MESSY DORM ROOMS on Oprah

This coming Thursday, March 12th, Oprah’s show will be (or maybe just include) about America’s messiest dorm rooms. My D has a friend thats she has known since 1st grade who along with her roommate submitted a tape of their room at Georgia Tech, and got chosen. I saw the submission tape on Youtube, and it was NASTY! I can only imagine her mother must be horrified because their house was always immaculate.

For those of you who’s S or D’s you may think have messy rooms, maybe if you watch this, your child’s wont seem quite so bad. :)

As it happens, my D is ALSO friends with one of the girls in that room–it’s possible you and I might know each other.

GAMOM, thanks for the heads up - I will watch. :)

LOL
But as someone who has stacks of things all over the place ( I have auditory memory, if all my papers made noise when I came close, then I would know where things were, as it is, I have to see them to remember)

I don’t really know what my daughters room in college looked like- her bed at home was like a nest, I am not sure where she slept

dg5052, I sent you a PM.

my boys are neat, but my dd seems like she’s from a different family! I’ve seen her dorm room “after” she’s cleaned it, cause we were coming, and I was still shocked!! At home, I insist that she keeps her door shut, cause I just can’t take it. I clean it (fumigate) etc, when she goes back to school…but, when she comes home, its like a hurricane hits within hours. She actually manages to sleep with, plates and glasses, books, papers, the cat…clothes…on and on…on her bed!! Thats not even saying what she has on the floor. Where did she come from???

As an aside, she’s one of those students who is a perfectionist. Cries if she gets anything but an A, lol…knows where every peice of paper she needs is…quite amazing, but such a slob. She’s very different from mom…who is a neat freak, but not quite as smart as she is:) I guess it takes all kinds to make this world go around.

papengena, I can relate. My youngest daughter’s room could likely qualify for this show! Her stuff is very disorganized, yet she is a top student and has been responsible to lead and direct many things, including on a professional level for pay. She manages to hold onto many reponsible positions and manages an extremely intense schedule in her college program. I don’t know how she does all these things when she can’t find anything in her room but she seems to do real well with things that really matter I guess.

I just found out she is moving unexpectedly at the end of the month from her apartment to another one in the city. We have moved her (and her sister) countless times. This will be the first time she does a major move on her own and I wonder how she’ll even pack the stuff up in order to move it. She is hiring help, however!

Oh dear Lord- let’s hope D’s room not on the show. With any of the luck we have had lately, roommate’s mother called the show and requested to have her DD and mine’s dorm room included because of my D. Our D is definitely not a neatnik-though school did not (IMO) do a good job of roommate matching from a neat vs. messy perspective. Roommate is absolutely neat-nothing out place-ever. D’s side of the room sounds like the GT room.

Reading posts on the this thread reminds me of the hysterical posts a year or so ago about “The Urban Mound Builders”-has anyone read those?

Don’t worry Georgiatwins, this room doesn’t have a square inch of cleanliness to it. I’m wondering if the show is having some kind of professional organizer come in to help or if it is just for show and tell.

Oprah could have filmed my SD’s apartment when she was at Tulane, pre-Katrina. Mold and mildew grew everywhere–the bathroom, all the filthy dishes in the kitchen, the fridge. Totally gross. When they moved out I wore bleachable clothing and bought Clorox to try to clean up some of the mess created by her, her roomates and nature.

My s is also friends with one of the 2 girls (and hi, dg!) (His room could give theirs a run for their money!!) Thanks for the heads up, GAMOM. I’ll have to watch for a clip on zulu, as I am never hhome in time to see Oprah :(

So, I just watched what I think is the clip on YouTube. I think my younger D could give them a run for the money. Cute clip though. Their acting skills could be better, LOL. The onesie PJ’s were cute. I’ll give my D credit though…she actually does go to class and she can never sleep in. :D

I can’t speak for other university students, but every wednesday, I have class from 930am to 5, with only an hour in between. Meaning, I have 3 classes back to back, an hour break, and another class. I don’t even get a lunch. And when I come home, sometimes I don’t even take my shoes off before collapsing in bed (these occasions usually follow an all night study session). Sometimes when I wake up the next morning, I haven’t even taken my coat off. And when you’re that tired, the last thing you want to think about is cleaning your room. :)

The only place that’s cleaned on anywhere near a regular basis is my kitchen, but only because I absolutely despise doing dishes.

^^Excuses, excuses, LOL! :D

I’ve got two D’s. One is in college (your college!) and one is in grad school. Both live in apartments. Both have to be up early and to school early. Both stay at school until very late at night…one probably gets home at midnight…the other even later (she just called me and is still at school and it is past midnight). So, they are BARELY ever home. However, D1’s apartment which I just visited is very very neat. D2’s own bedroom, which I recently saw, could be in a contest with the video I saw on YouTube. Both have crazy crazy intense schedules 24/7. But each is very different. And their bedrooms at home (which are as they left them) reflect one being in order and the other looking like a hurricane hit. Thankfully, the younger one is highly organized with things that matter. But when it comes to her belongings and personal space, it’s a mess, can’t find things, looses things like clothes, etc.

Hey, at least I clean the kitchen!!! :D

I used to lose homework on a regular basis in high school. Now I’m at university and I’m a lot better about it (well it does help that there’s less homework to hand in lol).

If you walked into my apartment, there would be dust bunnies flying around and you’d be welcomed by a pile of garbage bags because neither me nor my roommate could be bothered to take it down the hall and throw it down the chute.

WOW!! I loved seeing that dorm room on Youtube. Thanks for the post! My D’s room looks terrific compared to that one. At least they can see the floor in a couple of spots!

D just informed me that the show willl not be till next week, I am not sure if she said wed or thurs. I can only decipher ever four words from her as she has mono with bad swollen glands, etc. I will try to ge more accurate info tomorrow.

I’ve actually seen maggots. Don’t ask where.

^^^^^^^^^ OMG!!! I would flip out at that!
