At the start of the process, what schools might I be overlooking for a student who is interested in MechE + Aeronautical Engineering as a minor/ concentration, desire for hands-on learning and industry projects, ideally mid-size private university, ideally in a progressive on-campus and off-campus community, non-rural setting?
There are plenty of options with a sub 10% admit rate, but looking to fill out the list with non-reach schools that will be great places to thrive.
Cal Poly, although not private, would fit the bill. Your student could do ME with extra fluids (that’s what my son did), or they could do full AE, either Astro or Aero. It’s a little reachy though.
UAH is surrounded by industry as is Florida Tech - but they miss the progressive off campus - and likely on campus part. A lot of aero is in the south - although there’s some in Colorado (School of MInes, again public) has MechE with an Aero Minor - don’t know if the school is progressive but the area is - but it’s a public, etc.
Engineering seems to develop well with public schools.
WPI might be another to look at private school wise - I don’t know if the school is progressive but the area is. Illinois Tech might be another.
Good luck.
