application portal doesnāt yet have a that possibility.
I called and that seems impossible. I talked to Service Point yesterday. For US applicants you will only be able to self report that information beginning in the middle of November. This is the information I received. I also asked about SAT superscore and they said no they do not. Only one composite score (but you can submit ANOTHER full test if it is better). My daughter meets the required threshold for both science and arts. She will apply to both colleges. He said if it is at the threshold of 50% last year, then it will NOT hurt the application to submit. In other words, if you meet it, submit it. And November is the start of self reported grades (mid November evidently).
Please Iām having problem creating a McGill application account, can anyone put me through
