Message for all the CAP kids

I for one did not choose CAP. Instead, I chose to attend A&M (sigh). After a semester here, I’ve gotten a 4.0 GPA in Biology and am finishing my transfer applications to UT and various other universities. I didn’t really work that hard to get the GPA, and many of the kids are weird/crazy for this school (no freakin’ idea why). But A&M isn’t really all that bad…if you LOVE traditions and saying howdy rofl; Choosing A&M over the CAP schools was a risky choice, because I was afraid of not getting a high enough GPA to transfer. In the end though, it was very good experience for me to learn from my mistakes (by not being in top 10%) and pay for my mistakes by going to A&M. I will be transferring out of A&M (for sure) after this upcoming semester and have learned a great a deal from my errors. Overall, most would not choose A&M if they really wanted UT, because going the CAP route is the surest way to guarantee one’s self at UT.

I’ll add to this… the CAP program is a GREAT decision, specially for people worried about making friends at other schools and such. The CAP program allows you to grow a network and bond with people that are going through the same thing you are. You’ll work hard for your grades, study, take some classes, eat, and transfer together. Once you’re ready for UT, you’ll have some people you know you want to room with and a great group of friends so you wont feel alone and so small once you’re at UT. The people you meet during your CAP year will become some of your best friends, if not, you’ll branch out from them.
The CAP program is such a fantastic choice, if you get it, TAKE IT.

I agree that CAP can be a very good choice if your plans include transferring to UT. If you go to another non-CAP school, you will not be vested in it as your focus is leaving. With CAP, you are with similarly minded students working toward a common goal. My child has made new friends, solidified old friendships and has enjoyed the amazing rec center at UTSA. The staff there has been very helpful and caring.

I have applied to UT austin but I’m pretty sure I will get CAPPED so I am wondering if it’s a good Idea to go to UTSA as my CAP school, or should I just attend TECH, UH, or PVAMU. I want to major in chemical engineering. I’m really split right now and i need some advice.

UTSA has a strong chemical engineering program (and VERY strong biochem dept.). Here is an article about some recent student projects: [Medical tech start-up AidPro sweeps UTSA new-business competition](<a href=“404 - PAGE NOT FOUND | UTSA”>Medical tech start-up AidPro sweeps UTSA new-business competition)
Also, the UT System Board of Regents is considering merging the UT Health Science Center of San Antonio with UTSA (they’ll announce the decision this summer), so there may be some neat opportunities.

If you plan to apply for financial aid, have the FAFSA data sent directly to all the schools you are considering. You may even want to apply directly (for admissions and scholarships) to the CAP schools you are considering -it may allow you to qualify for $$ with deadlines before the CAP announcement.

The CAP program is amazing if you ask me. Right now I am at UTSA completing it and barring a huge mess up this semester (<2.45 GPA or 1 D) I will be In Austin. Like most people have said, before doing this, make sure UT is where you really want to be. For me, I looked around at other schools and realized that not only was Austin where I wanted to be, but it would also open up doors and give me the best degree out of the schools I was considering.

One thing I would suggest, like the OP did, is to make the most out of your time at the sister school you attend. I have many friends who are in CAP and every weekend they go home, or up to Austin. They always complain about UTSA and act like they are so much better then the non-CAP students here. DON’T DO THIS! just because you are in the CAP program, does not make you any better than any of the other students at that sister school. Just enjoy the time you have there and you will realize it is not that bad, and there are plenty of great people who are not CAP. I have actually met plenty of students who used to be CAP but they decided to stay even though they had the grades to go to Austin. UT is a great school no doubt, but you just may find that their sister school was just what you were looking for so don’t shut yourself off to that possibility.

When I look at UTSA’s Majors I dont see anything about chemical engineering… this decision is really hard for me but if I knew UTSA had chemistry major I could at least be comfortable knowing that i could just graduate from there. I’ve also been accepted to Texas tech and U of H but I want some advise on what to do…

OP: thanks for the post. i used to think of CAP as the “one yr rejects”. shame on me, i know.

i just recently found out i was capped. only now, i think its a blessing in disguise. the only thing is my friend got in- so it would’ve been nice if we’d gone together. [and no. no hard feelings against her. she worked harder than me, and her writing skills are absolutely amazing. so touche. she deserved it. im just beating myself up cause i slacked off last year… and i know im paying for it]

that said, ive heard alot of ppl who were friends in high school end up breaking up in college/never talk to each other again. and i def. dont want that to happen.

anyone choose CAP over trinity university by any chance? care to share why?

im considering capping at UT Arlington cause i was accepted there in the major of my choice already

thanks. =D

i think i am going to pass on the CAP, it you were guaranteed to get in business or engineering it would be a different story, but your not so

pierre: u made ur decision pretty quick… im at crossroads atm.

probably one of the biggest decisions im going to have to make in my life.

oh brother.

bumble i am having second thoughts, if i go through wit CAP i will probably have to change my majors.

i cant see my self not doing business, but

@sonyema if your for sure you wanna go to UT , i say do the CAP i dont think it will make a big difference what school you CAP at. but you have to remember that it will probably be hard to go though CAP and major in Chemical Engineering at UT

I know someone who CAP’d at UTSA and is a ChemE major at UT now. It isn’t that hard to pull a good GPA at UTSA and apply to your major at UT.

maybe not but for Business i hear it is, i think its safer to just go to another good business school and attempt to transfer, that way if i dont get in i will still be at a good business school

I had a 1790 on the SAT and I got CAP’d. Now I am thinking of taking the CAP but I’m not sure of where to go for it. I have UTPA and UTSA as options, or I could also go to TSU-San Marcos and just transfer. Idk ohw easy it is to transfer though. I live 15 minutes away from UTPA though, so I could commute and everything.

Also, does anybody know how easy it is to get a 3.2 GPA at both of these UT-affiliated schools? What about the 30 semester credit hours? How much is that? I’m really confused.

Honestly, as long as you apply yourself you will easily get a 3.2 at UTSA. 30 hours is not too bad either.

Also, Pierre, you would not be automatically accepted to engineering or business by getting into Austin as a freshmen either.

@longhorndan yea i know

on the site they dont recommend you do CAP if you are trying to do Business or Engineering, so i am definitely passing, but as for people doing othe majors then CAP is the way to go

Where did it say that on their site? just wondering, not trying to bust your balls.

Phaser -Most college classes are for 3 credits. 30 semester hours is 2 semesters of 5 classes each. To save $$$$, I’d seriously consider going to UTPA and living at home. Housing in Austin is very expensive, so save while you can!

Wherever you choose to go, apply directly to the school as a regular admit and submit your FAFSA ASAP. Even if you turn in the CAP contract, first being admitted as a regular student may increase your financial aid eligibility.

“If you will be happy at UT Austin only if you’re admitted to one of our most competitive majors, then you should consider attending a college or university where your pathway to your desired major is more certain.”

i didnt use their exact words but they pretty much said it

Thank you LonghornDan and zlc.
Would it be easier to get a higher GPA at UTSA or UTPA though? I am goign to do the CAp program. Please wish me luck:)
