<p>CGM: Not everyone in college has a car and the ability to make a trip to the grocery store on a moment’s notice.</p>
<p>If I were the university, I’d replace these maids as quickly as I could. It comes down to the fact that they’re refusing to do their jobs, so I’d relieve them of those duties, permanently. Until I could find replacements, I would make the resident director personally clean every room for suggesting that the help strike.</p>
<p>Vyse, the answer may not be for the maids to strike but the issue is not simply that the maids are not doing their job. The issue is that the boys on that floor (or some of them) are not being good citizens of the dorm and they should be held accountable to meet certain criteria or standards for the privilege of living there and if they can’t hold to certain standards as residents, then disciplinary action is appropriate. The maids have a job to do but so do the residents. They need to abide by certain housing rules that are within reason. Obviously their behaviors/actions were over the top which is why some remedy came up. The remedy may not have been the right remedy but one was surely needed.</p>

<p>I’m not a big fan of group punishment. Collectivism is a poor approach. If they can single out the person who defecated, they should definitely punish him. But in the mean time, the people who are being paid to clean up should clean up. I’m also not a big fan of the age bias in this thread. I cleaned the entire 3rd deck of a football stadium with a mere 14 other people on a saturday morning at 7 a.m. Because we were the last ones to accept the job, we were given the worst side of the arena: The alumni section (the young alumni in a separate section). The older alumni are the messiest people there. Every last one of them bought peanuts, and threw all the shells all over the stands and the grounds. The student section was 10x cleaner.</p>

<p>I always taught my kids uttmost respect for others, if one of mine did this, and I found out you can bet he/she would be the one cleaning it up if they wanted to play grown up away from home.</p>

<p>Walk, take a bus, ride a bicycle. I’m familiar with UMD and College Park. It’s perfectly possible to buy cleaning supplies on or near enough to campus to walk. In addition to that, there is public transportation that runs through campus, and the university runs its own bus system (the ShuttleUm, which is free to students) on and off campus.</p>

<p>I don’t like collective punishment either, but this instance almost calls for it. If these men are all living in a dorm and no one ever took the initiative to even complain to the cleaning department or just tell their hallmates “Hey, pick up your crap and have some common decency”, they’re just as bad as the ones doing the dirty deed (no pun intended), IMO.</p>
