Message for all the CAP kids

@phaser whats your major

It is hard to say as I have only gone to UTSA and know nothing of UTPA. I would just suggest that wherever you go, pay close attention to the professors you get. This can make a huge difference in your GPA. I had a few professors last semester who were brutal. I had to study insane amounts to pull an A. This semester I choose teachers who were historically easier and am having a less stressful and much more enjoyable semester (although I feel like I am learning less :/).

Definitely spend a good amount of time researching the courses and professors if you participate in CAPs. DO NOT JUST PICK YOUR CLASSES BY SCHEDULE. This is critical. It is possible to get into UT and into the major of your choice, but you will really have to apply yourself. It is not that difficult to get the 3.2 minimum needed, but for business you will need to be well over a 3.5. You probably can’t run home or to Austin every weekend. (What we did not know is that any dual credit class you took in HS will be counted in your GPA, so take that into account. Not AP classes, just dual credit.)

I found out yesterday that I was CAPd, and I’m about 90% sure that I will be following through with it at UTSA. One of my biggest worries is that I will get UTSA, meet a whole bunch of friends and then when I go to Austin I’m not going to know anyone, and going to have to live on campus my sophomore year because I don’t know anyone in Austin to share an apartment with.

Ultimately, you always hear that everyone makes their college friends during their freshman year. I’m worried that I’m going to have to leave all of mine behind and not know anyone at Austin once I get there.

“What major do you want to pursue?”

Students who successfully complete the CAP requirements during their freshman year are guaranteed admission to the School of Undergraduate Studies, the College of Liberal Arts or the College of Natural Sciences. However, many CAP students are interested in applying to other majors at UT Austin, like Business, Engineering and Communication.

The UT System institution you select for your freshman year will provide courses that will transfer as part of the university’s core curriculum, but they may not all serve as prerequisite courses for some majors at UT Austin. The participating CAP universities cannot guarantee that the courses you take as a freshman will help you to prepare for transfer into the McCombs School of Business, for example.

CAP students can ask to be considered in the transfer applicant pool for any major without jeopardizing their automatic admission to Undergraduate Studies, Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences. Admission to some majors outside of these three schools/colleges is highly competitive. If you will be happy at UT Austin only if you’re admitted to one of our most competitive majors, then you should consider attending a college or university where your pathway to your desired major is more certain."

=-=-=-=-

Don’t worry too much about making friends. A lot of CAP people arrive new as sophomores, and there are other new transfer students, and there are 8000 new freshmen every fall. You will probably find it easiest to make friends with people who are new to UT. Every fall, there will be thousands of people at UT who don’t already have a circle of friends and are looking forward to meeting new friends. These are good threads:

UTSA is an easy CAP school. It’s like a cake walk… I really miss it compared to UT. So if you find yourself struggling to make a good GPA at UTSA, times will be rough at UT.

Anyways, UTSA is super fun. If you choose it as your school, you’re going to enjoy it!! Be sure to live in the dorms because you will meet a ton of people that way. There’s a ton of professors that are known to be easy. Right off the bat, I can tell you to go with Startin for TX and American Politics!!!

So, i kinda got screwed over…i applied to UT thinking that i was gonna be eligible for UTSA…turns out they changed the requirements at the last second (after the application deadline), and UTSA doesnt take CAP students that are in the lower half of their high school class anymore (thats me). So now my only options are UTEP, UTPA and UT-Brownsville…anybody else in the same situation?

Definitely agree on the Startin statement. the dudes lectures are bad, but his class is beyond easy.

Also, don’t worry about having no friends when you go to UT. You will meet tons of CAP friends who go with you.

@zepman13579 what about UTA? i accepted my CAP offer just incase i decide to do it, the counselor told me it wont hurt me if i decide not to do the CAP

Hmm, I’m leaning more over UTPA for convenience, but more over UTSA to get a high GPA.

Also, I’m afraid about the math courses. I have 12 credit hours because I took 2 dual classes and got two A’s and two B’s. They better transfer. Also, I’m afraid about the math courses because I don’t know if it is possible to take Calculus and college algebra on the same semester or whatever. I don’t want to agree to CAP and then end up not going to UT because I missed a requirement or something.

@pierrechn:
I am majoring in biology as premed but I want to change to psychology but still do the premed program. I want to be a psychiatrist, but if I don’t get into med school, at least I can still be a psychologist.

yea man CAP seems good but since im doin business i would rather go to another school that way even if i dont get the 3.2 i will still be at a decent business school.

and you can agree to do the cap, and still go somewhere else if you change your mind, the way i see it doin business i have just as good a chance as if i just transfer in from another school

and im pretty sure you can get into MED school if you study and work hard

Just curious, I’d imagine that places like UTSA and UT Dallas fill up quickly because most people would prefer doing their CAP in an urban setting. If I wait until May 1st or something to agree to the CAP agreement could they tell me I have to go to a different school because UTSA is already filled up?

Also, if any of you are in this situation where are you planning to go next year for CAP?

What do you mean by taking Calculus and college-algebra in the same semester? It is definitely not possible. But, during your orientation you will have the opportunity to take a placement test and place up in math (at least I had the opportunity). All you need to get into Austin is college-algebra. Although certain colleges require more.

@longhorndan i thought on the cap thing it said you needed 1 math beyond college algebra and @ninetytwo did you look at UTds requirements do do cap lol

It may be different for this coming year, but this year for me, it is only college algebra. You would not necessarily have to do Calculus, there is pre cal, too.

Does UTD do CAP now? they weren’t a choice for me last year.

So UTSA or UTPA? All my friends are saying “Get out of the valley”(where I live) and I’m getting peer-pressure, but I want to listen to my parents because they’d probably know the best advice.

@LonghornDan and pierrechn: Ok, so in the CAP thing it says that I must take a math course beyond college algebra during either spring or fall. So that means I need to take college algebra and another class but later in the year for sure, right? And it doesn’t have to be calculus, right?

@UTD does cap but i believe you need like a 1100 - 1300 if you in top 25, if your below they wont even let you in,

@phaser it just says beyond college algebra, i suggest you talk to the CAP counselor at UTSA/UTPA, so you can get a better understanding of what exactly you have to do to go to UT, but personally if you plan on trying to get like a 3.5 i think thats what u could get at another university and transfer with.

I would definitely talk to an adviser, don’t take our word as gospel. You may not have to take college algebra depending on how you score on a placement exam. But, I would talk to an official about that.

Choosing between UTSA and UTPA may be a tough decision, but if you are doing CAP, you will eventually be in Austin which I am assuming is farther than those other two schools. A little bit of distance is never bad, believe me, I love it. But, that is something for you and your parents to decide.

Just a side note, when I was looking into CAP last year, I saw that UTSA had the highest number of students do the CAP program and go to Austin. It was substantially higher too. Just some food for thought though.

what is college algebra? because i know i tested out of the placement tests at UTArlington, so does that mean i skip that class? if i decide to go

I have a question, I found out today, from this thread lol, that UTD is now an option for CAP, and I am eligible for it!! yay! So I was wondering, if you simply meet the minimum requirements for SAT score and Class rank, will that school automatically take you in for CAP? Or is it like you list that University as your first CAP preference, and they will go through all the people who listed UTD as their first CAP preference, and they just choose people to go there, meaning that others who still met the minimum requirement will not be offered admission for CAP? (So basically is it like automatic admission or will I have to be reviewed again?)
