Mel Gibson Raw

Dueling experts, I guess, because a guy on GMA said the tapes had been tampered with. Doesn’t invalidate them, IMO.

And she made not have hand-delievered them to radaronline but it was done with her knowledge, IMO.

I’m not sure I understand the tendency to dump on this woman for making the tapes public. I think this feeling would make sense if Gibson was a private person. But he’s a guy who makes his living in the public eye, and whose celebrity status provides him with access and trust on a level most of us can’t even imagine. I think making it crystal clear what kind of person he is was a public service. I’m reminded of Pride and Prejudice, where Elizabeth and Jane debate whether to make Wickham’s past misdeeds known to their circle and decide not to for several reasons. They come to regret this decision when Wickham abducts their sister.

No woman in her right mind will go near Mel Gibson with a ten-foot pole now. Isn’t that a good thing?

Imagine this scenario. Turns out the tapes are doctored, she’s in cahoots with her dentist and a private investigator to destroy Gibson and get lots of money. He’s already a nut with a poor reputation. What could be easier?

I don’t really think that, but stranger things have happened.

IMO, being a public figure doesn’t justify public release of the tapes. They are nasty, full of foul language and violent threats-I’m sure lots of young kids are listening online. Again, where do you draw the line? Would you want to listen if he was actually beating her? How about if he almost killed her? Sick stuff. Again, we ALL know the guy is crazy and sick. We didn’t need the tapes to prove that. For goodness sake, we’re not talking about Tom Hanks here…

About the audio–I’m not a forensic expert, but I am an audio engineer. Clearly Oksana’s voice is being recorded by a high-quality microphone that is close to her mouth. It sounds more or less like a professional voiceover. There’s also some reverb on it, which is probably artificial. It’s possible that it’s natural room ambience being picked up by the mic, but it doesn’t sound that way to my ear.

Even if all of the above is correct, though, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Oksana’s voice was added later. It would depend on the recording system she was using.

You are kidding, aren’t you? OJ Simpson did not seem to have any trouble finding girlfriends after his trial.

And one would have thought that the fact that Gibson was married with seven kids and had a reputation as an abusive alcoholic would have kept women away from him, too.

True. Being a public figure doesn’t mean that laws don’t apply to you. Either breaking them or being protected by them.

Gibson will have NO PROBLEM attracting women in the future, even if he ends up in jail. A jail sentence for domestic violence wouldn’t be long for a celebrity someone like Mad Mel anyway. The charge likely would be watered down with the help of a high-priced attorney, if there was no severe injury. Plus, he wouldn’t be on trial for having non-standard Christian beliefs or for cursing and yelling. And…we all have read of women who supposedly fall in love with a man presently incarcerated. Didn’t one of the Menendez brothers marry? The Menendez brothers got life sentences, didn’t they?

So- toneranger- are you upset that Oksana released them or that radaronline released them? I do see a concern with the uncensored editions being played where and when small children can hear them. However, I don’t think Oksana owes Mel any courtesy whatsoever when he issues death threats.

And I don’t necessarily think the world knows that Mel is as nasty and sick as he is. A lot of people would give him a pass for drunken outbursts- far less will give him a pass for this type of behavior, where he is clearly not drunk while spewing.

I don’t think I’ve dumped on her but simply pointed out that she’s waging a PR campaign in addition to trying to protect herself. I never said I thought that was a mistake. I simply don’t buy that this is the only way she could have gone about getting out from under his control, if that’s what she wanted. Remember what a jerk he was years ago during his arrest? No love lost between he and the cops.

And, yes, I imagine Mel will still have no problem finding a woman.

Nightchef, could a recording that was that clear (with her voice) be made if the microphone was hidden or out of sight? That’s what I keep wondering. How hidden could it have been to get that clear a quality of recording? It also seems odd to me that she would be so calm.

If her lawyers released it, it had to be with her permission. If they released it without her permission, they should be disbarred. If the police released it without her permission, that will come out, just as it did when someone in LAPD released the photos of Rhianna after she was assaulted by Chris Brown. I think Oksana had every right to protect herself and to record him and that it would have been smart to have given those tapes to people who had real authority and recourse. But letting the public get them – and I have difficulty believing that she wasn’t complicit on some level with that – would seem to me to be a dangerous move, like waving a red flag in front of a raging bull. In all likelihood, she will have to communicate with him for another 18 years, regardless of whether charges are filed or if there are restraining orders. I’m not sure that releasing the tapes serves her long-term interests well.

As for his rapid breathing, I had a different take on it. He’s not a spring chicken, a rage like that is physically demanding and I wondered if the guy was going to give himself a heart attack.

Maybe I’m confused. I’ve been assuming that this was a telephone conversation, and so there would be no need to hide the microphone. Was it supposedly face to face?

^ yes, it was a telephone conversation, and she had access to professional microphones, and familiar with them as a singer.
The conflicting ABC and NBC audio expert testimony is interesting.

Well, another day, another tape-
Mel comes unglued, money issues come up, and he sounds possessed-like a growling animal at one point.
Ugh ------------- he is scary.

^^^ I don’t know how to edit that link —it’s not pretty- sorry

I have to wonder if he’s not mentally ill-bipolar, personality disorder or something of that nature. It doesn’t excuse his behavior, but it might explain it to a degree.

Or, he just might be a selfish, angry, insensitive jerk.

I think I’ll pass on this one. Really, enough is enough. She keeps it up, and she’s going to engender a level of sympthy for him.

Is each tape a different conversation, or is this one long conversation cut into pieces? Anyone know?

It seems as if his lawyers might be preparing to challenge the tapes. What if they’re not exactly what they seem? It’s all disturbing, you know?

Really? I haven’t read or listened to any of these links, nor heard about this anywhere else. Nor do I plan to. But just from the references here, I am having trouble envisioning any level of sympathy for him.

I find this hard to imagine. If you said, “she’s going to lose sympathy for herself,” I could see it and even perhaps agree. But engender sympathy for him? In order for that to happen, there has to be at least some degree of “there but for the grace of God go I.”

A good example is the famous Alec Baldwin tape. Sure, it’s ugly, but I think most of us would be reluctant to have our worst moment with our kids brought out in the open like that. Most of us have been mean to our kids at some point or other–maybe not that mean, but somewhere on the road to it. So for me, and I expect for many of us, that tape evoked a dual response–disgust at Baldwin’s nastiness, but also sympathy for his embarrassment.

But this is not like that. There is no way to parse what I’m hearing as a basically OK person having a very bad day. This is the sound of a lost soul, a guy who desperately needs help but may be beyond it. Who in the world is going to identify with that voice enough to sympathize with its owner? The only chance Gibson has at this point to win any sympathy is if he can prove the tapes are fake.
